- Drakoi, on 03/06/2009, -6/+50legalize it, and tax it. problem solved. oh, wait. are we not still talking about pot?
who cares? legalize it, and tax it. - agentsrecord, on 03/06/2009, -3/+43How is a 'want ads' website responsible for promoting user generated content? Promoting suggests 'endorsing' content, where Craigslist simply allows people to post their wares/services. Can I sue Valve for 'racist discrimination' because some ***** kid calls me a '*****' when I kill him on one of their games?
- pagit, on 03/06/2009, -5/+35why don't the police use it to their advantage?
phoning up prostitutes and busting them
same with johns they can place fake adds
its just going to go underground and make it harder for police to stop it. - raidfibre, on 03/06/2009, -2/+27I thought she really wanted 200 roses. Who would want that many roses?
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -3/+27Sigh. Public officials will always waste our time with these ***** crusades just to get elected. How about you actually do something to crack down on real crimes instead of arresting consenting adults? Oh but I guess if you can't summarize it into a simple sound byte, there's no point doing anything about it.
- OPR8R, on 03/06/2009, -2/+23I guess they caught all of the rapists and murderers so they're focusing their attention on adults who are engaging in consentual sex (albeit for $$$).
Laws against prostitution are right up there with the "war on drugs" in by book... - DirtyVicar, on 03/07/2009, -1/+21Who ***** cares about two adults having consensual sex? What's next, going after stores selling wine on a Sunday?
- anxdiety, on 03/07/2009, -1/+15As George Carlin(RIP) one said: "Why is it illegal to sell something that is perfectly legal to give away?"
- regression, on 03/07/2009, -3/+16Why not legalize prostitution so the government can produce another income stream?
- ohhaiimbored88, on 03/07/2009, -0/+12they have disclamers stating they're not responsible for user content.
sherif is just after 15min of fame. - drex8, on 03/07/2009, -1/+10Surprisingly, PCWorld has a pretty good article on this http://www.pcworld.com/article/160825/craigslist_i ... It's not that Craigslist is standing idly by and profiting from this misuse of its services.
"Late last year the Web site began charging for ads placed in the Erotic Services section and required ID verification. All proceeds culled from the transaction were donated to charities."
Also, "Craigslist makes a point to slather its site with warnings and legal statements. It also dutifully removes illegal postings that are brought to the organization's attention. In effect, Craigslist does more to assist law enforcement when it comes to illegal activity than it does to facilitate or embolden its purveyors."
"A CNET article http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10190334-93.html details Craigslist's cooperation with police and highlights the many lawful deeds the Web site has done over the years -- a record ignored by Sheriff Dart's accusations."
I have a feeling that this Sheriff is emboldened by the acts of that famous Illinois FBI agent who brought Rod Blagojevich to justice, and putting up a act of his own. But he's targeting a web company which is known for it's good reputation and hardly profiting from its extensive community oriented services. - jasonh1234, on 03/07/2009, -1/+10It's true. Craigslist often e-mails me reminders of sales on hookers. Always telling me how clean they are, blah blah blah.
<rolls eyes>
This Illinois Sheriff ought to try picking up a newspaper classified section and having a peek. (Unless they aren't delivered to his cave under that rock.) - kameto, on 03/07/2009, -0/+8@NeoTechni
But making it illegal doesn't help either. If it were legal and routine inspections for proper paper work and conditions, just as any operating business, then it could possibly cut down on trafficking - inactive, on 03/06/2009, -1/+9by this logic, if you ever want to kill someone, use a an anvil made by a company that doesn't exist anymore. home-free!
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -2/+10Legalize it.
- conebone69, on 03/07/2009, -0/+7stupid cops.
- morpheus69, on 03/07/2009, -3/+10Totally Agree! The idea that a woman or man can't freely make money using their own body is repugnant. SO long as it's consentual, nobody gets hurt in a transaction of this type, so why is the government spending all this money fighting it?
Legalization would not only allow taxation but monitoring of working standards and health checks to control disease.
Some would claim prostitution creates demand for human trafficing, but as with drugs, if you legalize and there is now a perfectly safe and legal alternative, who's going to visit the illegal places? The human trafficing problem is worse today with prostitution illegal... - Autodidaddict, on 03/07/2009, -0/+7Not all erotic services are illegal.
Strippers trying to book gigs for a private party should not be advertising along with used couches on Craigslist, so there is a special section for "erotic services"
Get your head out of your ass.
Or maybe someone can help you, just remember to post it in the right section... - reaperhatch, on 03/07/2009, -1/+8hey hey... erotic service does not mean prostituting service you know. I baught an erotic cake on there. It was a cake in the shape of 2 naked women 69. THe only complaint I have is that the nipples were too red. like lipstick red. I only wish craigs list had more quality control. nipples are not like that ok. sexy cakes use a lot of frosting and have a lot of empty calories. I don't like that part. but if I get all worked about it I could always get a massage to relax.
- ColonialRule, on 03/07/2009, -1/+8Legalize prostitution.
Problem solved. - ITdude472, on 03/06/2009, -2/+9The ignorance of some people is astounding.
- hpymondays, on 03/07/2009, -1/+7Then you'd have to bust every single newspaper in this country with the "escort" section.
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -1/+7 anyone else here browse the casual encounters when bored
- buddahead9, on 03/07/2009, -1/+6exactly! assisted suicide. two consenting people. legalize it, tax it. bye bye problems!
- Eezyville, on 03/07/2009, -0/+5BRB going to craigslist
- djdavetrouble, on 03/07/2009, -0/+5You mean the chickenheads .
- DaviDTC, on 03/07/2009, -1/+624/m/ca looking for a good time.
haha digg is going down! - diggio, on 03/07/2009, -1/+5I'll be awaiting the new and improved Fredslists.
- trancelgic, on 03/07/2009, -1/+5But they charge "roses" & "kisses". :) Theres a game on a podcast called "How much is that Craig's List Ho?" http://se127.y84media.com I say leave them alone, they're doing what they need to do to make a buck. There are so many people out of work in this economy, go figure that they'll stoop to selling themselves.
- ifruit, on 03/07/2009, -2/+6How about do away with victimless crimes? Drugs and prostitution should be legalized, taxed, and regulated.
- ryan83189, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4Is ACME CO. still in business?
- Autodidaddict, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4Child prostitution is an invention of Craigslist. You're absolutely correct!!!!!!!!
***** - fuckingusername, on 03/06/2009, -8/+12I swear it original, submitted 23 hours ago , love ya Digg
http://digg.com/business_finance/Sheriff_s_lawsuit ...
- Dumbledorito, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4Actually, Conservatives claim it's immoral, but they patronize the whores in secret anyway. Liberals would vote for legalization for the most part, if it (1) wasn't political suicide and (2) there was regulation in place to help prevent the spread of disease.
- zephc, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4It's called Gregslist - get with the program, man!
- factsahoy, on 03/07/2009, -1/+5What a dumb-*****. This guy should be fired for not doing his job, when state budgets are strapped and there's real work to be done. Get out and do some police work instead of sitting on your ass trolling Craig's List.
- MacEnvy, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4Saying Craig's List caused this is as stupid as saying Remington caused a local shooting.
Internet sites don't cause people to be exploited. Social conservatives pushing lack of regulation (leading to organized crime) does. - MacEnvy, on 03/07/2009, -1/+5@anonymousmedic
I'd take Nevada's system of safety and regulation over the streets of any other major city in America any day. Nevada's system has been incredibly successful - why do you feel the need to spout lies? Got an issue? Cite the source and call attention to it.
But from all accounts I've read, you're much better off being a hooker in NV than anywhere else in the country. - MacEnvy, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4Your comments have absolutely NOTHING to do with this issue. Knock off the sensationalist propaganda and have a look at reality.
- MacEnvy, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4Yeah, of course it did. All of the worst laws this country has passed have always been in the name of "the children".
If they really cared about the children, they'd look at the studies done on the efficacy of prohibition of prostitution and attempt to leave a better future by making a valid attempt at fixing societal ills. As it is, all they can do is scream "PROHIBITION!" while their daughters rot in the streets, unprotected and at the whim of organized crime. - LordBalderdash, on 03/07/2009, -0/+3entrapment is very, very hard to prove. if you're browsing the erotic services ads and making calls, arrangements and showing up for a 'date', you're not getting off on 'entrapment'.
- PeppermintPig, on 03/07/2009, -1/+4Legalized, sure, but taxed and regulated? Come on? You want this ***** up of a government to do more harm to people?
- Autodidaddict, on 03/07/2009, -0/+3The number of women who are hooking that are SOLD as SLAVES is a really low percentage of the overall group.
I can't speak for elsewhere in the world, where in many countries I'm sure it's much higher, but here in the US most women chose to hook. Granted, they are often times "forced" into it with drug and alcohol addictions, poor or no education, mental health issues, abusive relationships and childhoods, but generally it's consensual.
Please stop reading propaganda. - doubledmateo, on 03/07/2009, -1/+4If they can show that Craigslist is definitely promoting, or gaining from such traffic then the case may have a leg to stand on. As it is, there doesn't seem to be much of a case. Why do people feel like every detail of our lives needs to be closely watched by someone?
- MortalynFlux, on 03/07/2009, -0/+3They do. But this is one sheriff that may not have the same pragmatic approach as other departments or agencies.
- MacEnvy, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2Probably up for re-election in 2010.
- blackturtleus, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2Last I heard prostitution was still legal in most parts of Nevada and so just as soon as the rest of the country catches up to Nevada this won't even be an imaginary problem any more! I say imaginary because here in the good old USA we still have dozens of laws against imaginary crimes/problems. When you consider the billions of dollars wasted on law enforcement efforts to deal with imaginary problems, it's no wonder that we're having an economic crisis. The war on drugs, for instance, is for us what Afghanistan was to the Soviets.
- lilokster, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Craig is a pimp. His site was made popular by prostitution, not job ads as he says. I just seen the news and he claimed the illegal activity was small compared to the legit activity, lol. I doubt it. Prostitution and sex ads amount to at least 30% of all ads posted. Probably more. If you put up a fake job ad on craigslist it will be deleted within minutes, or not ever show up at all. They want the prostitution ads to stay up. This has been going on for years. I'm surprised everyone is just now noticing.
Article: http://www.searchcraigs.com - diggimator, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2In fact, we already allow sex (duh), and sex with money (porn). It wouldn't be a big step to legalize what's already legal, if that statement made any sense. We can fine tune our laws to disallow slavery in the prostitution industry like we already disallow children in the porn industry.
