- jtorkbob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+55To satisfy your curiosity, the site is 'Club Penguin', where "More than 700,000 users now pay $5.95 a month to customize penguin characters and then chat and play games with other 'penguins.'"
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+45Is this some kind of subliminal Linux propaganda aimed at kids?
- shagg187, on 10/10/2007, -4/+41For a moment, i read "Kite Sold for $350 Million"...
Are you human?
Of course I'm Human. Tired though. - wesamel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37my little brother and sister play this when they're not playing runescape *shudders*
- mannymix03, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24how hard would it be to specify WHICH kids site in the title. I mean look:
BREAKING: Club Penguin sold for $350 million AMAZING
oh wait... - Archon810, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20I myself thought that a kid sold a site at first.
- tnatharik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21My 6 year old cousin plays that game.
- thefirelane, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Then Disney got a bargain…
700k * 5.95 a month = ~$50 million per year
350/50 = 7
Compared to most investments, a PE of 7 isn’t too bad. - fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Like any of us are going to know what Club Penguin is
oh wait... - robmcm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I read that as, Kid's site... I was starting to feel like giving up!
- SteveNojobs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I think all the dot com moguls live in British Columbia.
You have the likes of Kevin Lam, the biggest domainer and his $600 million empire, Markus of plentyoffish.com and his $10,000 per day dating site and now this guy. - Yang1205, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10That's weird i read the exact same thing. But i thought it was a mix of tired / i just got done reading The Kite Runner
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Am I the only one who thought that they were going to read an article about a website made by some kids that sold for $350 million?
- dezmo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8i played that game a couple months ago and I know I wasn't the only adult on there because some dude kept beating me at 4 in a row!
- santaliqueur, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7SO WEIRD! I misread it as...
wait, I didn't misread it. I think I was the only one. - Calypsoaf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Gaia = Filled with teenagers trying to cyber each other.
boombang = ???
haboo = Frequently invaded by the next group of people, making it not to safe of a place for kids.
4chan = The ***** of the internet, you are sure to lose your soul here.
Yeah, sounds like great places for my kids. - Napalmtrees, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I read it that way as well.
In any case, am I the only one who has never heard of this site before?
Then again, I suppose I'm not the target demographic. - topiKal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Well, now with this community backing them, it'll be very easy for Disney to use children's feedback for the next 37 CG penguin movies.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I somehow read it as skateboard. I need to stop staying up so late.
- AdamTReineke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Techcrunch did a writeup on this. http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/08/01/disney-acquires-club-penguin/
From TC's company profile (http://www.crunchbase.com/company/clubpenguin)
Club Penguin is an online virtual world and one of the fastest growing sites aimed at children between 6 and 14. Launched less than 2 years ago in October of 2005, ClubPenguin has not only become profitable but expects to make $35 million in profit off revenues of $65 million in 2007. It was acquired by Disney on August 1, 2007 for $350 million in cash with an opportunity for an additional $350 million cash earn out by 2009. It will shortly be rebranded “Disney’s Club Penguin”.
The virtual world claims a usership of 700,000 paid subscribers with over 5 million visitors a month. Subscriptions are $6 monthly but may change after the Disney acquisition is completed. - ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Because we all know Linux invented penguins.
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I got you all beat. I read it as: "Kids sold for $350 million."
And then saw Disney in the description, and actually believed it. - ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They obviously want to have many more users, all of them paying more for Disney products that will be advertised and sold there.
- Ryosen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There is no advertisements on Club Penguin. More than likely, they want the user base so that they can integrate them with Virtual Magic Kingdom.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The Disney channel hardly has any ads, at least not during "Playhouse Disney" in the mornings. They'll occasionally have a McDonalds or Chuck E. Cheese spot, though.
BTW, my 3.5 year old is very proficient with the computer, and he often prefers using the Disney/Noggin/Nickelodeon websites to watching the tv channels. - fussbucket, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4There is no chatting on Club Penguin for the younger users. Everything is communicated through icons and the exchange of gifts. Allows parents to let their kids "chat" without worrying about any predators. My 5 year old niece made me play it with her before. The games available for the penguins to partake in are as entertaining as poor to mediocre flash games.
- ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Because WOW invented a subscription.. ***** some people are stupid.
- CasadeMike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3and my dad can beat up your dad...thanks for the update on Silicon Valley.
- JoeBlotto, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Comment buried for inaccuracy. Children are not smart. Please refrain from believing so in the future.
- mapkinase, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2We are all dumd.
- saigumi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My first thought was "Holy Crap! $350 Mill for a site that runs some bunk flash games."
Still, my 6 year old spends so much time on Nick.com and Cartoonnetwork.com playing repetitive and low complexity flash games all the time. One is a transformers one that you go up and down to collect stuff and that is all. I was bored watching after a minute.
Still, he's been a great help getting all the trophys, as he calls them, in Lego Star Wars 2 for the 360 and has beat Halo solo on easy mode. His summer has revolved. Last night, he was playing Spectrobes on the DS during loading screens on the 360 game we were playing. Talk about video game addiction. - mapkinase, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Linux is an operating s-y-s-t-e-m. It cannot invent anything. Larry Ewing invented penguins!
http://www.babytux.org/abouttux.php#q4 - jackkerouac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Mine too.
- ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -0/+113-14-y olds dressing penguins? ...
- l2OI3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Haha, same here.
- DinX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What do Beach Boys lyrics have to do with it ?
- genckas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It is interesting that they are setting a target for the acquisition :) quite different from 2k.
- zarex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My daughter, and her friends, love that site. Seems OK to me.
- TangentThought, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I've heard of all the sites you've listed except for one. What the hell is boombang?
- mapkinase, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's Friday now. Relief is on its way.
- peppino, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Wow! "Penguin Club" is addictive! I played, for free, for a couple of hours. Now I'm going to get my Mom to buy me a membership.
- duck_oil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The E in PE is earnings. $50 mil/year is revenue, not earnings.
- WarMace, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I read it as KDE Site. Its 8AM and im at work
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1don't you mean whales
- B1shop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Miniclip.com hit it big.
Another example of a good idea blowing up. - flxstr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dammit! What the hell was I doing moving to Vancouver from Kelowna!!!!!!!!!! They were in the freaking building next door, yet you wouldn't even know.
- mentalstate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2talk about bad parenting
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1actully from what I understand the game its self is free to play
it just requires a subscription to get certain items - Sawta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Media companies like Disney and Viacom, the owner of Nickelodeon, are being forced to rethink how they reach young people, who often do not see television as the door to the world of movies, toys and video games."
Maybe they don't think of television that way anymore, because they have to wait too damn long in between comercials to keep their attention...? I haven't watched the disney channel in a year or two, so I don't know how bad it's gotten, but it seems like theres more and more every day. - Rancoras, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The article says "up to" $350 million. The title is inaccurate.
