- dext3r, on 04/28/2008, -5/+37Twitter is stupid.
- Hangly, on 04/28/2008, -4/+33No one cares about twitter.
- Jimgress, on 04/28/2008, -4/+29Twitter is just another long line of internet social fads that'll die out to a diminished group of dedicated Luddites who'll pretend it was the best idea since sliced bread. Just like livejournal, xanga, myspace and also facebook. None of these will be around in a few years...they are the angelfires and geocities of the future.
That's just how the internet works. Create and move on to the next "great" idea. - prgmctan, on 04/28/2008, -7/+32AOL sucks
so I didn't read the article, sue me. - XiberKernel, on 04/28/2008, -1/+18Twitter is neat and all - but isn't it used mostly by tech-junkies living in/near silicon valley - who are generally unaware that it's a regional thing? I could be wrong, but I don't know a single person here in Michigan who uses it.
- Jimgress, on 04/28/2008, -2/+14Long before win, there was you.
- kurejibitch, on 04/28/2008, -0/+11Obligatory "AOL sucks", I had dial-up for more than a decade until I finally got high-speed in '07. ***** me. Anyways, point being that there is a big difference between the freakout when AOL apparently blacked out and when Twitter suffered what I would consider nothing more than usual ***** web server problems that happen once in a while and the site goes down temporarily. 5 million users to Twitter's....generally....retarded few comic artists and blog authors who actually use it?
I mean, really. Really? Twitter blackout was THAT big of a ***** deal? - dunezone, on 04/28/2008, -1/+12AOL might have sucked but it was the first major provider to offer a monthly fee over hourly.
- Owwmykneecap, on 04/28/2008, -3/+12yeah just like Amazon, ebay, MSN, and digg.
..oh wait... - zaldoe, on 04/28/2008, -0/+7and long before AOL there was ...
oh ***** this
http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2008/20080423.j ... applies to AOL too - isaactwito, on 04/28/2008, -1/+7Okay, this is getting redundant. I'm not going to waste any more time going to digg to read an article on cnet about how twitter is now like what aim used to be like and how people freaked out that they couldn't use their social networking media.
- helraizr, on 04/28/2008, -4/+8They forgot to mention that AOL sucks balls.
- arjung, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4just like youtube...
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4what about Prodigy?
I was using that first before AOL and it was monthly. - mono, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3Twitter:Tedious Bores::AOL:Lusers The good thing about both services: they keep their respective user bases in one place & easy to identify so you know just what it is you're dealing with.
- ogisdan, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3I remember AOL....god I hated dial-up.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 04/28/2008, -1/+4You're like the crazy guy on the sidewalk in the sandwich board who won't shut up. Don't ever change.
- emiles, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3Wow - your post is completely surreal...
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3Long before there was AOL, there was CompuServe.
- Asianwaste, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3AOL is for L@M0Rz. OMG I AM L33t H@X0RZ with PrOgGiEZ LiKe FATE and AOHell. I PUNTZ J00 and M@iLI30mB Jo0 LuRk3rZ!!!
- euro22, on 12/17/2008, -1/+3Dude you just said that.
- pault107, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2I was with you until you wrote Digg replaced Slashdot.
- WikiEasy, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2Hi, AOL is dead. Thank you very much.
- steveoco, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2Twitter just added an extra update to my day with no real reward... hence it is no longer part of my life and I urge others not to make it part of theirs.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1They where killed by the "Twitternator".... Most of them were named Sarah Conner, by the way.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I agree, that metaphor sucked. I prefer "Appliance like" quality.... I ask people, "How often do you think about your refrigerator?" when they say they don't I say, "That's what my product is like, it has Appliance like reliability....." Then I close the sale :)
- friarcrazy, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2Dial-tone quality, what a powerful metaphor. Oh, and I guess AOL Sucks.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2So good, he said it twice....
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2Hos?
- bob12321, on 04/28/2008, -2/+3Hos is this a Q&A?
- itsontheway, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2AOHELL, you mean?
- ghm101, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Interesting article, when you see the events described that way the similarity of reaction to the outages in both cases is striking.
- je12u, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1WOW...."fate"...don't forget requesting lists from bots to d/l WaRez...good times, good times.
- clpo13, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Twitter was done? Huh, I wouldn't have known. I use it to keep up with friends, but that's about it. I don't check it fifty times a minute like I do with my email. Not that I do that with my email...uh...dammit.
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I signed up for Twitter when I first heard about it and have never used it. Guess what? I was able to survive for these past 6-8 months without Twitter.
I have made a conscious effort to unplug more often of late and I have found myself much more relaxed and at peace.
More people should try this. - LoreleileeLong, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1What's Twitter?
And AOL sucks. - jmattiza40, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Great point on if your building value in the service for a possible monitization or service sale to investors, best keep the tribe happy because this is what is building value for the venture, learning from others mistakes on the, " they get the service for free so why should it matter or they should expect these issues" will bring down the value quicker than a snowball in....oops....
- lalindsey, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1ASL?
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1Twitter sucks, Facebook sucks, * sucks, IRC is best and always will be for communication. None of this giving your personal information to a site which will be used for advertising purposes, *****.
Smarten up. - sloppychris, on 04/28/2008, -2/+2Facebook will be around. If not, a similar social networking site will be. There's a lot of value there.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 04/28/2008, -2/+2You should read it. It brings into contrast the great AOL crash of 96 vs. the great Twitterless weekend of 08.
- polko, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0there was coffeetable!
- Jimgress, on 04/28/2008, -4/+4Yes, because twitter has absolutely everything in common with businesses like amazon, ebay and ***** microsoft. About the only thing they have in common is that, yes, these are all websites!
btw love the fact that you used digg as an example, when digg invariably replaced the likes of slashdot and fark. As if this is not the same fate as digg itself? - DesertDude, on 04/28/2008, -3/+3"...there was AOL"
...and a lot of vomit. - diggerphelps, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1I have never used twitter, nor any IM *****.
My time is too important to be constantly answering stupid queries the likes of "whut u doin'?" every ten seconds.
Not only that, I need any valuable FREE time I do have to waste on digg. - SteveIsTheDude, on 04/28/2008, -2/+1Nice cartoon... If you twit your BM's your a "Twitter *****"..... Nice.....
- countrygirl31, on 04/28/2008, -1/+0Yeah and before AOL was Compuserve..and before that was BBB with just a black screen Alt messages. before that was actually reading the newspaper, writting letters, and getting your gossip from magazines MY GOD!!!
- blankoboy, on 04/28/2008, -5/+4Twits do =)
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -2/+0now to be fair aol doesnt suck as much as its userbase :)
