- LogicallyGenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It will be fun when normal torrent data will be downloaded in sequence and while it downloads we can watch it with VLC player. Cant wait for this development.
I know mongers will repeating the crap that torrents dont download in sequence. Just cut the crap, when your client picks up pieces from someone all we have to do is pick them in sequence. We can give a buffer of say pick the last 4 or 10 incomplete chunks/pieces to speed up the download. - kevin.gc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The English version, courtesy of the "English" link:
http://www5.pplive.com/english/ - d3athcarb4fatty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are slow channels and flawless channels, anyone know of channel listings that tell more about what each is broadcasting?
Oh and within the first 5 minutes of using it Norton found like 5 new viruses, and I never have viruses soo maybe this thing could be downloading more than just tv. I don't really care since this isn't my computer, hehe. - mu-sly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cosmotic: But there's no reason a BitTorrent-like protocol (or even modified version of BitTorrent itself) couldn't be used on smaller chunks of a file. So for example if each minute of a broadcast was distributed using BitTorrent, allowing for a 2 minute delay or so, so that the seed would only have to send out the various parts of the broadcast to various nodes, who would then exchange parts with each other and build up the full broadcast - like regular bittorrent, but on a much shorter timescale. There's absolutely no reason at all why that couldn't be done to provide distributed networking in almost realtime (with a minute or so buffer), in fact, if someone isn't already doing this, I have a good mind to do it myself at some point.
- Raul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is been going on since beginning of this year. These programs started mainly for streaming soccer games. If anyone wants to watch soccer over the weekend check this link
http://www.fbtz.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=18 - Addp009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you click on English, and download the PPLive program, you would be able to find view the feeds in the Program List. But i don't think anything is a english feed right now
- liquidice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This seems cool, but I can't navigate. But i'll digg it nonetheless because it's a great idea.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whos streams are we watching? digg++
- Addp009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just found more site using similar technology:
http://www.sopcast.org/ - modeps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, just what I thought... that Sopcast isnt using Bittorrent.
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I downloaded it and it's pretty neat. Have to click "Swich Languge" (LOL) in the systray icon menu and then it's in Engrish. Lots of channels available! The few I tried came in with English sound but with Chinese (or other asian scribbling) subtitles. But the video was really bad. Colors washed out, and I can't find any way in WMP to change or adjust that.
- modeps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That really doesn't make sense considering that you dont download chunks of the file in order with bt.
- reni10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just tried the SopCast player and it is really quiet good!
BBC World News is about 2 minutes behind the actual broadcast from my cable TV service, this technology could great in the future...
This is a big time DIGG from me!!! - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BLAM: http://participatoryculture.org/download.php
- zone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome! tho I'm not getting good speed.. digg +1!
- frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@mu-sly
I've often wondered why no one has done what you are describing, but I haven't gotten around to coding anything as of yet.
If there isn't any good immediate reason why it wouldn't work, I would be interested in talking this idea over you and/or with other people who are interested and starting an open source project around the idea. - hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesn't skype work off of a similar principal as this? I read somewhere that little slices of your phone call get distributed among other skype users and that the programmer is the same guy who developed kazaa and that skype uses similar technology as kazaa (distributed peer to peer), seems logical to me that video should be transmittable in a similar fashion (it's all just data, 1's and 0's anyway)
- hucgreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Streaming ESPN from eroupe. I'm cancelling my cable right now. Some of the channels seem to be off the air but that maybe because of the differents in time zones. It like 2:00am there now right. So, now I don't have to dig that hole to china. Bittorrnet did it for me.

wow great link (no) - hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0any spyware/trojans in this?? I'm not installing this on my pc at work...
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did finally find the video settings (gah I hate Windows!) but I guess its just the nature of the codec they're using. Tried both PPLive and Sopcast, and even lowering Saturation down and adjusting contrast didn't help much. But the framerate and sound are acceptable, but video isn't always in sync. I'd love to see how this develops.
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been watching soccer with this software for a few weeks. It is my new favorite thing ever.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys must be ignorant of bit torrent technology. It is by definition impossible to stream live data via bit torrent. If the content is continuously changing, then the .torrent files must continually change, which means that the second you connect to download the torrent, there will be a new torrent. And the data from the torrent you are downloading would not be live since it already happened.
- hucgreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is great, HBO is english, and super girl is great. I can wait to see what HotTV is. Thanks
- kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The thing about bittorrent is that files are never downloaded sequentially (unless there's only one seeder and one leecher I think.) So how could you broadcast live tv if none of the packets are downloaded in order? You can't even stream non-live video or audio for this reason.
So, is this really bittorrent, or just something similar to bittorrent? - ChicagoFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about a Translated page ? I do not Do Jap or Chinease
- mrblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting, i should note that the BBC are due to start a extensive trail next month using DRMed stuff and p2p for UK people.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/imp/ - modeps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mu-sly:
First of all, nowhere do they mention Bittorrent at all in their documentation (sopcast because it's in English). You know some geek would want to brag that they found yet another legit use for BT. Secondly, it's definatley not BT, it's just a P2P network. Finally, doing the method you described would be ludacrisly over-complicated.
This is NOT Bittorrent.
Smart use of P2P technology, yes... but the op should realize that P2P != BT and he's false advertising. - peto650, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you only like stupid corporate propaganda then DTV is probably not for you. I am finding lots of great feeds on DTV. Like: Luxomedia, Democracy Now!, Diggnation, System, CommandN, Grassroots Channel, Fifth Annual Media That Matters Film Festival... the list goes on. You just can't get this kind of exciting, original, personal and informative stuff on regular broadcast tv.
- lextool2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, sopcast works!! I love it, BBC, ESPN, star sports.. pplive doesn't work. I think you should recommend sopcast.
- godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0interesting, but it uses up all my upload bandwidth which slows down everything else.
- metalrock76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool. some channels are really good quality, and english.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Impressive, bad I don't know chinese, btw what are they talking mandrin or cantonese?, my wild guess is mandarin.
- frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found a couple open source p2p audio streaming projects when I searched
- blonco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hello everyone
I love all the magic that is going on with thie bit torent etc
Please tell me how can I be a person that can provide this to my website so that people who join can have the advantage of being able to produce live content-TV shows etc.
I like sop cast etc but how can I get a scripte or a license to use this technology and remove the branding and be my own entity if this is possible or is this technology so new that only a few people will be in control
could you reply to me @
musicfilmindustry@yahoo.com - andrew.bell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I get "Windows Media Player unable to connect to the server" I see that the PPLive buffer is at 100%, what gives?
- Jules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet, this program rocks!
- ((PolyAst)), on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I lineout my monitor thru my vcr to watch tv shows I download. I'm always looking for content like this.
Thanks! +digg :) - dvdavid888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well it works! The program did not use a lot of PC performance and i got to watch HBO and if u run in to {Windows Media Player unable to connect to the server} try out K-Lite Mega Codec Pack i don't no y but after installing it and set it for all formats i Had no more problems with PPlive. http://www.codecguide.com/download_mega_old.htm
- jimbo92107, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SopCast appears to have a subset of the programs available on PPLive. SopCast's interface is simpler to use, but PPLive's list of programs is much, much larger.
Should be interesting to see what other English channels are available. I'd love to see some NFL games on my computer, since I don't have a TV... - spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What kind of name is PPLive?
- Anbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Revision3 should DEFINATELY use this if they can.
- cessax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is already happening in the US: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A//participatoryculture.org/download.php&ei=iU8WQ9ThBp_0-AHpruT3DQ
- Limin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Guys and gals, I would be careful downloading this program. There is a lot of bugs that potentially ruin your audio, and speed performance. How do I know this? Well, I download this program about 2 months ago, and after a few days, I started to seen problems. My PC will crash every time I copy and paste an file, not only that, I use Adobe Audition for recording, somehow that program crashed as well. Furthermore, you'll see a significant loss in speed. I am talking when loading programs. Basically, I am telling everyone this, "Use this program at your own risk."
- sgtstadanko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dude...thats gross! PPLive...what is it an all watersports/urine fetish tv?
- GirSaysDoom13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0any mac support? (not on DTV, because that deosn't have live feeds, or even shows on tv, only things people on the internet have made, and it is all bad. Except rocketboom.)
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0very cool
