Oh yes, 1337speak is just a gateway drug. Next thing you know he might be committing more heinous atrocities, like coding in Java!
I hope his Apple catches on fire. - kingcam, on 10/12/2007, -6/+99No, no the best is "Leet is a type of computer language,"
Uh last time I checked computer language looked like this 10111011001, and by the looks of it that police officer would be screwed if we all started talking in binary. - bokchoi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+89Up next: Is your child "pwning"? - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+75I was once a journalism major but after extensively watching the local news networks, I decided I didn't want to throw my life a way inventing new ways of scaring people. I don't care if you live in Seattle or *****, Wyoming: the local news SUCKS. Now I'm a geology major and feel I'm doing something productive for society :)
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+70Ugh, this is why I don't like watching Channel 10 news here in central Ohio anymore. The retardation their reports spread is unfathomable.

ORLY? - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45l33t speak is a gateway for your kids to start doing PHP. Most teens who use l33t speak will try PHP at least once. Some will go on to do it all day, everyday.
Talk to your kids now about the threat of PHP if you haven't already. It may be too late. Just be direct, and ask them if they've used PHP before. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53god.. people are so stupid sometimes..

- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36I don't think 1337 sp33k was "designed to keep parents in the dark." It's been around for a long time, and it's just used by n00bs to sound 1337.
- sscamatt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38We should start worrying about languages such as japanese and chinese. They may pose a large threat to our children.
- briguymaine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33slow news day. no more ps3 shootings to talk about.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -14/+40The report was sensationalist and over reaching. The extent to which this is "dangerous" is far less than they espouse. However, their point is valid. Very few parents know what the ***** pwned means, or lol, or roflmao, or anything like it. I'm a parent, and if I weren't a computer geek by trade I'd probably not have a freaking clue what leet speak is. I'd imagine most of us agree here the best way to protect a child on the Internet is to give them the tools to behave properly on the Internet; knowledge and the ability to make good decisions. However a ten year old is going to make some pretty stupid ass decisions, its part of growing up. So in the end a responsible parent will not allow their ten year old to use the Internet without checking in now and again. If said parent just attributes leet speak to some silly little nothing, they can be kept in the dark. I guarantee you thousands of little ***** are using leet speak right now to minimize how much info their parents can garner from their emails and chat sessions. If a parent is taught to google some leet speak words now and again so they have a clue, the report did some good.
Sensational and over-blown? Sure. Good point? Absolutely. -
