- kruykaze, on 10/23/2008, -1/+39The main reason would be that legal P2P is way behind in usage and it's picking up because legit content suppliers are realizing it's potential and benefits.
- veriix, on 10/23/2008, -1/+32This is news?
Illegal p2p baseline: anything and everything digital
legal p2p baseline: some software distribution
Which one could grow? - ArthurSucks, on 10/23/2008, -2/+19A very good use of legal P2P is Creative Commons music site Jamendo.com. There's a lot of very talented bands who just want to be heard.
- mykool, on 10/23/2008, -0/+13Where the cable companies messed up was not to let people purchase channels ala-carte. A full 1/3 of the channels on the basic cable package from either company here in Odessa Tx is broadcast in a language I do not speak or understand, now why would I want to pay for that?
- cloudberries, on 10/23/2008, -0/+10@mirunit
Upload capping? Thankfully there's plenty other people out there willing to share a file or two. - Rapax, on 10/23/2008, -3/+13Well that, and because so-called 'illegal' uses are just about maxed out at the moment. Once you can download HD movies faster than you can watch them, there's not really any point in increasing your use.
- gamepr0, on 10/23/2008, -0/+9***** you, leecher
- cloudberries, on 10/23/2008, -0/+9I'll have to try hard to justify continuing to talk to you soon, you strange, angry person.
- cloudberries, on 10/23/2008, -1/+10"Nope, I'm an angry person and want to vent my fury on anonymous internet people"
Fixed it for you again - honesttussey, on 10/23/2008, -0/+8Are you serious? You're actually proposing someone learn spanish by watching the spanish channels? I'm sorry but that's idiotic. Where I live there is a HEAVY spanish speaking population. When I flip through the spanish channels I see nothing but these whacky crazy stupid game shows. And I know basic spanish. They talk 100miles per hour. Impossible for a beginner to pick up.
This person's time would better be spent at the library trying to learn spanish then by watching the spanish channels. - cloudberries, on 10/23/2008, -1/+8"Unfortunately it's the normal people screwing over the RIAA/MPAA that's possibly a problem if you listen to the industry arguments"
Fixed it for you - AkronGuy, on 10/23/2008, -2/+8So, if you have 1 legal user for every 100 illegal users, and legal users grow to 10, there would need to be 1,000 illegal uses to match...
- insinuate, on 10/23/2008, -0/+6Yep, no real room to grow when its maxed out...ooooh look Incredible Hulk in WMVHD....
- bluscale, on 10/23/2008, -0/+5Who knew if you started to provide equal or better services than what's available through piracy that ppl would pay for it? Oh wait, almost everyone.
- rudy23, on 10/23/2008, -1/+6exactly. share the actual numbers.
- firstpost, on 10/23/2008, -1/+6Well, yeah, actually. And what's the problem with that?
- tikibaloni, on 10/23/2008, -1/+6My isp sucks. it slows down p2p. :(
- bluscale, on 10/23/2008, -0/+5This isn't pro MPAA. It goes to show that if that hadn't ignored/sued their customers but instead catered to there needs that they would make record profits. At least that's what I understood from the title :P
- PhilMoskowitz, on 10/23/2008, -0/+4Someone doesn't understand market saturation.
- Leprince, on 10/23/2008, -0/+4Join the club.
- Narcowski, on 10/23/2008, -0/+4The draconian measures justified by the DMCA are half the problem at least.
Greed on the distributors' part makes up a significant portion as well. Sell me something at a reasonable price, and don't treat me like a crook when I'm buying it, and I'll gladly pay. - MacParrot, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3It's their content. Whether or not it is already paid for by advertising when it is freely broadcast is irrelevant. If I want it and I'm willing to pay for it (and I think most people are basically honest if given the chance), then why not offer it in as many ways as people can consume it?
It's hypocrisy on the parts of the studios (both for audio and video) to cry about people pirating their content if they won't allow it to be purchased in the many different ways that someone will enjoy it. It costs them very little to transcode into different formats and I won't even bitch (too much) about DRM as long as I can use it with the equipment I already own. - MacParrot, on 10/23/2008, -2/+5It's unfortunate that the networks mostly don't know what to do with P2P. Most of them still don't allow downloading except through Amazon or iTunes for portable devices or to easily watch on most TV's or they make it mostly unpleasant by limiting you to watching it on a computer screen.
What if I want to watch it and don't have access to the internet at some point while traveling? Include your advertising and even charge me something like 99 cents or whatever. I'm willing to pay that price for the convenience of watching it when I want to as compared to a typical network schedule.
Two examples: Boston Legal. I love the show but didn't watch the first three seasons because it conflicted with something else I did every week. Finally watched a few episodes and looked on iTunes to get the seasons. No joy as they weren't there (still aren't except for season 5). I didn't want even MORE DVDs at the house, so I found other ways to get the digital content I wanted. Could have sold me four seasons of shows, but it wasn't available (I've been getting season 5 off iTunes). Lost opportunity strikes again.
Big Bang Theory. Another really good show I enjoy that was broadcast at a time that is inconvenient for me. Last season no problem as it was on iTunes so I was able to get each show at a price I was willing to pay. This season...not there. So I have used OTHER sources to get it. Another lost opportunity.
I'm not trying to say that iTunes is the BEST THING EVAH! I'm saying if you really want to monetize your content, make it available in every single way that people might pay for it. When you limit people's choices, you lead them to behavior that might not work out the best for you. - insanebrain, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3> "...as it was on iTunes so I was able to get each show at a price I was willing to pay"
Why should you pay for something that is aired 'freely'. That is the biggest part of the ripoff. You are paying for it while the money is already payed to air it. - honeybrass, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3Almost every person on the internet has at some point downloaded "illegally", mostly due to business not wanting to adopt different models. But still, that would make almost everybody on the net a criminal!!
This should be added to the ever growing list of unenforcible laws that are routinely broken. - tonyscha, on 10/23/2008, -1/+3Maybe if ISP would implement p4p which would increase the bandwidth transfer within the ISP network, and decrease bandwidth going out, it would save alot of money for everyone!
P4P FTW
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proactive_network_Pro ... - leerayIG88, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2Akron? you should call yourself MathGuy. good work!
- Myonosken, on 10/23/2008, -1/+3ROCK ON
Edit: What will Allah say about you breaking the law? - carlosos, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2Do you mean movies that you can download without DRM or do you mean movie downloads with DRM?
The first is impossible to find legally and the second one I wouldn't touch. - Swivelstick, on 10/23/2008, -1/+3Close the application while you doing other ***** *****
- Hodor, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2FTA: "20%... may skip TV ... "
I've already done this! I've completely canceled TV and watch all my shows on a series of tubes! - cis4smack, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2"So ISPs like Comcast are considering bandwidth caps at, say, 250GB/month......"
What's the cap for ATT? - Narcowski, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2If you look at the breakdown of where costs go, it is quite clear that the artists would make hundreds of times more money if people sent them a single dollar for each CD of theirs they downloaded (as opposed to 15-25 for a CD from the label) - artists make something like 7 cents per dollar their CD retails for.
- cloudberries, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1I'm waiting for smellovision. Which has probably already happened, I'm sure. I wonder if anyone has ever created a standard for digitally encoding smells.
- mykool, on 10/24/2008, -0/+1I know you couldn't tell from just reading one of my post, but I am the last person any one could call narrow minded, nor do I have a limited perspective.
Although, one might guess by my avitar I am a musician who has played and still plays many styles. Often I am the only white guy in the band.
check out WINNSLOW (with 2 n's) guess which one I am.
Besides watching TV should be mindless entertainment, If I want to learn something, If I want to expand my limited perspective...I use the interweb, a much better investment than cable TV. - tonyscha, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1why pay for them on iTunes, when you can watch them for free go to CBS.com or Hulu.com... ? I know most shows just started doing this last year so maybe your Boston Legal doesnt fit with my answer, but big bang theory would.
- Gizza, on 10/24/2008, -0/+1Actually isn't there a site somewhere we provides download to movie for which the copyright has expired?
- wigren, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1Silly Gimp, that's way to much technology for content companies to handle.
- MacParrot, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1Sure I can watch them on my computer for free via the methods you said. I would prefer to watch them either on my TV (I don't have or want the current version of AppleTV, so I just have a direct connection from my iPod) or on the go with an iPod (pick the portable digital device of your choice it doesn't matter for the argument). You're not always going to have access to the internet easily so what then?
If it isn't on iTunes or Amazon or Store XYZ then it isn't available for easily downloading it. The studios cry and complain about pirating, but then won't take the next logical step and actually offer it for sale in digital formats that people want other than DVDs AFTER the season is over. - ernmerica, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1Yes, but the illegal ones are more fun!
- DigitalBrian, on 10/23/2008, -1/+1I got to admit that after receiving 2 DMCA within the same day I chickened out, I was protected by Peerguardian but it did not matter, with the new Government Anti Piracy bill signed, it is just not worth risking your familys financial future with P2P
- skywake, on 10/23/2008, -2/+1just wait till holographic 3D interactive video comes out. :P
- chirpygimp, on 10/23/2008, -4/+3Can someone tell me a good legal download site for movies? I would definatly use one if it existed with like a fair monthy charge.
- inactive, on 10/23/2008, -2/+1I've given it some thought.. and I believe that technically its not the same as stealing a tangible product because if not for the p2p, I would certainly not be buying the products to begin with. So unlike stealing from a store, downloading something that you otherwise would never have bought doesnt cause any actual loss to anyone
- insanebrain, on 10/23/2008, -3/+1Statistics say that 43 % of all the statistics are wrong.
- gamepr0, on 10/23/2008, -3/+1i hope you didn't mean Paint Shop Pro by that.
i hope you didn't mean PlayStation Portable by that. - inc595, on 10/23/2008, -4/+1The problem with company like comcast fighting P2P is that the internet is one big P2P network, If no one peered with comcast they would have to pay for every bit of bandwidth leaving their network. If you peer with other networks then you both exchange bandwidth freely and save money. This makes their resets an act of hypocrisy. So legal P2P has been around for a long time.
- japboy, on 10/23/2008, -6/+2luv p2p!
- CRCulver, on 10/23/2008, -5/+1"A full 1/3 of the channels on the basic cable package from either company here in Odessa Tx is broadcast in a language I do not speak or understand, now why would I want to pay for that?"
Maybe to get some perspective outside of your own limited one? Spanish isn't a difficult language, and learning it provides many advantages ranging from easier travel in most of the Western Hemisphere to appreciating great authors like Cervantes, Garcia Lorca and Borges. And you can't learn Spanish without exposure, so be greatful you live in a market where it's as easy as turning the TV on. -
