- CLShortFuse, on 11/07/2007, -12/+164Competition only drives better products. This won't make the iPhone outdated, this will drive Apple to only make their software better. (So hold your tongue trolls)
I believe, (my opinion) if anybody can compete with Apple in terms of UI and ease of use, it would be Google. - Nantel, on 11/06/2007, -5/+10022 minutes into the presentation and I still have no clue what this means to me as a comsumer.
- MDKAOD, on 11/06/2007, -2/+86So basically, we're talking about an announcement about the formation of a group that will be making an announcement at some unannounced point in the future about products that are to be announced...is this about right?
- kargur, on 11/06/2007, -13/+89I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords.
- winnch, on 11/06/2007, -12/+62Google? UI design? Surely you must be joking. This is, after all, the company that for a year make "Delete Email" a menu item.
- rubberfactory, on 11/07/2007, -1/+47Up goes Google stock... again!
- digggggggggg, on 11/06/2007, -3/+48Right, Microsoft already does all this, and we have to PAY THEM HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS to do it.
- PIPBoy2000, on 11/06/2007, -5/+48whatever, microsoft already does this
id rather bunk with google - RadicalEdward, on 11/06/2007, -4/+40"We strongly believe and hear the vision of the Alliance." - Can you say, google world domination?
I for one welcome our all-knowing google overloards. - digggggggggg, on 11/06/2007, -4/+29Remember that time we thought Google was going to make an awesome thin-client PC-killer product, but turned out releasing a pay-for-content section of "Google Video" instead?
This is feeling more and more like that. - rudy23, on 11/06/2007, -10/+33UI design is what really made google. its simple and gets the job done. building somethign simple which works is not as easy as it seems.
- nekochan, on 11/06/2007, -1/+23""Can carriers prevent users from adding in software / services they left out?" "That's not really a [Google] software question.""
aannd... they've lost us. - MalDON, on 11/06/2007, -3/+24Jesus, someone has to type fast.
- monkeyrun, on 11/06/2007, -5/+25holy crap, they literally just announced the GPhone.
no details no nothing ....
it basically goes like this
Google: Gphone...
some company : Gphone...
HTC: GPhone ......
some company : Gphone...
Moto: GPhone ......
Google: Gphone ......
All together: Cheers!!! - deadnoob, on 11/06/2007, -0/+19no, we expected another company to make a google branded phone.
- echo1, on 11/06/2007, -3/+21"Imagine not just one Gphone, but a thousand Gphones as a result of the partnerships... "
so what theyre really saying is that we'll have to use this on ***** handsets developed by the same companies that have been making ***** handsets for years - dirtyfrog, on 11/06/2007, -3/+21Only if you let them be all of those things.
- mr1337, on 11/06/2007, -0/+18I think myself and many others are getting F5 syndrome. :-/
- xYike, on 11/06/2007, -4/+21They were not the first search engine if I rememer correctly and they seem to be eeking by.
- nekochan, on 11/06/2007, -1/+16yes. is that a phone that kid's holding, or a block of cheese?
- rudy23, on 11/06/2007, -5/+20they sure as hell arent using an iPhone
- digggggggggg, on 11/06/2007, -0/+15The company that has the most to worry about is probably Microsoft. They've been complacently selling that barely-usable Windows Mobile for way too long. It's about time for someone to make a platform that competes directly with WM. Might as well be Google.
- antiver, on 11/06/2007, -0/+14More importantly, all that has been officially announced now!
- epohs, on 11/06/2007, -1/+14Yes. But, the details of the OS probably aren't exactly going to be the revolutionary part.
What's going to end up changing the industry is the fact that the OS is open, and that Google will be able to put behind that OS a sizable coalition of influential companies. - chriskzoo, on 11/06/2007, -7/+20I fail to see the "revolution" in this. So Google is essentially building a Google OS for cell phones?
- Psythik, on 11/05/2007, -5/+18So far I'm disappointed...
- kwick, on 11/07/2007, -0/+13Here is the site related to Android. SDK will be released on Nov. 12th
http://www.android.com/index.html - Aleman360, on 11/06/2007, -6/+18"...handsets will be available in the second half of 2008."
Yawn. - rebotfc, on 11/06/2007, -1/+13Colour me unimpressed, really don't think this will work not due to Google's ingenuity, but instead because all the manufacturers will ***** the idea up and ultimately abandon the platform as they can't work together.
- digggggggggg, on 11/06/2007, -0/+12Apple sells products while Google sells less tangible, but no less useful, services.
Did you guys really expect Google to make a phone to sell directly to consumers? - defectDS, on 11/06/2007, -3/+13And people who type "schmucks"...?
- digggggggggg, on 11/06/2007, -1/+11Right, it's like that club in High School where the only purpose of meetings was to talk about how great the club was. The members then walk out with more resume padding.
Oh wait, that was pretty much all clubs. - outsidethebox, on 11/06/2007, -4/+13What the hell is it? This has provided us with no real info on what we can truly expect. At the end of the day, who care that the big-wigs at Moto and HTC think about some mysterious open-source platform coming months and months from now. We want to see what this mean for us as a consumer.
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -3/+12And Apple still doesn't have "Delete All" option in the iPhone.
- TiKoZ, on 11/05/2007, -1/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=GPhone&d ... < from the comments, god i love wikipedia =D
- FuzzyBunny, on 11/06/2007, -2/+11To me, this quote completely deflates any excitement I had for this platform:
"'Q: So if the industry wants to create totally locked down devices, they CAN do it?' Rubin: 'Yes.'"
So long as the carriers maintain the ability to pick and choose which apps and features can go into their phones and which can't, it is completely irrelevant to the end user what the OS is. The operating systems are not what's holding back this industry, it's the proprietary, locked down nature that the carriers forcefully impose on every company involved. So long as things remain that way, all of this talk about openness and innovation is just smoke and mirrors. - rebotfc, on 11/06/2007, -1/+9The real competitor to this is Windows Mobile anyway, not the iphone.
- MacParrot, on 11/06/2007, -0/+8mmmMMMMM...cheesephone
- t1m0j5, on 11/06/2007, -4/+12so far CEO's just introducing themselves.....
- canthraxp, on 11/06/2007, -0/+8Fill with an X if present:
[ ] funny?
[ ] made a satirical relation with other product (microsoft's, apple's, etc)?
[ ] "the cake is a lie"?
[ ] Relation with Ron Paul / Ubuntu / iPhone / Leopard / Steve Jobs / arsTechnica / gPhone?
[ ] "something ??? profit"?
Failed to pass the DIGG comment validator. - CLShortFuse, on 11/06/2007, -1/+7Apple related comment:
9:38AM PT - Q: "Eric is on the board of Apple -- why did you do your own solution when on the board of Apple at the same time? Also, can I have the specs of a mobile phone that uses Android? Does it need a huge screen? A keyboard? What kind of device will be used?"
9:39AM PT - Eric: "It's true I'm on the board of Apple; I'm a very happy iPhone user. It's important to say that there will be many, many mobile experiences, and Android will be used on many other kinds of devices..." Rubin: "The second part: minimum reqs is about a 200MHz ARM9, software is compatible with small screens, large screens, QWERTY, non-QWERTY..." so apparently it's hardware flexible (dur).
Rubin on OS X: "As an open platform we're available for anyone to use, this isn't just one company's product."Rubin on OS X: "As an open platform we're available for anyone to use, this isn't just one company's product."
The guy is part of Apple's board...iPhone + GoogleOS is now a stronger possibility (though still unlikely) - d1a1s1, on 11/06/2007, -1/+7There IS a pic on that page!
- Rockarollr, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6All the waiting and hype...for this?!?
Google: "We're going to come out with something awesome...in 2008...just you wait!" - akkibaba, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6What we really need are screenshots of the UI.
- nekochan, on 11/06/2007, -1/+6""Please refer to the Apache software license... when you free something, it's up to the industry to do something with it." "So if the industry wants to create totally locked down devices, they CAN do it?" "Yes.""
- monkeyrun, on 11/06/2007, -1/+6Yes that sums everything up perfectly.
- bigdoof, on 11/06/2007, -7/+12The difference is that Microsoft offers tools to help you make those files, but you never really store data with them. If Google has its way, your entire digital life will be stored on their servers where it can be datamined for whatever purpose they want. I love their services, but their potential scares me a little more than Microsoft.
- nekochan, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5i think android on iphone will be closer to ipodlinux than something official.
- NewGTGuy, on 11/06/2007, -1/+6Hell, I was high on peyote when I told you that!
- Afronautica, on 11/06/2007, -18/+23I love Google as much as the next guy, but is anyone else concerned that if Google has their way, they will be your:
word processor, spreadsheet, email application, search engine, social network, mapping software, cell phone OS, etc...
I mean, my head is just spinning with the privacy implications! -
