- Ameenakel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25Bring back The Screen Savers!
- newbill123, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16While this may be a new interview with Leo, practically every day since the release we get Leo's impressions of the iPhone in his (or someone's) podcast. Best: it's a beautiful device that lives up to its hype. Single biggest flaw: No third party applications and an arrogance on the part of Apple that they know what should be on the iPhone. If you can wait for version 2, then wait; otherwise get one now and deal with the small quirks and hiccups.
- staticblake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Don't know why you would be dugg down for saying that....The Screen Savers was an awesome show.
- LDinOR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+64 minutes and the link's already busted! It's cool, I'll wait for a more savvy person to post a mirror. Gets my digg anyway, because it's "Leo".
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I bet they are tied in negotiations with record labels, who probably want to charge $2+ a ringtone, as they do on other carriers. Obviously, Apple won't want to sell ringtones for more than they sell the songs themselves in IMS, so I bet this is the sticking point. I hope they end up just allowing any mp3, although it seems unlikely that they would pass up a chance to also sell ringtones.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The only reason you can't do it is because Apple will put a DRM on the ringtones they sell on iTunes that will tell to the iPhone that it can use that file as a ringtone. DRM Suck doesn't it?
- mattpippen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well, even at that the interview had plenty more content that was quite interesting.
- Namesbond, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Leo was awesome.
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Solder isn't an issue - it's two solder points, and ones that are of decent size unlike an Xbox modchip or something. Unless you're the type that doesn't know by which end to hold a soldering iron. Getting the phone open without mangling the case would be the problem.
- siraim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I believe your sarcasm detector is broken...
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The woosh you just heard was the sound of the joke flying over your head.
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Really? Any of the hour-long podcasts over at TWIT start within two seconds for me, and I typically have similar results at any other site that has enough bandwidth. You must have a slow connection, as mine's nothing to write home about.
- miniboss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Personally, I dont like any product (regardless of brand) to be reviewed so early. Think about it. It's pretty sick that the day of the iPhone's release there were dozens of podcasts, print reviews and news stories reviewing the thing. Obviously it's a good product but how the heck do you know all the true pros and cons when you've only had it a few hours.
I've always felt that all reviews should be revisited several months later because that's when the hype wears down and people are able to judge things with a level-head. Because who really goes out and spends a ton of money on a product (iPhone, computer, car, house) and then immediately starts pointing out the flaws. - noblepenguin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not sure how accurate this is but I remember reading somewhere that the current ringtones turned out to be plain jane AAC files (w/o DRM).
- SlashNot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i got it to download using speed download on the mac. clicking "get episode" in iTunes did nothing, as well as the direct link on matt's page being down.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow that had to be one of the fastest MP3 start ups I've had when listening to something that big. Usually you have to wait at least 30 sec. for the browser to unfreeze to even start it playing.
- mentor972, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Podcast Spam
- Skeuomorph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'm getting bored with this "no third party applications" refrain. This is a web 2.0 thin client.
More "third party applications" already work on this device than any non-AJAX capable cell phone. There are already iPhone tailored games (http://ichess.morfik.com/), utilities (http://www.gasapp.com/), SSH (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mressl/webshell/), to do lists (http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/502-ta-da-list-for-iphone), instant messengers (http://www.meebo.com/), and more.
There are more third party developers with the skills necessary to create applications for this phone than there are for any non-AJAX capable phone. - Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, the ringtones that are on the phone are normal .m4a AAC files, if the filesystem dump the iPhone hackers got to is anything to go by. So whether or not there's some negotiation nonsense going on right now, you can bet that we'll have custom ringtones for free by just adding files to the ringtones folder within a week or so, so long as the hacks keep pouring in.
- brycelb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Leo is always interesting. He makes a very good point in saying that the phone would be much more robust with third party apps. Can't argue. He also says it's the best phone out there. If you use one yourself you have to come to the same conclusion. Nothing compares. When you throw in the fact that it is in it's beginning days it seems obvious that the device will continue to improve. Now throw in the obvious fact that most of the third party apps will appeal to an ultra minority of uber geeks, Apple once again hits the mark for the masses.
- ldog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So, AJAX clients allow you to connect to a bluetooth devices?
AJAX clients make use of the 3D hardware for gaming?
AJAX work well in places where you don't have an internet connection?
I've actually written several AJAX applications in the last 2 years and can attest to its usefulness, but I'm getting bored with this "This is a web 2.0 thin client." refrain.
The iPhone is a pretty cool piece of hardware, and it's a shame that apple and ATT have it locked down so tightly. - SlashNot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1down, iTunes as well
- zflauaus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2But I think Leo took it a step farther and said, "Screw it," to Jobs. I can't recall hearing that anywhere really.
- mattpippen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0New mirror of the interview up on my website, right below the previous link. Thanks to Zach from macflauaus.com for the space and bandwidth!
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
Does it work? - zflauaus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Direct Link to Mirror in case main site goes down: http://matt.macflauaus.com/mouseclicks2.mp3
Please use main download link first. If that goes down, then use this link. Thanks.
No problem, Matt. - gypsi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0You didn't have to go all the way to this blog, Leo Laporte has been talking up the iphone to death for like 8 months
- Nick22, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Attack of the show is OK sometimes, but most of the time its crap. I liked it way better as TSS, or even just after they changed their name to AOTS. Pretty much ever since kevin left and sarah left the show just started to suck.
- Slick50, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2For thoughts on your lack of Ringtones, read this post http://lunchisforwimps.com/?p=12
- longterm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You're completely wrong; they're already planning the first update, just as they've done with the AppleTV. There will be updates all the time; because it's based on a version of OS X, this is easily doable.
- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1And now it's down. :(
- tdrizzle, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6I just don't understand how you cant have songs as ringtones on an iphone. You would think such a music-centered company would of made that a priority. Yes I'm aware apple says that "it's coming". It seems like it would be so easy to implement. I would wager the only reason that you can't do it yet is that apple hasn't figured to lock it down so you can only play songs you've bought from apple.

- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1i see what you're doing there.
- fr0ng, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Yes, because there is no such thing as a software update. The iPhone will be the exact same way it was on day 1, until the 2nd gen iPhone comes out.
- hoshwa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0Site is down, iTunes link still working
