- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a technology that is starting to turn the corner. I have a couple of LED flashlights, and they are awesome. A few more years and we will be there.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very interesting article. On a related note Philadelphia's Boathouse Row recently had all of it's light bulbs replaced with LEDs. It's saving the city a fortune!

- angelwspr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i want. i want.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just use one of those mini-spiral floresent lightbulbs in my desklight and room. All the light of a 60W bulb and it just uses 13W and lasts a lot longer. A tad expensive (around CAD$12 per bulb), but the logevity and minimal voltage saves you a bundle in the long-run.
A bunch of traffic lights around town use LED clusters... super bright. - djdick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am sold on the CFL bulbs.... I only own two in my home but geesh what a difference....these puppies last forever....at least 1 1/2 years now.... i have a few fixtures in my home that have 5-6 bulbs each .... it would be worth changing them....nuff said!
- custerfluck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For an article, that sure read like a paid advertisement for C-Crane, especially since it Incorporated some of the exact same sentences as their radio ads as if it where part of the article.
- millmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just changed all the bulbs in my house to cfl by sunbeam, 11wats power consumption 45 watts of light output and the light is brighter and cleaner looking, and to kick it all the bulbs i got came from the dollar store dollarama here in stratford. there the u shaped ones not spiral shaped and now that i know where to get them im gonna build a string of them to power of my car for impromptu bush parties!
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been buying from superbrightleds for a while. Though MOST of their lights, as expect are NOT super bright. They can't be! The technology isn't saturated enough.
However, when luxeon becomes more mainplace tech, LED prices will DROOOOOOOOOP and DYAM we'll be some energy efficient mofos in the US. Luxeon makes some home lighting under the name LumiLEDs now, and they're very nice, but again, pricey.
I just like the differing flavors of white you can get out of them. Cooler and more true light than even the reveal bulbs and you can tweak em to any color you want in the manu process. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LED bulbs: a very bright idea when prices drop.
- skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use mini spirals everywhere in my house. The price has come down a lot really. Check walmart and various home stores. I usually get a pack of 3 for 6 bucks. It seems expensive considering you can get a pack of like 4 old ones for 99 cents, but if you're paying electricity bills, the savings will show up there and well worth it. Some tips for the mini spirals, get the ones that says "instant on". The cheaper ones will flicker a bit and lag before turning on. Those are crap.
- danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can pay with paypal too at that place. just ordered 4 of them. no tax from california and $4 shipping.

total came out to $88.20 USD for 4 36 LED bulbs. CANT WAIT! - hdherndon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LEDs are totally awesome, but for general lighting compact fluorescents are still much more efficient, and last a very long time. If you want to buy some LED bulbs though, the more power to you, they are very fun and efficient for task lighting where a focused beam is desirable.
C. Crane, although a good store for radios etc., has followed the trend of branding Chinese LED bulbs and selling them very expensively. Go to http://www.superbrightleds.com for some more reasonably priced examples, sometimes of the exact same products. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0come on .... if the prices were down just a BIT more, like ...$15-20/bulb then I'd replace every single one I have (not a ton). I'm sick of incandesent (sp) ones dying. Plus LED's look cool :)

same exact 36 LED lightbulb for have what CCRane wants.
I'm gonna get 4 of them for only 21 bucks each. - danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it would be perfect to use for a porch light thats on all night, every night. but at this price, i dont want someone to steal them.....
- danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont think they are going to be able to replace all my lights at only the equivalent of 30 watts per bulb
- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been sold on CFLs for a few years now, the biggest drawback was the price. You can now buy CFLs in the 13w (60w incandescent output) and 23w (100w incandescent output) from places such as Sam's Club for a steal. I buy the 5 packs which are priced around $15.00. Easy math: $3.00 per bulb. These are not the cheapo ones which buzz and flicker, they are GE bulbs. They put off less heat and draw less power so you can put the 100w output CFL in a fixture rated for only 60w and get amazing light. The very "cold feeling" CFL style light takes some getting used to but when you get your first electric bill you will be sold. These bulbs rarely have to be changed so they are great for outdoor fixtures that are out of reach.
I have also installed these on a commercial passenger vessel which used to several incandescent bulbs burning out every week. Because the CFLs have no filament to rattle, vibration does not affect them. I have even installed them in an engine room.
I have tried a few of the LED bulbs at a display and I am very impressed with the results, I believe within 2 years we will be paying $15.00 for a 5 pack, just like with pay for CFLs today.
Next on the horizon, organic LED light bulbs which may project a TV image on your ceiling or floor. That is what I would like to see next. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>> build your own LED bulbs :) www.besthongkong.com
Yay! Everybody loves playing 120v/240v AC mains power! If you want to kill yourself over a lightbulb, be my guest. But I warn you, 24 $1 LEDs + a 120/240V transformer cost about the same amount as buying the whole package. - Scott_T, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gee, these look like the same bulbs at computer geeks for $6, quite a savings http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=18-LED-CLR&cpc=SCH&srm=0
- AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is just a c2c add for ccrane. led bulbs wont replace good lighting an ccrane just resales junk at high prices. sorry george its true
- eeaarrgh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A bit more meat in this article:
http://www.machinedesign.com/ASP/viewSelectedArticle.asp?strArticleId=59140&strSite=MDSite&Screen=CURRENTISSUE&CatID=3 - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah those are the same bulbs. any coast to coast listener that has delt wit ccrane knows that they just buy cheap stuff from japan make comercials that make it sound like no one else has it, and not to mention they sale it for 5x as much allot of the time. the only people ccrane get buisness from are the gulable that dont compair prices
- Ruffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've currently replaced all my bulbs with GE Edison and Reveal Bulbs and Philips Natural Light Bulb.
Edison being the highest quality. They throw off light like no other.
The spiral CFL's last longer but the cheap ones throw off horrid light. I couldnt take it anymore. Ugly lighting all over the place.
Heres a picture of a 40watt Reveal Bulb and a standard incandesant. The Reveal is on the right.

screw led bulbs, custom led lighting baby - Lighthouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when are they going to make CFLs or LED bulbs in a 3-way configuration? i love 3-way bulbs. a 45-watt equivalent bulb is good for little more than preventing you from bumping into stuff or maybe to light a path outside. Hardly useful for indoors though. how bright are those 1.3 watt bulbs adv'd at geeks.com. the ad doesn't say.
- phidong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool article. I have a LED flashlight (about the size of the smaller 2AA maglite) and it's incredibly bring, maybe too bright. Having LEDs that run off AC power would be pretty cool. I prefer the white light to the orange warm light.
- DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been replacing all burned out bulbs in my house for the past 5 or 6 years with CFL's, so now I am almost at 100% CFL usage in the house. When they start to burn out and need replaced in a few years, hopefully the LED technology will be cheap enough to swap out the CFL's. There are a few places where you cannot use CFL's though, like on an electronic dimmer (old dimmers work with "dimmable" CFL's, but save no electricity when dimmed, due to the dimmer eating up the unused wattage). I wonder if the LED bulb has the same limitation?
- diggbrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My company has been doing this for years with Fountains... Never once has the thought crossed my mind that this would be awesome in other applications. I'll digg... and remain poor.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LED bulbs are the worst. Especially the LED flashlights. Not very bright at all.
- pickupman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's interesting to hear people's perception on low energy bulbs in residential applications. I own a lighting store, and handle bulbs purchasing. I well up on the specs, but even I am not sold on CFL's. Light output should be compared in lumens and not wattage. That's why they have both of them. Our standard household bulbs that sells for $.49 runs at 130v instead of 120v, and are rated for 6,000 hours. Spending $35.00 on a bulb that may last 100 times longer doesn't make alot of sense. Also, there is alot of savings on using them either, when it's a matter of 20 bulbs in your house. In commerical applications when you have hundreds of bulbs, the TCO of CFL's or LED's becomes a better option.
- jkdrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LEDs are pretty good for Low level light and accents lights and some flashlights. In fact I prefer them. Still needs work to become main source of light.
I use LED lights now for Red tower light beacons. But they are not bright enough to be used for daytime strobes. They are expensive but they last forever and decrease tower loading. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Do you ride a horse to work? Still churning your own butter?"
Yep. I also make my own lightbulbs. - globalmarketing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Recommended China LED Related Products Manufacturer

- highpower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those who want to DIY remember that LEDs need to use a resistor. For example, for a blue LED and a 12VDC battery you have to use a resistor of aproximatelly 470 ohm. The resistor values depends on the kind and color of the LEDs and the power source voltage. Here you can find an easy software that calculates the resistor value as well as the power consumption for different LED configurations: http://www.ledsinternational.com/downloads.htm
