- WiseWeasel, on 05/06/2008, -1/+175The suggested method is a bit elaborate. They say to put your sensitive files in an encrypted disk image, and then upload it to some web file host like Amazon S3. You should be fine storing the encrypted disk images locally on your laptop's hard drive, however, and you won't have to keep downloading it. They can't force you to turn over encryption passwords, so the encrypted content on your hard drive is off-limits to them. What a sorry state we're in when customs and other law enforcement officers have the right to search through your personal data without a warrant. This goes against every fiber this country was built with.

- buffalowolf, on 05/06/2008, -11/+82what do you mean wise weasle? aren't we assumed to be guilty until we are told otherwise? oh and if youre "innocent" you should have nothing to hide right, theres no such thing as privacy if we want to win this war on terror....
- ApokalypseNow, on 05/06/2008, -1/+61The method I have seen most suggested as an alternative is to remove your hard drive and FedEx it to your destination.
TSA douche: "We need to see what's on that laptop."
Me: "Sure, power it on up."
TSA douche: "It's saying it can't find an operating system!"
Me: "It sure can't! Hard to do without a drive in the machine." - rsmithrun, on 05/06/2008, -2/+59A program to open up a Rick Roll on login.
- mangamike, on 05/06/2008, -3/+59Me: *Waves hand* You don't need to see the contents of my laptop
Security: We don't need to see the contents of his laptop
Me: *Waves hand again* I can get on my plane now
Security: You can get on your plane now
Me: Move along
Security: Move along - dupswapdrop, on 05/06/2008, -4/+60I just tell them my laptop is loaded with the missing whitehouse emails and I am taking them out of the country to destroy them. Works every time.Oh and mr bush the dog ate my taxes sorry no check for you this year.
- glitch47, on 05/06/2008, -2/+56I just wanted to mention that TSA doesn't search laptops-- it's Customs that searches them, as you're not officially in the country until after you pass through customs, so the Fourth Amendment does not apply.
- Etchii, on 05/06/2008, -0/+46***** that. I'm going to purposefully put the most hardcore, obscene, distasteful and down right disgusting (yet legal) porn as my background. Want to see whats on my laptop? Sure..go right ahead!
- briguymaine, on 05/06/2008, -0/+45amen, I'm all for protecting the homeland but this is way over the line.
- sexybobo, on 05/06/2008, -0/+42If you have vista install DreamScene and have it play 2girls1cup as your background
- jkoski, on 05/06/2008, -2/+35Don't use Microsoft's encryption.
- jkoski, on 05/06/2008, -0/+32Not according to the courts. If you mean by holding a taser to my balls, then I guess I suppose they can.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 05/06/2008, -1/+32So how many people doubt these TSA employees (cough McDonald's equivalent) know anything about linux? I seriously doubt they will know what to do when I boot up my minimal XFCE X-Window manager and they ask to open a file browser, which in turn I open an xterm with a locked down account. Sorry no graphical browser point and click action here. Better yet, I wont even boot into x-windows.. all they get is command prompt.. :)
- FDL1, on 05/06/2008, -2/+33And then the TSA thinks it's a bomb because it won't turn on.
- BoneStamp, on 05/06/2008, -1/+30Keep all your files on a 30 gig iPod, they'll never look there.
- BoneStamp, on 05/06/2008, -0/+28One time going into Canada I didn't declare a piece of cake that came with my lunch (that I obviously didn't finish but brought with me). They searched all my bags and my laptop. They said I had to provide access to my laptop or it would be confiscated. Basically, all the agent did was open windows explorer and perform a *.jpg *.gif file search on my C:. "What kind of photos am I going to find on here" she asked. I was hesitant to answer, but I was pretty sure Distrust (FireFox extension) had me covered. Thank god... or at least thank Distrust. I got to keep the cake and they didn't charge me duty on it... WTF?
- mrsteveman1, on 05/06/2008, -0/+27Thats the real issue here, the idiots in the FBI and every other agency seem to care more about porn than actual threats.
- cam0man, on 05/06/2008, -1/+27just throw everything you have on a giant thumb drive w/ a bootable version of your favorite OS. When TSA boots your lappy and finds a normal version of Windows 3.1 installed they won't have any questions, then just board the flight and boot up your two girls 1 cup themed version of your favorite OS.
this whole concept is retarded, TSA is not made of the nation's elite. I'm sick of explaining every basic peice of electronics I travel with to the space cases w/ guns. Installing your favorite virtualization software w/ a VM on an encrypted thumbdrive is more than enough, or just carrying a spare 5gb hard drive w/ a clean OS and having your 120gb 'filthy' drive that can be swapped in is another solution. These people aren't CSI agents, the only thing they're going to catch with this is Joe Blo porn addict or the loser w/ too much porn related spyware. Give me a break, anyone with something to hide is already probably infinitely smarter than any TSA employee.
Give me a break /stossell - aigulf, on 05/06/2008, -0/+26Hmm....I wonder if putting the seal of the DoD up as your background would be enough. :-p
- m0tbaillie, on 05/06/2008, -0/+25They refuse to let you on your flight, most likely.
- RomeyRome, on 05/06/2008, -2/+27Play this on your wallpaper:
http://www.thecleverest.com/countdown.swf - Cam_86, on 05/06/2008, -0/+24Encrypt.
Change the file type(.dll) and put in obscure windows folder.
Uninstall all traces of the encryption software,
When you get to your location, re-download and re-install encryption software.
Un-encrypt data
The fact that we have to do this at all says a lot about the current state of the world. All they are going to catch are a few stupid pedophiles. No one with any technology intelligence is dumb enough to try to smuggle illegal info through the TSA, and espionage is going to be done through a spy's embassy. The net result is a few idiots who were bound to get caught sooner or later get caught earlier, and EVERYONE ELSE loses more of their civil rights. - BoneStamp, on 05/06/2008, -0/+23The second time I had my laptop searched at the border I did have files on there from the department of defense because I was doing some work for them. Once the agent saw that they stopped searching my computer and let me go with no further questions.
- Hosalabad, on 05/06/2008, -0/+22You forgot to wave your hand the third time. Now they are going to wake up and cockpunch you.
- dweeb79, on 05/06/2008, -0/+22If you have something you NEED to keep secure; all you need is love, hope and this.........
http://www.truecrypt.org/ - atezun, on 05/06/2008, -0/+22It's looking more like the fatherland these days.
- doctechnical, on 05/06/2008, -1/+22Better: After shipping the real drive, drop some old POS drive in there with a broken copy of Windows (is that redundant?) and when it gives some obscure message on bootup start screaming about how their X-Ray machine ruined your hard drive.
- BoneStamp, on 05/06/2008, -0/+21They will now.
- crazyjake, on 05/06/2008, -0/+21how exactly does a laptop with porn on it crash a plane?
- chadgauth, on 05/06/2008, -2/+22"Any society that would give up a little freedom to gain a little security will lose both and deserve neither" - Benjamin Franklin (He was a very smart person)
- orxor, on 05/06/2008, -0/+20Thanks for the info I'll make sure to have only the goatse.cx jpg on my laptop. Besides I doubt if I just boot my linux box to the command line they'll know what to do.
- melanarchy, on 05/06/2008, -2/+21It's not the TSA you have to worry about. It's Customs on your way back in. Buried for misleading.
- BoneStamp, on 05/06/2008, -0/+18Ya, she said she was looking for kiddie porn. Still retarded... I can imagine there are easier ways to get kiddie porn into Canada than taking a laptop on a plane.
- mandarin, on 05/06/2008, -0/+18Share it with the pilot
- aetherboy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+18So...theoretically...lets say I'm traveling with my laptop and I have a huge folder full of movies/tv shows/music I pulled off of Bittorrent...can they do anything about it? Are they going to do anything about it? This is all purely theoretical of course as I do not pirate media at all.
- alpinecow, on 05/06/2008, -0/+17buried as inaccurate...customs has the right to view the contents of a laptop, not the TSA--and their authority to do so is nothing new. see the original article on CNET: http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9935170-7.html
- Dou6, on 05/06/2008, -1/+18Hey, Quick Question
WHAT THE ***** HAPPENED TO MY COUNTRY!? - clickwir, on 05/06/2008, -0/+16ROFLs.... you could have used free software for this. You got had.
- sexybobo, on 05/06/2008, -2/+18If you have vista install DreamScene and have it play 2girls1cup as your background
- dpcamp, on 05/06/2008, -1/+17with all the steps and precautions they give you, it makes it sound like it will take hours to get through security if they did that! lets hear it for showing up to the airport at 5am to catch your 3pm flight!
- BoneStamp, on 05/06/2008, -0/+16Yup, like the macbook air with the SSD drive... they didn't believe that was a computer because it had no platter drive.
- priegog, on 05/06/2008, -0/+15Yeah I had no idea. I'll make sure to have goatse as my WALLPAPER tho.
- deshman, on 05/06/2008, -1/+16privacy concerns? I wonder what would happen if you just refused to let them access your computer?
- rebelcommander, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14They can have my computer. We're assuming that these apes who fail to detect loaded guns being taken through the checkpoint have the brains to even wipe a Windows login password.
- bensone1, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14it's ***** like this that keeps on escalating that makes the dept of homeland security a joke. the tsa is one big failure and should just hire out a circus full of clowns.. oh wait, too late... and i have to fly to d.c. in a couple of weeks and i am regretting it all ready
- bensone1, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14i just had an idea... have the rick roll'd video ready to go so when the turn my baby on tsa gets rick roll'd! epic...
and remember these are the fools that didnt think the macbook air was a computer -
