- halophoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is a very good and comprehensive list. It contains several categories of applications from video encoding to 3d rendering to PIMs and test editors for coding, and since it's at the Anandtech forums, it's being updated with new people's perfences and software suggestions, and other opinions on the software in the original post. Good link and a really good list. ;)
Definitely +dugg; for a change the description's right, it is worth a bookmark. - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I haven't heard of quite a few of them actually. It's new to me. Dugg.
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Skwerl: So you're using a OS/CPU combo that probably less than 3% of the global market does, and you're complaining about a lack of software. Nice.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7People don't usually bother to pirate free software...
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5work.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Update Dec., 4th 2005: I didn't realize that I wasn't subscribed to this thread. I added a bunch more.
So it's less than a year old in a sense - burkay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, Microsoft makes you install stuff, because when they include it for free,
then it is called a monopolisation and somebody makes them pay big bucks for that.
So it is practically illegal for Microsoft to distribute "high quality accessories" with the OS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Win ME and XP both have built-in .zip support. Get over it."
Win ME?! Damn, hav eyou been in a coma? :)
I don't know if you can create zips in Windows by default. I know you can decompress them. But PLENTY of things come in other formats. I typically install WinRAR so that I can access tar, gz, bz2, rar, arc, arj and so forth. Still, it sucks to have to install extra stuff just to extract more than one file compression type.
7Zip is pretty cool, but the 7zip format itself seems to be windows specific. Meh. - thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good list. I definitely haven't heard of some of those.
- Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good idea, but the list is not very organized. They should really make it more obvious what each piece of software is supposed to replace (e.g. GIMP is supposed to replace Photoshop). Because they don't do this, it really doesn't separate itself from any other free software list.
That said, a few good programs on that list. - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Gaim isn't on the list? Come on now...
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How do I replace that feeling of satisfaction?
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I you want to steal, go ahead. I'd rather have the free stuff. In most cases the commercial software is full of bloat anyway. And tries to do more then what the user wants it to do. In the process of trying to "make life easier for the user" it embeds itself into you OS (kinda like a tick I would think) and slows everything down.
While most of the freeware apps just installs into it's own directory, throws a registry entry up for itself and has a file type association. MS Office is the biggest overkill program that I can think of right now. Why do I need to install 2 cd's worth of crap and 30 minutes of install time just to create a document or spreadsheet.
And there are some commercially available free programs that I stay away from also. Adobe reader is one. How can Foxit read PDFs just fine with 2.5 megs worth of code. But Adobe needs 20 megs now to do the same thing. Plus reminders to upgrade to the full version, plus java code to keep me up to date. It takes forever to open a PDF. And on and on. - jetta421, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm hearing sirens heading your way..... :-)
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check out a program called UltimateZip... I guess it has a nag, but it does .rars and even the unix-y formats (.gz, .tar, .bz2.) I like it quite a bit.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Not as good as Neowins

- Tom | http://www.tomwrote.info - DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Awesome, the best list of this type I've ever seen (although it would be nice if they indicated which ones were open source.)
Dell, Gateway, HP, if you're listening, you should give this list out with every PC you sell. - MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Go here: http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?stquery=&sort=percentile&sortdir=desc&offset=0&form_cat=18
Use these filters (below) and you will find over 7000 free programs for Win32!!
[Require] All 32-bit MS Windows (95/98/NT/2000/XP)
[Exclude] 1 - Planning
[Exclude] 2 - Pre-Alpha
[Exclude] 3 - Alpha
[Require] Has Released - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Am I the only one who has no idea what you are talking about?
- aura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=2&c=9&t=4386 a bit old, but still some good apps.
- Xalorous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2check spelling and post again.
I usually manage to resist the whole grammar nazi instinct, but the first word I saw on the webpage is misspelled. (Catagorized -> Categorized) - xtracto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3FOR ALL UR DVD BACKUP NEEDS:
NETFLIX + DVD43 + RATDVD
a great combo, I use it when I *really* like the movie I saw. - SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, hey, they list GIMP, too. That's freeware, but it's nowhere near a *replacement* for Photoshop. It's as much a replacement for Photoshop as it is a replacement for Visio.
GIMP = worst interface ever. Less intuitive that PS, and that's saying *a lot*. - ArchonSG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd rather use free and good opensource sofware then bloatware even if its easily pirated. I mean, come on, at least 99% of the readers on this site knows how to get crap that aren't worth stealing (including porn) but the bottom line is why do it if you don't have to.
Its a good list, and while it might not be "new" to you, I am sure its still new to alot of people who never bothered looking things up. Which probably is another good chunk of users here too. :) - jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And the free alternative for Flash?
- handeyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://techtakeover.com/all.htm
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Lol, yeah... this is a relatively outdated list, but it is still (for the most part, and it's still updated every now and then) useful.. but I don't see why this is being front-paged X.x
What I would kill for, though, is a list of things to do while you're bored (offline, for my laptop, not necessarily games, anyone got one?). - rhawk301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, +digg for excellent information. Check it out!
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice little post. No mention of Scribus which is great, hopefully my commercial printing supplier can handle the PDF it exports.. news at 11.
- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=320017
link copied here so diggers can see it without having to see TomP signature spam - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im still trying to find a program that can replace Nero or WinAvi for burning dvd video 's i.e. video_TS folders (.bup, .vob, .ifo.)
cdburner xp pro claims it is not completely supported.
any ideas?
falafelboy at gmail dot com - PantherX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to agree on Anti-Vir. Been using it for years... recently it just started letting you auto-update without nagging the users, so I don't have to go update my father's computer every month like I had been doing. I also have it scan his computer weekly. Good stuff.
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah Seumas, you can both unzip and zip with the default Windows XP zip utility. However, I haven't used either feature since I've found 7-Zip :-D
Another excellent tool that I'm surprised didn't make the 'cut' is FilZip. - MannaPC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best list I have seen in awhile.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apart from Alcohol 120%, all of what I use is OSS/free. It's pretty hard to find something that can replace Alcohol's functionality.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Link is not working....digg effect?
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1www.google.com is a good place to start.
www.sourceforge.com ;) - Argentice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"GIMP = worst interface ever. Less intuitive that PS, and that's saying *a lot*."
Then checkout GimpShop

http://www.gimpshop.net/ - raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, 7zip has been ported to Linux/BSD/etc. but only in command line form. The package is called "p7zip" and the executable is called "7za". So while you can't use it as a Winzip equivalent, I think it's only a matter of time before file-roller and ark and the other Linux archive managers support it.
And I've never used anything that compresses highly redundant large files as well as 7z. I had an 8MB executable that had to have 4 different patched versions distributed with it (don't ask) for a total of over 40MB, and the resulting .7z file was about 4.5MB.
As for the topic in general, I've been referring Windows users to nonags.com for years and nowadays I hand them a copy of TheOpenCD with a few extra things on it. It reduces the amount of calls I get to disinfect their machines of spyware and viruses (I'm talking unpaid calls by friends and family, mind) and getting them to use stuff like Openoffice and Gimpshop will make it easier for me to move them over to Linux later, though that's not really a priority for me. - jetta421, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MultiMon taskbar (not PokeMon) is useful...the rest I've seen in one post or another before. Nice to see it occasionally for those who might have seen these useful FREE tools for the first time. Note to others: AVG Antivirus uninstall caused me some problems on more than one occasion. I'd still recommend that AV software should be purchased. Please no negative diggs for saying that!!!

- retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@coolwind - I'm talking about in the middle of a class while I have everything required done; I'm not going to break out a bowflex and do some benchpressing right in the middle of a class :P Gaming isn't exactly what I'm talking about, I'm just looking for some stuff you can be creative in like... ascii art studio (like paint, but saves as an ascii text file), and Dismount (ragdoll simulator, google it)... and such.

I cannot count this as accurate or up-to-date in any way, sorry. (I'm usually not in the "digg"/"no digg" bandwagon, but here's my first: "no digg!") - anniecuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hi Everyone,

www.thefilebay.com - iSwizBeat, on 09/08/2008, -0/+0There is nothing wrong with downloading pirated materials. If only the companies would lower their prices then people wouldn't download as much.
