- patonw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I half expected Ballmer to personally fly down there and beat the living crap out of them while yelling "I will f--king bury you, you communist hippie penguin!"
- Quake120, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I used to work for MSN doing technical support, and on Halloween one year, one of the techs came dressed as Tux and was handing out Knoppix CD's. It was very funny, even the higher ups were laughing at it.
- SpookyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have been an avid Linux user for years now, and I am shamed by this type of idiotism! Donning cheap penguin suits and invading a Microsoft convention just aint the way to advertise one of the worlds greatest inventions. This kind of activity is shameful to Linux, its community and developers.
- SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, Ubuntu is mentioned in there.
I don't know who is the bigger dork, them for doing this, or me for watching it ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Would have been better if they'd started a ruckus.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Isn't virginity funny sometimes? who spends their time and money protesting computer software?
- mark_1581, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with spookyman. I think this hurts Linux more than it helps it.
- riskable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article should be re-titled: "College students attempt to make statement by acting like college students."
I'm a huge linux fan but the idea they had was more interesting than the execution.
Two Linux guys enjoying themselves in a room full of hundreds of Microsoft users is actually a great analogy to real life. Only difference is that in real life, the Microsoft users don't know they use and rely on Linux every day. - ke4roh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3> Why not also go to the Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta and picket
> them with RC Cola or Pepsi signs too while you're at it?
Simple. Buying Coca Cola doesn't limit you to only using Coca Cola products. You can even put an RC Cola can inside a Coca Cola drink huggie! On the other hand, if you want to read or write documents for Microsoft software, your options outside of buying those programs are quite limited. Likewise, if you want to run Windows games, you'd better have a copy of Windows. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This wasn't a protest, it was a prank. Listen to how much the guys are laughing and everything. I don't see this helping our image very much.
- cobra1122, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that was the first and last time he will have a girl on his knees.... lol enough said
gogo linux user =P - obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice idea. I had high expectations... but it didn't play out at all. Very boring.
- Anamith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think some guy mentioned Ubuntu in the video.
- Urgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha this is awsome. I graduated from UMass a couple of years ago so this was even cooler for me. This actually looks like it happened in October though so its getting to be old news. Still glad it was posted though.
UMass is 'Information Technology Showcase School'

UMass LUG:
http://www.umasslug.org/ - deadlygopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2godshand, i think you mean
apt-get install life - agimat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its not like theres a lack of places where they can give out those cds.
I'm a linux fan myself but that just comes off as rude. Just because they're not forcing anyone doesn't make it ok. - joshfraz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These guys should use their computer skills to edit their video before posting it... that was the most boring 6.5 minutes of my life... might have enjoyed it if it had been edited down to 1 or 2 minutes.
- BurninatorX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1=[ That was just stuid. Those costumes looked like someone took a baseball bat to TUX.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sad that activism has come to this: people protesting operating systems instead of things that actually matter.
Why not also go to the Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta and picket them with RC Cola or Pepsi signs too while you're at it? - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty stupid, but you know, I bet they had a good laugh about it and probably went home afterwards and jerked off to some of those GIMPed swimsuit models with the linux tatoos on their *****.
- IanAction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If I saw someone in a penguin suit handing out linux cd's i'd get some of my friends and we'd beat the ***** out of the guy. "
A guy in a penguin suit handing out linux cds is too much for you to take on all alone? - drn666, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Idiocy like this is why Linux is having a hard time getting acceptance in the corporate world.
--digg for contributing to the notion that Linux is just for college kids. - laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"It's not like MS is forcing people to use their products."
By controlling the market the way they do they are forcing people to use their product. - radda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"deadlygopher said :

it didn't work b/c you're not root!!
try: sudo apt-get install life
It worked for me! /sob - PonchoHobono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's stupid. what a bunch of dorks.
- modifiy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just lost 5 mins of my life with watching that. If only it would have been funny or good but instead lame so very very lame. Streakers would have been better.
- superspak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"What a tacky thing to do. These people were going to a Microsoft event, not Linux. I'm sure they are going to just rush home and install a CD they got from some dumbass in a costume. For all they know these CD's could have rootkits on them.
I wonder if they would think it was cool if MS fans pulled a similar stunt at a Linux event or at the opening at a Apple store?"
so your suggesting that MS fans actually exist?! thats a good laugh - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny idea, but horribly executed.
Just watch the first 40 seconds of the video. After the girl on knees joke, it's all down hill. - kymudder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I've been walking the fence for a few years and have made the switch to Linux (mandrake, knoppix, fedora) numerous times, only to find myself back to Windows. When I can pull it off the shelf, install it and it support all of my hardware, then I'll make the switch perminent. It just isn't there and I don't think it ever will be. If it does ever get to that point, it'll be so much like Windows, it won't even matter and it won't be "free". It's only free if your time has no value.
- TimU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>apt-get install life
>LMAO! I did that, it doesn't work :(
apt-get install xlife - MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats so funny great digg
- andpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those guys were lame hardcore...
- smablue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best way to get people to convert to Linux is by getting them to use knoppix.
- sital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have nothing against Linux, but the video was too long and pointless. They needed a Mac to edit it better, haha.
- kinderstod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome, because businesses who are considering Linux don't look at this and think "Wow, what a bunch of childish morons."
- sirplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoever said "wonder why people don't take linux seriously" is living in a cave! linux is deadly serious and a lot of fun. no sensible company would dream of starting a system on windows servers unless they are in a hurry to fail. those who are stuck in windows legacy hell, my sympathies, get out as soon as you can. this is a funny vid - rather uneventful though. i too was for a confrontation with herr balmer. maybe he would leap around screaming and hollering, he's good for that.
- slackingest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, I work over in the IT department at Umass Amherst. I am also a long time Linux user, and I've been pushing to get official support for the operating system on campus. And this really irritated me.
So, the deal is, Microsoft put down some ridiculously large amount of cash for some new computers and technical resources at the university library. In exchange, Microsoft get to call the campus a "flagship technology school" and use them as a talking point in advertising and PR and the like. Students get a bunch of nice computers to use, and so it seems worth the exchange, as the project was unlikely to have happened at all without the donation.
There are both Macs and PCs down there, so it's not like it's a Microsoft only zone. There are no Linux desktops, though. Should there be? It'd be nice, and probably relatively easy to support. But it's hard enough to convince the powers that be as it is, even without the LUG's antics. We've now got this whole "Linux equals bad press" mentality to have to deal with, and it makes actually getting anything useful done in terms of more widespread adaptation difficult.
So, yeah, no digg. - rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is so sad. As I've often said before, you Linux fanboys creep me out.
- jondoe73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know how to prove this but I was one of the people in the costume, Were were handing out Ubunutu. Were were just so pissed off because UMass took this huge "bribe" from microsoft for their new learning commons. Here's our website: http://www.umasslug.org/index.php/Main_Page and you can find the orginal video here http://www.umasslug.org/lugfiles/umass_ballmer_2005.avi Woot! linux!
- sirplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey man, nice work :)
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow. that was lame. you cant think of anything more productive to do with your day?
"We're running around in penguin suits hoping that people will take our operating system seriously."
People like this are a detriment to the cause. - jondoe73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To slackingest,
I, (the one with the long hair in the video), don't dissagre that you at OIT shouldn't have taken the money or the computers, it a great benifit to the students here at Umass. Our point of dressing up in those suits was just to get the idea out there that our other ideas and other solutions. Also we just felt that it wasn't cool for a monopolistic componany like Microsoft to use us to forward their politcal agenda IE (.odt vs .doc).
Plus it was damn fun making a ass out of ourselves cause noone could see our faces! We just wanted to have fun.
Also to kymudder try ubuntu its got great hardware support! - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good job, I hope there will be less MS brains in this world, thats my only dream.
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"A guy in a penguin suit handing out linux cds is too much for you to take on all alone?" LOL! The irony of that cowardice is just too much!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2mcguyver -"it's not like MS is forcing people to use their products"
your such a fscking MS troll it's not funny. they ARE forcing people to use their products through closed standards and consistently introducing incompatablity to people attempting to make compatable products.
they refuse to collaborate with other developers and they also threaten dealers who try to sell other products besides MS. - thats a fact proven in court in their anti trust trial - which they were GUILTY of btw.
BUT OH NO, their not forcing anyone are they? you bloody idiot honestly. - skwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0{{Those guys were lame hardcore...}}
LOL! Yes, but this stuff works sometimes. There are still the idiots dress up in chicken suits to advertise chicken sandwiches.
And I must agree with the guy who has switched back to windows after umpteen tries at Linux. It's great running as a server, but when I need to do some serious video editing, or image editing (as with photoshop) the only viable option is Mac or Win, and since I only have an old iBook Mac and umpteen PCs, I'm usually in Windows more often than not.
I give the guys a C- for creativity, a D- in persuasion, a B+ for promotion by giving out free discs, and an A+ in making royal asses of themselves. - skizatch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah that was a pretty boring video. No digg.
- joshGwyther, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I'm all for Linux, but....uh, ya, I'd have to agree with the get a life comment. These guys are such dorks they are still talking about how cool it was.
- skater2968, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So where the hell was steve balmer. They should have personally handed him a copy!!!
- CaptHarlock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1BSD is a better fit for diggers, it's more ecclectic and give off no perma-virgin vibe.
