- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More conservative ***** (Schadenfreude) about the liberal *****(Live8). It's all ***** to me. I'm so sick of these idiots on BOTH sides and the fanboys that support them.
And the guy on Schadenfreude really needs a new hobby. It wouldn't be bad if it were a little funny, but it's just weak. - ChrisHackett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish there was a negative digg for stories like these. Not one person has posted about the G8, nor has the incensative ***** basted that wrote that artical. If it was in your country there would be outrage that so meny people were dieing of curable infections/problems
- musicbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Before something is dug, we should perhaps - actually read - the post that is linked to. It's obvious a knee jerk conservative rant. Rant's are not news - particularly not this politically biased. If you don't have much interest in the artists involved, that's fine, but that doesn't dismiss the need for timely discussion of what bloatedly wealthy countries like America can do to end this absurb and obscene situation in the African nations. The "debate" about this topic should be not about why you don't like Bono, but what it is YOU are planning to do in support of helping to find a solution. We are surely in a time where third world poverty, disease, starvation and military dictatorships just no longer have a place. It's time to find a way to tramp the dirt down on these dead old ideas once and for all...and if it means giving Bush and Co. a boot up the ass to bring America kicking and screaming into at least the 20th century when it comes to health care and poverty... well so much the better.
- johncarey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very Good Article!
- mikeman8905, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its not a fraud its just a different name
it would be like saying the xbox 360 is a fraud because they didn't call it xbox 2 - tribalsun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That commentary rocks!
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The voice of one person won't do anything....One united voice of millions will!....best idea yet...for give those countries debts for which they have no healthcare, education or food and Aids Medicines so they have help their own people...and not just from 1 country but from all of the wealthiest ones...it's a good step in the fight against all of these things and more.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I've been to Africa and here are some facts IMHO.
People have food and their are NOT in starvation as many think, the amount of people dying of hunger is the same you could find in the American continent.
People care about malaria or any other "tropical" disease than aids, you can barely find condoms at the pharmacies.
The weapons they use for their wars are either French, American or Russian, never saw an African made weapon.
Corruption is everywhere, you find people driving Mercedes Benz and BMWs and two houses down the block kids playing without shoes.
An last but not least, why condoning the debts to the Africans?, Latin America and Asian countries can't be left behind, unless you support starving Peruvian o Brazilian kids to save any kid in Africa.
This Live 8 thing is Bull ***** big time, hope those who support it to go straight to hell.
PENN AND TELLER YOU CAN TAKE IT FROM HERE. - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No. New ideas are good when the intentions behind those ideas are good. The clowns behind Live 8 already showed their lack of good will with what happened after Live Aid to the innumerable oppressed Africans killed due to their aid to the warlords.
- Badtouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyway this article is better than those "falling all over myself to guilt you into caring" articles
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's not the point. I supported Live Aid wholeheartedly. I even donated. But after it came out that Geldof and company didn't oversee how the money was used, and the multiple atrocities committed attributed to the Live Aid funds, I lost all trust and respect for Geldof and company.
- whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.worldmag.com/subscriber/displayArticle.cfm?ID=10764 - another good link from the comments of the article.
- Badtouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ain't nobody gonna' use my voice for that.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One.org and Live 8 are one and the same.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think the XBox has ever killed anyone through the negligence of Microsoft, has it?
- Futurama56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Paris rocked! Muse was godly.
- socket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Live 8 is not only a fraud it's just another example of how celebrities make things worse by opening their big fat self-righteous mouths. So does this mockery still only have ONE African artist on the bill?
Get real and stop eating the ***** they feed you followers to make you feel better about yourselves as the artist get their names shamelessly plastered around the world as "humanitarians". It makes me sick and should also make any who really gives a ***** about these people. - salweem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very true.
- cal0001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0first of all Bono would kick your ass and if he did not i would
second "6. This whole event has spawned the term “extreme starvation. Extreme starvation? ALL STARVATION IS EXTREME – THAT’S WHY ITS CALLED STARVATION! What these bigots mean by “Extreme Starvation is African starvation. Asians staring in North Korea need not apply. Kids in the nether regions of the Russia can kiss Bono’s wrinkly butt. Nice. Perhaps we can rename some the African leaders as “Extreme dictators and the Muslim slave trade as “Extreme slavery. Maybe we can get all of those patchouli scented college kids to pay attention to those issues then."
in response to this i say ***** you then i say uoy are from the us and there for your country profited off african slaves for over 100 years mabby helping them and cuting their debt and helping them get on their feet is not that bad an idea.
thirs ***** you
forth you name3 the time and the place and Bono and me will go you, bring it on
fith your an idiot - deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Live 8 is not only a fraud it's just another example of how celebrities make things worse" to that I say BS!
At the very least, it creates some type of awareness of what is going on in that region.
How many people are dying of aids in Africa daily?
How many people have been killed or being killed in Africa due to ethic BS?
How many people are dying of starvation daily?
You might say, "Who cares?"
The only difference between you and them (the impoverished Africans) is that your soul (upon your birth) was attached to a body in a region other than in Africa. Thus, you are living a decent life. You are not feeling the pain of an empty bloated stomach (due to not eating with in days).
I'm sick and tired of this BS ...
I'm American. She's French. He's African. Or,
We're white. He's black.
That is all mental *****. We are all, first, humans and citizens of this planet called Earth. And so, we should help and care for each other.
Instead, we divide and kill ourselves based on borders, race, and other *****.
Let us open our minds and make our world better.
I bet you subscribe to the current running jokes of the day ...
"To give you freedom, we must take away your freedom." or,
"Heeeeeere's democracy! We had no choice in having killed your brother, sister, cousin, aunts and uncles. So how does it feel to have democracy?"
It's time to wake up. - pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For only the price of a cuo of coffee....
- WeetaBiX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the concert...did you like the concert? Dido looked and sounded good...Duran Duran sucked...
- smoochypoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You 2 are SO married! ...and give your money to the the institutions that help the homeless get out of being homeless, schools, and health/research facilities in your own country first! If you give it to those people who say they are trying to help reduce starvation and poverty, they will waste your well meaning money. The militias in Africa will steal/burn/kill everything that would be donated - again. If the money goes to the governments - oh God, they will pocket most of it (as they are very corrupt), and build and itty bitty wooden hut they would call a school, then it will be burned down and everyone massacred.
Help your country FIRST! Let the rock stars donate at least a million each if they even care. They can afford it. - l0ki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So does this mockery still only have ONE African artist on the bill?"
Dave Matthews is from South Africa, so technically yes. - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never had a cuo of coffee. What country is that from?
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yup. Hopefully Geldof can change his track record.
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*cup. But really the sad thing is that in a week maybe less, most people will forget about this event. Those who don't will either try and continue to help or continue to profit. Conservative or liberal, Ford or Chevy.....my dick is bigger than yours its all the same *****. I'm out.
- rawr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is one crazy man.
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0live 8 is a joke. i mean if it is all great and grand to relieve people of debt now, then hey how about just relieving everyone of debt and then I won't have to worry about my student loans that make it where i have to live off of next to no food and barely am able to pay my rent. technically i could get aid from the govt but i am not a leech and i believe in working for my damn money.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess you can always hope.
- b00tL3GG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we should send them a crap-load of birth control pills, condoms, horticulture/Ag professors, various fruit/vegetable seeds, and male/female pigs/cows. Make it illegal to have kids for the next 20 years in Africa. Teach them to grow/butcher their own food. By then they might be self supportive enough to feed themselves at least. If that doesn't work, we should just nuke 'em to put them out of their misery.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0A pig called by any other name is still a pig.
- dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"On the official website for Live 8, they are careful to explain that this is not Live Aid II. The reason these goofballs have to make this distinction is because the original Live Aid was a disaster that directly and indirectly caused pain and suffering on those it claimed to help.`
They are careful to explain this distinction, because this time they are not asking for cash donations. They are asking for ONE voice. - Badtouch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Plumpy'nut
- whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I stopped reading at "Remove marxist regimes"
I didn't support Live 8 either because i found it was a self-rightous guilt trip, but this fascist is just justify why he should keep his money so he can sit on his ass and spew ***** like "liberals like dick" or
"When we fight the Chinese we will find that they will have plenty of supporters between our shores. That is why I believe that we should institute measures to acknowledge these losers before it is too late. Liberals are not on our side. They have proven this to be the case since the Russian Revolution and will continue to side against us in the future."
what a ***** - dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0WackyT, why are you on this thing 24/7, and why the hell is this post not on the main page with +61 Diggs.
- dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i agree, its good not to be too biased. i support this post.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So, are you trying to censor a digg that you dugg?
- dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hopefully.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This makes the 50th comment, and I'm outta here.
- dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0From WackyT's Point of view, the celebrities can actually hurting the problem. It's the government that can make a difference. I support WackyT. . Whoever he is....
- dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It's not over, Lets wait to see the many new lives we save.
- dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"How many rich people do you know who donate any decent amount of money?
Survive on ÂŁ30? What? After he pays his bills? That is struggling. That's just life. Anyone that would complain about that doesn't deserve it in the first place. At least not when 1 billion people are trying to live on $1....... A week...
Wow... I learned something from MTV? UGH"
.... Looks like MTV is doing something too. - dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0but... the celebrities are the only way we can raise awareness..
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050703/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_africa
You see, the problem with getting rid of military dictatorships is that military interdiction has to take place. As history shows, liberals will support a military dictatorship over a democracy.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/050623/23euroleft.htm
Now, please post a liberal solution to getting rid of military dictatorships. - dbspin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm no expert on the success or otherwise of the previous Live Aid campaign [and I doubt this blogger is either, as he provides -count em- 0 links or statistics to back up his assertions], however..Much of what this he has posted must be taken under considerable advisement.
Notable quotes..
"The only way to end starvation in Africa is to end dictatorships and/or Marxism in Africa."
Real redistributive Marxism would, almost by definition, provide an equal distribution of resources, thereby ending starvation. Of course there exist African regimes which are Marxist in name alone, but calling them Marxist, is like labeling Iran democratic because they have elections.
"At least this time they won’t be sending over tons of grain and depressing the African agricultural industry like before."
Aha, the voice of neoliberalism speaks. No doubt he believes market forces act not just to create wealth, but somehow magically to provide societies needs, just as they do in the US - the Western nation with the greatest (and fastest increasing) disparity between rich and poor; and one of the few western nations where medical care is not considered a human right..
Additionally, the free trade without restriction argument would posit that arms sales to Africa, responsible for an enormous degree of suffering (for example, land mine casualties and amputees), and the actions of Western corporations in South America, who build private armies and intentionally destabalise elected governments with redistributative tendencies, should be lauded.
"The organizers speak of Africa as if it were one large country instead of a continent."
Clearly the author hasn't been reading any of the Live8 material, or watching any of the Geldoff interviews. Geldoff has been campaigning for a tiered approach, initially trying to attain debt relief for the countries in greatest need; and engaging in constructive discussion on a case by case basis about how best avoid the misuse aid provided to countries with dictatorial regimes.
"Africa includes Liberia, Sudan and Somalia. Are they worthy of our charity?"
Clearly Sudan and Somalia are. Both nations have in recent years experienced civil wars which have lead to famine and enormous social deprivation.
"How about the removal of dictators and/or Marxist regimes?"
I'm not a Marxist, however I feel I should point out that Marxism is primarily an economic system, like capitalism, not a political system, like democracy or oligarchy. Thus a Marxist democracy is perfectly possible.
Additionally, how does the author suggest such dictators be removed? By invasion, which has been oh so successful for the US in Vietnam and now Iraq? Such an invasion would of necessity be unilateral, as most European nations have enough respect for sovereignty / commonsense not to get involved in a war with what essentially would be most of Africa. We didn't always hold this view, in fact European nations were once very keen on invading Africa, it was called colonialism back then too.
"My question for Americans is this, why not worry about South America? We have our own septic tank to clean on this side of the globe."
Certainly true, America owes a possibly unrepayable debt to the people of South America for almost two centuries of colonialism, political machinations, and support, both directly and indirectly of regimes responsible for mass murder. This doesn't however, reduce Africa's immediate need for aid in the least.
"Look to the churches and the charities of merit to do their work."
This contradicts the authors entire point (one I happen to agree with) that real structural change in Africa is needed, rather than a temporary band aid (no pun intended) alone. Additionally the fact that 'the churches' are placed first in this sentence, and are in fact mentioned at all, given their complicity for much of the aids epidemic in Africa, tells me that the poster is a Christian conservative; and hence by almost by definition irrational and motivated by hate. Don't agree? Then look to his most recent post, which is entitled 'Liberal men like dick' (the post isn't even about homosexuality - but even the title is dripping with seamy prejudice). Looks like this blog lives up to its name – 'Schadenfreude', literally 'taking pleasure in the misfortune of others'. - cal0001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dam typos i was angry and typing fast
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Do you know what will happen if the G8 cancels all debt to these dictatorships? The dictators will buy new tanks, aircraft, rifles, cars, etc. "Why didn't they buy food, medicine, and other public goods for their citizens?", you ask. Because they want to keep their citizens weak so there is no uprising against their regime. "Well, that's not very nice of them. We didn't see that coming.", you add.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Good intentions are NOT ENOUGH!
"But every seasoned aid worker knew at the time, as they know now on the eve of Live 8, Geldof's long-awaited successor to Live Aid, that there is no necessary connection between raising a lot of money for a good cause and spending that money well, just as there is no necessary connection between caring about the suffering of others and understanding the nature and cause of that suffering."
http://prospectmagazine.co.uk/article_details.php?id=6937 - dartmouthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0because they are supporting the ONE voice campaign, if you visit the website you can read about it.
