- Mediaright, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39TWiT Army...ATTACK!!! Email your local stations guys.
- rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21He's going to be doing a show called 'The Lab' which is going to have a similar format to The Screen Savers. I'm not sure what network is picking it up, though.
I don't understand how he has the time for all of this. Is a day in the life of Leo Laporte 25 hours long? - cepher, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22amen brother; twit fan since it came on itunes.
and flag, you seem to be very close minded at the fact a computer can look good as well as not crash! suprise surprise! - mck9235, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Awesome, congrats Leo! :) You deserve it for giving up your weekends like that.
- zang74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Hey flag, what does this post have to do with Apple at all?
Oh yeah, it doesn't. It's funny. You complain and complain about the bias of mac fanboys, and yet you can't help but posting biased anti-Apple comments to a story that has absolutely nothing to do with Apple.
As for Leo, weren't you singing his praises a few months back when he said he liked the Zune? (prior to actually using one at length that is) - kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Pester NPR!
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Agreed! Congratulations.
Leo's the best. A genuine leader in radio broadcasting and podcasting. - Koros8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@flag564
Where did you get the idea that Leo is a Mac shill? I learned a lot of positive things about PC's and Windows from him on ZDTV/TechTV and even back before that with The Site. Leo is not overrated at all. I also learned a lot of positive things about Mac's from Leo too. Leo does not spread falsehoods, if he mentions something either positive negative from either the Mac or PC worlds, it is true and deserved. - chess007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7 To those saying Leo isn't knowledgeable... I'm convinced he asks questions that he alreadys knows the answer to so his guest will explain and so that the not so tech savvy members of the audience will understand.
It would be like if I was hosting a show about electronics and a guest mentioned desodering wick. I know what it is, but maybe the audience doesn't...So, i'd anticipate what some members of my audience were wondering... and ask,"So, what exactly is desodering wick? What does it do?" To educate people, you want to break things down as simply as possible. - tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just hope that hes finally getting some cash for all his efforts and that can help with keeping the TWIT network strong....
Side question for Leo: Will you adopt me? I would be better than Shooby :P - durrty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Laporte has become a total shill for all things Apple"
Compared to Keven Rose? Not even close (after watching the last Diggnation, I think he's great but that was a little much). Anyway back to the point, Leo is not a pushover for Apple, what he is, is easily sway-able. If you listen to his shows he is constantly into whatever the latest craze in the geek world is, from Secondlife to VoIP, and he readily admits it. Right now its cool to like Apple, and thats what he does.
I think he's great and do listen to TWiT, although mostly for Dvorak and other personalities, but its clear that none of them would be doing it if he wasn't pushing it. I am glad he is getting it pushed out further. - ryansac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hope he kicks Kim Komando's ass. I hate her.
- jerbroc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Quote "but still I don't why Leo is such a Clear Channel fan boy"
Because they pay him. Same reason most people work for the company they do. - dynamik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@fwee79
I actually felt the same way when I started listening to TWiT. It seemed like a waste of my time because I had previously heard (read) the news on Digg, etc. The show really didn't seem like it had anything unique to offer.
However, after listening to a few shows, it becomes completely obvious that he is there to serve as a conduit for the other guests. He has a wonderful personality and sense of humor, and he is an excellent host for all the shows he's involved in. The key word is "host". His purpose is to be a host, plain and simple. He makes no claims to be the expert on all the topics they speak about. His role is to facilitate the discussion while experts such as Steve Gibson and Paul Thurrott share their knowledge (and Dvorak his opinions and blog).
Also, I'm guessing he's a great deal more knowledgeable (you should upgrade to Firefox 2, it helps out with the big words) than he lets on to in most of his shows. It's easier, more respectful to the audience, and keeps the conversation flowing much more smoothly to ask a question that promotes discussion as opposed to just saying "Hey, could you explain that to the audience?" I never thought he was dumb, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by his technical proficiency when I started listening to Security Now. He genuinely knows his target audience and tries to keep the content accessible to everyone in that group.
Whether or not you like him really doesn't concern me. The reason I commented is because it just seems like you, and others who have similar attitudes, simply do not understand his role. He actively participates in a decent number of podcasts and is involved with how many others? I can't even imagine how much time that all takes. How many hours a week does he spend simply planning the shows and coordinating with guests? Would it benefit anyone if he let that all go by the wayside, so he could read Digg and a hundred other websites all day just so he could know all the information himself? Maybe he should just drop the guests, drop down to one show, and do that. Sounds like fun... Maybe if you realize that his role is to create, plan, host, and deliver a large number of high-quality shows to the masses, you'll see him in a different light.
So is he too easily impressed or just genuinely passionate about technology? - flag654, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I confess, I am a windoze fanboi myself though...
- mcnugget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6spudgunman, you are definitely getting dugg down but i can see your point of view.
I don't mind the bloke and he seems like a nice guy, but he can be a dumbass on some tech issues. However, I think that's why he's so likeable.
People don't want a self-important know-it-all nerd, they want a bloke who half knows what he's talking about and can present it to a wide audience in a relaxed and easy way. - Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And Digg is cool but sometimes people post lame comments.
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hopefully, Leo will avoid the crap that he was starting to get swarmed with... "I've got a virus, how do I get rid of it?" or "How do I secure my Windows XP?"
You could tell that after a while, he was getting ticked off by it, and he wanted some more original calls with interesting questions. - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You don't like her constant "fake applause" machine? I've rarely heard her ever mention anything remotely close to open source, I guess we know who her sugar daddy is.
- cosmoraymond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Congrats to Leo. I already listen to the netcast, but this is still a good thing.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@flag: "Goody, now we can have his mac shillcast all over the nation."
I'm not responding to you, troll, but rather to anyone taking your bait seriously. Let's be clear: Leo doesn't shill for Apple. In fact, I've heard him say some very unflattering things about Apple when it's warranted. All in all, he seems pretty damn fair-minded for a Mac user, and never slips into any overly gushy tones.
Also, I've heard the tech offerings on syndicated radio and they're all very Windows-oriented and tend to get all slobbery over the joys of being a Microsoft customer. I think even if Leo were to go on national radio and shill for Apple, it would only have the effect of balancing out know-nothing, boring PC shows like Kim Komando (I would love to see her get one freakin' fact about Macs right for once.) - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm sure it will suck a lot less than Kim Komando.
- randysouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do I hear the sound of a certain blond female computer show host whose initials are KK shuddering in horror?
- jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Might be worthy to note that you can listen to the kfi internet stream at http://www.kfi640.com/main.html
Its on Saturday-Sunday 11AM-2PM PT. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He's ninety better than you, flag564! ;)
Over the past year or so, flag564, I've read your many vehemently anti-Apple comments with no small measure of amusement. And while I've mentioned many times (several times directly to you, in fact) that I prefer OSX over Windows, I do own and use both OSs on a regular basis.
To be honest, I'm of the opinion that Microsoft produces many excellent products, some of which I own and use regularly. My question to you is: your obvious hatred of Apple seems to border on the pathological. What has Apple ever done or allowed to happen that can arouse such deep fear and anger in you? This goes way beyond simply not liking their products (which no one is forcing you to use or buy). Apple doesn't even carry a majority of the computer market so it can't be that you simply distrust the "top dog." It's something else. Something more basic. What is it, flag564, that drives you to spend your valuable time negatively commenting on so many Apple related stories? - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Funny according to a recent Twit Leo was considering dropping the KFI responsibilities as he had a full plate of many things. Guess the KFI show is here to stay!
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Look, some people LIKE Macs. Some people LIKE Windows. Some people LIKE Linux. This isn't bias. This isn't "being a fanboy," or any other ridiculous expression. It's just a preference, okay? Live and let live.
Leo is not a "shill". That, in case you don't know, and apparently you don't, originally meant somebody paid to stand in front of the store window, pretending to be a normal passerby, and bringing attention to whatever product that's on sale that day. It's somebody who works for, say, Apple, who gets paid by them, but who is dishonest and hides that fact. As Leo has said often, he doesn't take money, or gifts of any kind, from any company he's going to talk about. I believe him. If I found out otherwise, I'd be disappointed. The bloggers who took those gift computers from Microsoft so they'd write nice things about Vista, those are shills.
So when Leo talks about Apple favorably, that means he likes this or that. He also criticizes Apple, if you listen to him. He just likes Apple more than you do, and that, in your mind, means he's dishonest, because he has a different opinion from you.
I remember when Leo thought that the move to Intel would be a disaster. That was his honest opinion. Turns out he was wrong. - RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heh. And he was just talking about maybe quitting the radio show.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AFAIK, working Saturday and Sunday still means you're giving up you weekends..
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3he deserves to have a wider audience because his explanations are so user-friendly
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Leo is a great guy, and is very involved with his listeners and fans. I've emailed him several times and always gotten a response. I met him in person once at a mall appearance, and he was a straight up nice guy, that did nothing but care about his fans. He even was kind enough to hand write me a congratulations letter for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. If you got to know him even a little you would immediately retract your above statement.
To Leo- congrats, hopefully it will be airing in my area. - Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They just taped their last Call for Help. It's coming back as The Lab, produced in Vancouver in HDTV.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3she is going to ***** a brick.....
but like Rosco said.... she is not to bad on the eyes - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Great news. Leo's podcasts keep me sane during the work week.
Can't wait for his new show "The Lab". It is a reworked Call For Help and will be shot in High Definition (!). Now let us hope some U.S. Network will pick it up! - Solacetech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Leo is good at what he does, uniting tech minded people. He is a great networker and will go down in history as the guy who made computers and the internet good enough to be a syndicated radio show and Podcast...
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I hope he gets picked up here in Houston.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@king, you sir are an idiot, Premiere Radio Networks = Clear Channel, NPR = National Public Radio. They don't have the same interests, get a clue.
- DFrag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No wonder he's getting help editing and producing his TWIT network.
Cheers Leo, you magnificent bastard! - kyelewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3mcnugget, I would agree with you, except that a large majority of laporte's audience thinks he's not only the best thing since sliced bread, but the world's most knowledgable man and thinker on technology. Obviously, he isn't, and it's good to see that some people agree (and I don't mind if he doesn't know everything, it'd just be nice to see him say 'but i'm not sure' more often)
I don't listen to TWIT because of Laporte's over-extreme approach to advertising on the network, and that and other decisions he makes tends to affect the way I think about his other productions; as such, I used to quite like him, but my opinion of him now deteriorates every day. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He's the hardest working man in internet showbiz. Seriously, I am impressed by how entrepreneurial the Tech TV alumni are. They always seem to be working on some new project or show.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't hate her, I don't like her show, but she's a nice enough looking gal, I'd hit it.
- dynamik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@fwee79
Wow, he went from being old and unoriginal to letting people die? That bastard....
I think people are happy for him because they know he's toiled for years with his projects and now he's receiving some serious recognition. His radio show was probably the only thing that kept all his other endeavors afloat.
I do realize that they use Skype, which I didn't list transportation as a time-consuming activity. The hour or so of conversation is probably the least time-consuming task in the production process. A quick run-down of twit.tv lists him as participating in 7 podcasts (excluding the radio show) this week, and there's another half-dozen on his network that he's responsible for. That sounds like an absolute nightmare to have to manage. Aside from the podcasts themselves, there's constant business-related pressures such as marketing and finding people to transfer TBs of data.
I read the story, and I agree that what Clear Channel did was horrible and there are obvious arguments against media consolidation. However, your choice to use this as some sort of anti-Leo propaganda seems more than a little ironic since he has done more than probably anyone to support independent media and take it mainstream. I guess you're saying that you strongly support him then.
I'm not saying that everything he does is golden and we should all worship him. I personally listen to a fraction of the material he produces, and honestly, his radio show itself doesn't appeal to me at all. I mostly listen for humorous, light-hearted banter, not nitty-gritty technical details. I know how to use Google; I can find that myself. If you go into his radio show or TWiT expecting a style akin to DemocracyNow, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. - jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Send your email to the AM station that plays Rush Limbaugh or Coast to Coast AM. Both of those are Premiere Networks shows.
- jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think the fact is that when ZDTV started screwing him over (If I recall they wanted to sell the chanel to Comcast and Leo has a few shares of stock in TechTV they wanted him to give away for free. It ended up with Leo being off TechTV for a month or so because of contract issues) KFI called up more or less out of the blue and offered him the weekend radio show.
Now a few years later when he gave KFI notice that he wanted to quit so his weekends would be free they said, "Would you stay if we syndicated your show?" So while Clearchannel may be total crap for listeners, it seems like they might be good to their on-air talent. - kyelewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He's not 'giving up' his weekend time; he's trading that time for monetary return. It's not quite the same thing.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, the only radio station I know with any weight in Reno is KOZZ, and they just play music, and the most annoying morning show this side of Adam Corrola. I don't even know who to send my email to.
- cepher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as do i here in H-town. pester KUHF for that.
- darthchaosrspw, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Dumbass. Leo dishes out help for Windows, Mac and Linux. Sure, Linux users might be in the minority, but he doesn't turn them away unlike a certain ClearChannel whore who shill for MS.
