Kevin Rose & Pownce Get Pwned by Uncov
uncov.com — There's no way I could sleep tonight without ripping into Pownce. The only thing that really irritates me about Pownce is that it has to exist on the same internet that I use. Pownce is a web service that lets you "share stuff with your friends". Remember FTP? From 1971? Now it has pastel colors, and it's invite-only. (paraphrased from article)

- ElvisLives, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2I agree. Regardless of the merits of his points, he comes off sounding like Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. "Worst web app...ever."

- EvolvedAnt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20How is Pownce different than messages and file sharing through free email, or a forum?
Honestly, this website is the pinnacle of bandwagon jumping with complete disregard for common sense reminiscent to the kind we had right before the dot com bust.- Dunnix, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1"How is Pownce different than messages and file sharing through free email, or a forum?"
ummm the fact that it isnt a email or forum. Its a social networking site, its going to be one of the better ones. So quit jumping on the "Hate the popular stuff" bandwagon and actually look at what it provides. I don't know any other social network that provides file sharing and a desktop app.

- smackywentz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Speaking of latency, since this new comment system came on board, so did all this ***** new Javascript, it takes me for ***** ever to get on. I use an EVDO modem, call me n00b. For reals though, consider a broader audience please.

- rekcam18, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0People only dugg it because its full of anger and sounds funny. It has no point. It's pure stupidity and it's nothing more than a bunch of stupid, biased and subjective comments. The service wasn't even reviewed. Comments like this about anything would be dugg, because they sound funny.

- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36I'm amazed that people still belive Kevin and his ***** about being poor.
- Dunnix, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1When did he say he was poor. Jealous much?
- Tiak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2He didn't say he was poor, he said he needed cash donations for alcohol to drink in front of a camera... There's something about "I need random strangers to donate, or I can't afford alcohol once a week" that implies being poor.
- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2In the episode of diggnation where they talk about the BusinessWeek article. Kevin mentions having to "save up for a couch" and "doesnt even have thousands of dollars"

- LakeshoreBaby, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2That sixty million ain't gonna be worth ***** with the coming economic depression. I hope for his sake Digg is a private company, because Digg stock would be "Pownced" on and bought up quick at bottom dollar prices after the next engineered crash.
- shamess, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5He doesn't need money for beer. People were sending beer in, and he was like "dude, we can't handle all this beer being sent to us, just send us the money instead. Thanks." It's cheaper for everyone that way and Alex can get into his fridge.
- ate50eggs, on 10/11/2007, -12/+134Love the comment below:

*Raspberry*- msgyrd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Threaded comments are a welcome addition, but this implementation blows because now only top level posts are visible unless you click through to see them all...making the whole practice of threading comments almost worthless. - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4You can now change a global setting to see all. Click the - wait for it! - Global Settings button on any comment page.
- EvolvedAnt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes, but even so, the design is all over the place when everything is opened. I can't tell who is replying to who, or who I am replying to, without having to scroll up and down to see where lines and boxes connect, furthermore it becomes a scavenger hunt to find which button I need to click to respond to the original poster when he has multiple threaded responses already.

- walt100, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I was thinking the same thing. First time I've heard of the site. Haven't spent much time there, but all I've gathered so far is that they think everyone else sucks. I've seen this movie before. I've got a feeling the plot description includes one or more of "disgruntled," "turned down," or "former employee." There's ALWAYS a backstory.
One thing you can count on if you're on top: someone will think you suck. Happens all over the web, even in little groups of niche sites.

- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -11/+32Like I have mentioned time and time again since the announcement of Pounce... Adobe paid them $$$ to use AIR... Which is competing with Microsoft's Silverlight... Both are the same, but one difference, Adobe Air is backwards to Silverlight and AIR is slower at installing, not to mention AIR is not cross compatible with Photo-shop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver.
Microsoft's Expressions is made using Silverlight, completely compatible and able to create everything within that suite. But of course I dislike both because their meant for Desktop applications.
There is more to Silverlight a lot more than I can explain... XAML > *- kkeith02, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Silverlight you say? never heard of it.
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Another Runtime Desktop installer. Waste of time for Web2.0 applications, more for what my business intends to do with it, which is enrollment, demographics, and other desktop app things.
What they did with pounce is just wrong.
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Another Runtime Desktop installer. Waste of time for Web2.0 applications, more for what my business intends to do with it, which is enrollment, demographics, and other desktop app things.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I too like Silverlight more but I also like desktop applications sometimes. I mean you look at YIM in a browser and the application itself and there's a noticable difference in reliability. And eventually you have to expect AIR to work with the rest of Adobe's programs, hell they got Flash integrated and that wasn't even their's until recently.
- max777, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2What the hell are you talking about, air installs via flash, no activex, no page refresh, will work for 98% of internet users on any browser which supports flash. Silverlight failed to install several times for me in true microsoft activex fashion. You will also find if you look! plugins for Dreamweaver, Flash, Flex to export AIR applications, as for photoshop, you dont build apps in photoshop! In the same way you dont build apps in expression blend, you export a C# or w/e project from it. I do agree that silverlight has more to it but you cant have a go at AIR for intergration and potential ubiquity / ease of install. And never forget, THESE ARE BETAS!
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Probably Adobe paid $$$ for them to use AIR. (Remember Digg competition, Diggnation Apollo preview?)
I don't think AIR will be the base of internet-application development in the future.
Maybe Silverlight will have the upper hand, just because of its support for .NET languages.
Being said that, both are in their early stages and only time will tell.
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Probably Adobe paid $$$ for them to use AIR. (Remember Digg competition, Diggnation Apollo preview?)
- anonym41414, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9"Adobe Air is backwards to Silverlight"

- jccalhoun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"Adobe paid them $$$ to use AIR"
Do you have any evidence of that or is it just unfounded rumor mongering?
- kkeith02, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Silverlight you say? never heard of it.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -14/+62Damn, you guys switch loyalties awfully fast.
- SkaAgent11, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21Loyalties, are you ***** kidding me? Is there really that kind of cult of personality on digg that demands loyalty? Some of us just understand how much of a joke Web 2.0 is.
- PeteyBugs, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10Really? How much of a joke Web 2.0 is?
It seems to me that the only thing trendier than making a "Web 2.0" site is decrying web 2.0. I just wish I could count myself as one of the elite few that truly "understand".
Also - people have made billions off of the joke that is web 2.0. I hate the flood of "user powered because that's what's cool" sites as much as the next guy, but lumping all of web 2.0 together in the same poor insult? Come on.- SkaAgent11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Web 2.0 is a joke because there is no democratization of culture that has come from Web 2.0 like they promoted. In fact, far from it. There is a monolithic nerd culture built from Web 2.0 that is cheap and unsatisfying. Web 2.0 is a joke for the same reasons that every other post on digg is about Ron Paul, legalization of marijuana, and promotion of the iPhone. The problem is that in the age of information, web 2.0 promotes information overload...and thus instead of having diverse viewpoints, to make the internet managable people develop one, unified, boring nerd counterculture perspective that is recycled and regurgitated over and over on every web 2.0 site. This is reinforced further by the social networking aspect of web 2.0. I'm not one of those ignorant ***** who complains about the candy coated buttons and AJAX-ified dynamic pages...I could give less a *****. My complaint is that with web 2.0, the opitome of art on the internet will always be lolcats and political discourse will be limited to how far you can suck Ron Paul's dick. How's that for a poor insult you ***** dick?
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Web 2.0 is a joke? While the term may be stupid the websites that have applied its concepts are not.
Like, the site you're on, right now.
- PeteyBugs, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10Really? How much of a joke Web 2.0 is?
- msgyrd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Didn't know I had to be loyal. I come here because it provides decent content reliably. Pownce provides nothing useful, and is executed in a poor manner.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Even I dugg you up for that one. At this point it has been executed poorly and is simply a mash of other services.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5What I meant was you people who hate Kevin are always in the shadows on Digg (can't say I blame you) and the KRose supporters just aren't showing up.
OR
It takes only one application that you haven't even tried before you immediately change opinions on the guy. Reviews say Pownce is generally good but not this OMG PEACE OF SH!t!!1!!" that all of you are making it out to be.
Either use it or don't, but don't bitch about something you haven't even used for yourself yet. - appleswitch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Digg doesn't like Digg, Digg HATES Digg, It's just obsesed with Digg. This is what most people fail to notice.
Look at all the dugg articles making fun of digg, the comments are filled with people insulting Digg. The users, the design the code, and the lack of intelligence they believe all three have.
It's the same with Apple. Digg doesn't like Apple, Digg HATES Apple, It's just obsesed with Apple.
Go to any iPhone article, what is the public saying outside of digg? "OMFG iPhone is amazing" What does Digg say? "Battery life sucks. EDGE sucks. Overpriced. Scratches too easily." Now this doesn't mean they don't read about it every 5 seconds, their obsessed, they just hate it.
Nowhere else on the net will you find such target and researched bashing of both Digg and Apple, than Digg -- and nowhere else will you real SO MUCH about both.- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I'm more inclined to think that people who like the products digg them but the vocal minority who overreacts ("OMG another PS3 bashing article STFU!!1") posts in the comments. The happy diggers just do their thing and go on their way but the haters seem to have no other choice than to simply troll and bash.

- Hardcase, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12When your only claim to geek fame is conning enough people into paying for advertising space on your Mac, you'd better have something else going for you. But she's not really hot. She's OK.
- nitrousconsumed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@sock
that's prob. the most scientific reasoning i've ever heard to justify this app. im totally in accordance.

- Danjamin, on 10/11/2007, -19/+60The guy may be right about pownce, but he sure comes off as an obnoxious ***** in that article.
- duke3k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16And you sir have stumbled upon the obvious!

- evilseth, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18he poses a valid point, why not Java? SRSLY.
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Adobe can Pay well I guess.
- TheNik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why just not make a desktop app? Damn, if you have to use Java or something as virtually unknown as AIR (as a matter of fact, I still thought it was called Atlas or *****), just don't use anything.
- zcreem, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Because Java is a grown up language which requires real programming skill to use properly, most script kiddies don't have the patience to learn it or use it properly.
- muikano, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1wow. elitism much. programming language should be easy. That's the whole point. Why should code be structured to bend to the strengths of the hardware? Code is still two levels of abstraction away from REAL machine code. If you care about programming at all, you'd want languages to be easy. You'd want everyone to be able to code or experience the value of being able to command computers to do YOUR bidding, instead of the other way around.
Why do you think Ruby and Python are so popular? The whole concept of the new wave languages is to be consistent, to use real world semantics, and fast rampup. Now let's see if AIR can be the heir apparent to such thinking. Imagine being able to control hardware using easy to use scripts. Point of sale, hardware assembly all controlled with a Flash interface. Think of the money businesses can save. It'll free up the 1st tier coders to do things they love, like jetpacks.
You may love Java. But Java is not the easiest tool to glom onto. Like Microsoft, companies use java cuz it's got Javapos, or it's a one stop shop to get offline/online applications. Doesn't mean the language isn't fundamentally bonkers to read.

"Did you mean: Ponce "
Just saying. - RobbieS, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32That was pretty funny. Not gonna lie. I guess I'm an Uncov fan now...
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I've posted many Uncov items, just not as grabbing as this because it has something to do with an application by Kevin. Must be a digg thing.
- beerbarron, on 10/11/2007, -15/+3I don't understand why people bash something that takes skill to create, I also don't see any of you guys out there creating web 2.0 app's. Its like people that complain about politics but don't vote....
- mrfloppy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9oh vomit.
any monkey with an internet connection and enough time can learn to build web n.0 flash-in-the-pans
did it ever cross your little mind that some of us do create these things, and thus by your logic do have the right to critique others?- beerbarron, on 10/11/2007, -7/+0I have every right to comment ha. And not every monkey with an internet connection does have either A enough time or B the knowledge or C wants to. And yet people still manage to bash someone who's trying to provide a service. Like Enendar said "if you don't like the product then just say that"
- mrfloppy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"if you don't like the product then just say that"

***** you guys, if you don't like the product then say just that, don't ***** attack him personally as if he killed your grandma! Specially on his site. Worst part is he lets you ***** heads actually do it because he cares more about freedom of speech then these stupid personal attacks.- SilentRamble42, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I have yet to see a personal attack... plenty of saying Pownce sucks. I dont know what Digg youre on.

Damn, now that was a good Desktop application. - MoonDogAFO, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Good app!
- theclab, on 10/11/2007, -15/+7Lets all jump off the Kevin Rose bandwagon and jump on this Uncov guy's. He makes assholes look cool and I'm sure his web 2.0 app is going to be the best thing ever.
- walt100, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1What's the over/under on the number of days before a blog starts up with in-depth posts on how lame this Uncov is? It's a tough call. On one hand, the nature of the Internet is that, eventually, someone will try to steal your thunder by explaining how you, despite being on top, actually suck. One the other hand, someone would have to actually have heard of your site, which keeps the odds that anyone would care about your thunder relatively low.
These web sites are a dime a dozen.

- revoked, on 10/11/2007, -16/+6wow this guy is a dork. buried because I don't like haters.
- darkhero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4No you just a Kevin Rose fanboy.
- walt100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Pretty narrow-minded (and a bit egotistical) to think that if someone finds the rant stupid ("pay attention to me, I'm angry!"), they must be therefore be in love with the target of the rant. I could care less about Kevin Rose one way or the other. But I don't need to have an opinion on Rose to find the blog post at best, a lame attempt at generating site traffic, or at the least, someone looking for his 15 minutes.
I hate the Yankees, but it doesn't mean I'm a Red Sox fanboy.

- Claw787, on 10/14/2007, -3/+2I dugg down your comment because I don't like fanboys.
- darkhero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4No you just a Kevin Rose fanboy.
- viktro, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23Its funny to see all the kevin rose nutriders get up and arms because someone dare question something he did. This pownce ***** is facebook with a useless fire sharing system.
- beerbarron, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Lets face it bud, the only reason why people are dissing it to start off is because he's kevin rose. omg he created a web 2.0 product pounce him!! omg it sucks so bad because its in beta and you have to pay 10 dollars? I bet you guys spend 10 dollars or more on a mc donalds or junk food... seriously guys grow up and respect people that at least try!
- Duhitsmichael, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"seriously guys grow up and respect people that at least try!"
You can only say that about someone providing a non-profit service. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4There are a lot of people out there who won't even pay $10-$15 for an MMOG. Who could possibly delude themselves into believing that ANYONE would pay $10 for a glorified IM app?
Pownce is marketing gimmick. Adobe wants to promote AIR, and they paid Kevin to use his Internet celebrity status to do it...- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually it was mostly Leah.
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"he only reason why people are dissing it to start off is because he's kevin rose"
Did you stop to wipe Kevin's sperm off your face to think that maybe people are dissing it because it's just lame?
- Duhitsmichael, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"seriously guys grow up and respect people that at least try!"
- nateslost, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0You mean 'up in arms'?
Someone has a 2.0 start-up and it has to be total crap because people support Kevin Rose?
You are on Digg. So stop riding the nuts and use reddit.
Useless file sharing? Just like myspace is useless and facebook and ...
Its called 2.0 for a reason jackass.

- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It is the law of gaming come down on the world of Web2.0
- blackjack75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, he "fixed" The Broken. Forever.
- darkhero, on 10/11/2007, -28/+22***** Kevin Rose!
- zcreem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As long as you both over the legal age fill you're boots, he might not fancy you though, just a thought.
- SunathAlgeraan, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2It does seem *****, but I'll withhold final judgment until I give it a try. I don't see the need for the personal attacks, regardless. If it's a crap product, fine, flame the product, but Kevin Rose has had success before (ie the website we're all using right now), so it's unfair to flame him. I'm no fanboy, but that's just wrong no matter what color you paint it.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It's funny that they're digging you down because you're using logic. Why bash something you haven't even tried yet?
- TheCount, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30What I find funny is that when you hear Kevin's friends talk about Pownce, they simply describe what it does and stop at that. They never commit to liking it, or thinking it'll do well, cause they don't want to hurt his feelings. Like on Diggnation, apparently Kevin had showed it to Alex and asked him "on air" if he'd use it, and Alex hesitates for a second before saying "Sure", but doesn't elaborate and Alex has an opinion on everything.
- SilentRamble42, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24I thought that was weird too. Alex has a minimum 5 minute long opinion.
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12This is where friendships end... Alex "All aboard the Failboat!"
- cassarani, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yeah, it seemed like he didn't really use that service at all (and quite frankly thought it was *****) but couldn't tell it, so he quickly decided that maybe he'd better fake it... "Sure!".
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I also noticed that when he didn't use the term "Super excited"
- manicleek, on 10/11/2007, -6/+35I'm getting tired of telling my 7 year old daughter that "pwned" is how ***** spell owned
- jccalhoun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1You have to tell that to your 7 year old more than once? You might want to think about taking her to a doctor because she seems to have some learning disabilities.
- Mabu, on 10/11/2007, -8/+15He makes fun of people who comment out code? What a wanker.
- beerbarron, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0I really highly doubt that was him....
- claytorris, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8He was referring to useless comments in production code, fta:
"Who cares? Everyone who uses our service has a cable modem. Yeah, I'm a latency crank. Blow me. Amateurs."
I believe that last part was for you, wanker.
- crazyryan, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3"don't make me sign up for ***** Paypal to use your lame ass web service"
you dont need a paypal account to make payments using it, you can do it without registering - bairy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16Am I the only one who keeps wanting to call it 'ponce' ?
- sourcemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Google does too so you're not alone.
- niagara3400, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You often run into people that are diehard Chevy, Ford or Dodge owners that wouldn’t think their beloved company of choice could produce garbage. Then you have the smart ones who make their choices based on fact and value for money.
There seems to be a lot of Kevin Rose people here. - Rummey, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4I digg the story, don't get me wrong, but this guy is just pissed that he is on the "outside". Pownce is just another attempt at getting a webapp to stick and be popular. Megasomethingorother gets credit for trying.

First mistake, right there: actually looking at the site. -
