- lemmingscanfly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35Haven't they already got many 256kbps DRM-free songs on it?
- Bob042, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31So, they're basically going to have two buttons for a song? "Buy now" and "Download for free"?
- Verdanic, on 10/10/2007, -7/+30Limewire puts computers to slow and painful deaths.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -7/+28People still use limewire?
- AXNJAXN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free; you are a pirate...
- Zaggynl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Napster.
Or did I just fail a sarcasm check? - woodcoxcb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Yeah it's all the myspace surfing, OMG saying teenagers that are just discovering it...
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Yes, you failed.... Horribly. Now turn in your digg credentials for two days as punishment.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Honestly, I hope that they do well. The more sources of DRM-free digital music, the better for the consumer.
- dude187, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I hear lots of people bash Limewire, but honestly Its open source, cross platform, starts pretty fast, the nag screen is ONE dialog box when it starts (and you can get builds that remove the nag screens, it IS open source after all), the interface is pretty intuitive and works well, and I've found every song I've ever looked for on Limewire. It may not be my first choice for whole CDs or movies (thats where bittorrent comes in) but for looking for an individual song it works great.
If you digg me down, then suggest a better p2p client for Linux that "just works"... - frozenyoghurt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Frostwire is the way to go
- sv650touring, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Surprisingly, non techie types love it still. Oh well, if LimeWire actually attempts this, it will fail and hopefully put them out of business.
- TexanPsycho, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Nah, you're thinking of the < 128kbps ones.
- abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's why you use a client like Azureus where you can tell it only to grab certain files.
- shark72, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's funny: we all say that when the record labels wake up and offer high bitrate, DRM free music, then we'll stop pirating. Somebody's stepping up and doing just that... and we laugh at them. I guess piracy really isn't about quality or DRM after all... it really is because we want something for nothing. Good to see that some people will openly admit that.
- nolesfan247, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Limewire indeed has been free of adware, malware, etc for quite some time now, but the CPU and memory usage footprint is still enormous...
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -1/+61. spyware in one word, dumbass.
2. since when can mp3s contain spyware? since the average user is used to having the .mp3 made invisible by the Windows Explorer, they'll click anything with any kind of band name in it.
3. since these mp3s are coming from offical sources [aka the music labels] there WILL NOT BE ANY MALWARE.
infected files come not from limewire itself, but the users of the service, duh. - sTiVo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Awesome. Now they can follow the same trend of popularity similar to Nupst-...Nipsture...Mapst-...wait, what was it called again?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Its over 9000. thats why i use frostwire.
- reporterjason, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Limewire's problem has always been its gaping memory leak. Other than that, I'm surprised to see a "legitimate" download service finally waking up and trying to convince the industry to get on board with the DRM-free ideology.
- alpha94, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10What are you guys talking about? Limewire hasn't had adware for many years now and has a very small CPU/MEM footprint. It's actually quite good.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Didn't they say that about the new Napster too?
- yugiohdan6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i hope it succeeds because then that just shows that drm free music can sell. and then maybe the other stores will follow with a complete catalog of drm free music
- ecuaman801, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8I like Limewire. It's a lot better than back in the Kazaa days...
- bocaJWho, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, as a ResNet technician at my college, I see a ton of computers come through with limewire - some even have bearshare - ewwe.
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Don't you mean "Ahh, Limewire... the free music source for retarded teenagers?"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's not a memory leak, it's ***** Java.
- rootchino, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Scour Exchange FTW?
- adude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But the article itself said: "Napster's utter failure to gain any appreciable market share"
- nanoware, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6fuc* limewire, frostwire all the way baby!!!!!!!
frostwire.com
no spyware 8-) - PixelVision, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake.
- SATURN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well... Gnutella is good for old stuff that doesn't have any active torrents. And for a quick single song download.
- BLACKEAGLE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1sounds good to me
- SATURN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What does this mean for the third party Gnutella clients like Acquisition?
- steal_apps01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you watched Bad Copy, Good Copy, one guy says one good thing; you can't compete with free. which is true especially when the music is in 320kbps mp3 where it's high quality, or like flac a perfect copy of the original. Besides Limewire is used, mostly, by people who don't use torrents or irc or usenet and think limewire (as in program, they don't understand connections or networks either) is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Once they see it costs money to use Limewire they will go to another program to get their free music.
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Frostwire is a little strange, it tells me there is an update available.. then goes ahead and installs the latest limewire.
- Samtheman007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1or phex,I love phex
- steal_apps01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you can download only chosen files through most bittorrent programs, you don't need to download the whole thing.
- steal_apps01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1if limewire starts a pay service it will affect all files on the network not the program itself, the program like a door but what's behind the door is shared by limewire, frostwire and others, so this effects all programs that access the gnutella network.
- cam2009, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Torrents for movies/TV/programs, SoulSeek for music. Takes a while to get used to the setup, but it has just about everything, up to the obscure Japanese indie bands, and 98% of everything is a complete album, files listed so you can pick and choose, bitrate is shown.
OiNK is the best if you want the highest bitrate and speed, but it can be a chore getting your ratio up, and obviously getting an invite. Limewire is a joke if you use any combination of these, though. - championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OiNK is a painful site to be a part of.
After getting my invite, i've spent most of my time trying desperately to seed wherever possible and get my ratio up so i don't get booted later on.
It's a good system really, but I wish some of the heavier uploaders would give the rest of us a bloody chance once in a while!! - championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you don't need to sensor yourself.
Digg will do that for you, for those users with the profanity filter checked. - allenc71, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This will be the end of Limewire......viva la Frostwire
- KniteWulf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Beware Limewire music, especially if you have a Windows based MP3 player, like the Zen.
- rob3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1w000000000000.. finally there might be legitamate music downloads of big artists on linux!!!! w00000t
- Topher06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0LimeWire still Java based? I love applications that take 4 minutes to load on a dual core machine.
- kevinrmcguire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I still use Limewire. I'm curious to see how this new plan will pan out. I fear the end of the P2P software side of Limewire.
- SharrockKwame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No matter what the level of your ability, you have more potential than you can ever develop in a lifetime.
