Los Angeles Says Piracy 'Detrimental to the Public Health
blog.wired.com — Local governments in California and the United States have long had the power to declare property a public nuisance when their owners allow their land to become denizens of drugs, gangs, prostitution and gambling. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, following New York's lead, is adding a new category: music and video piracy.

If past articles on piracy are any indication, the firestorm from this ought to be very entertaining.- theanimalusa, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Totally looking forward to strathound's firestorm. No family should have their home torn away from them because a teenager downloaded their favorite song on Limewire. There is no justice here; it is fundamentally wrong and I question the LA Board members' qualifications and virtues. I hope an investigative reporter finds records of RIAA financial 'contributions' to the LA County Board of Supervisors, resulting in that "five-member board" being dismissed with prejudice.
(rant) I am absolutely no fan of the RIAA's practices and this only reinforces my convictions. If I had my druthers the organization would be forced to pay back all the individuals it has plundered and it's team of lawyers cast into the fiery pits of hell. It still amazes me that an organization can be allowed to snoop into a private citizen's personal computer, subpoena personal information from ISPs and financially ravage individuals, marking them with a court judgment for life. And to what end? Thousands (millions?) of people continue to use file sharing applications, swap MP3s, pass around CDs and DVDs, trade entire music libraries on flash cards, etc. You can't stop human behavior. I don't have a problem with shuttering large problem sites, but do have a major issue with screwing the individual music fan. (end rant)

- cjacks9, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4I wonder what burden of proof is required to truly show that you're pirating before they boot you out of your own home. Does this also mean that the vast majority of such 'evil people' live in New York and California? Will the sacrifices of these great many save the rest of us from such possibilities? And what happens if you rent rather than own?
- graderguy, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I believe the thought police come and ass rape your landlord. At least that's what I heard............
- stelriah, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2In other news, coffee shops in the LA area are dropping like flies and heavy.
- Reddog_x2000, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2This is why I'm a libertarian. If you give the government a power, they will find a way to abuse it. It doesn't matter how benign or legitimate that power may seem on it's surface. Some public official will find a way to torture the definition of a term to serve either his/her own agenda, or the agenda of someone who's paying him/her off. That's why government should be kept as small as possible.
