- wickedtribe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34The reason that I like Kevin is that he is willing to admit that "the search sucks". Open mind and open submittions and a more open API is what makes Digg stand out. Got to love it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I don't complain because I hate digg.I complain because I love it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26Damn this is getting ridiculous
- thedove, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15don't blame the site, blame yourself...IT IS YOUR JOB/RESPONSIBILITY to actually go in the upcoming section and report stories you don't like! you're just a complainer, you expect perfection on a user-controlled website when you're not CONTROLLING ANYTHING!
- thedove, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13okay, one more time...
"don't blame the site, blame yourself...IT IS YOUR JOB/RESPONSIBILITY to actually go in the upcoming section and report stories you don't like! you're just a complainer, you expect perfection on a user-controlled website when you're not CONTROLLING ANYTHING!" - thedove, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14man, here come the netscape shills
why is kevin entitled to spread the wealth of a site that he created and fronted with his own money? this is HIS project...go away if you want to be paid. GO...AWAY. oh wait, you can't b/c you're a troll from netscape. - thedove, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12man, flare, are you paid to be a troll?
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@thedove
I assume that the VCs that fronted the millions for this site and who are paying most (al?) of it's current expenses would disagree that it was all kevin's money. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I agree.
Once you start paying the people, they are no longer just users of the site. They are employees. Might as well just make them editors. - SrLnclt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7its not the netscape/digg thing that got me here, its the API news
- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14Only motivation: interesting to somebody. My ASS. Digg will be riddled with spam as long as there is money to be made. Paying the editors a salary rather guarantees they're not as easy to bribe.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9o rly?
(please tell me your kidding)
:P - UrbanSoldier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Paying the editors a salary rather guarantees they're not as easy to bribe."
No, paying the editors a salary doesn't guarantee anything, because everything is still subject to their personal opinions and influences. - mike503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cheers for standing up for himself.
netscape's been around forever, digg started out of nothing. that gives me hope.
also, about his comments...
"that's web 2.0, bitch!" - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I like dig just the way it is.
Ya it's not perfect but it's better than a lot of the news linking sites out there.
As for this site bathing in cash.
I'm sure that the place that's making the lion share of any moneys made on this site
at this point is being eaten up by there host.
It's got to cost a fortune to run a site like this.
If you really want to get paid for posing a link and ripping copy from another site.
Go to AOL...er Netscape there offering "cash" so far that has not made there site
a go to hot spot. - diggfuhq, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I like the fact that they are so open about everything, they know there are problems and they are open about it, and at the same time actively trying to make everything as fair to everyone as it can be. But no matter the situation not everyone can be happy. So to the people that complain every chance they get: www.netscape.com enjoy! (I wonder how Netscape's algorithm compares...ha!)
- Guitar3dt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Friendsterfication"
I like that. Pretty soon it's going to be "Myspaceification" if they stay as "quick & reliable" as they are... - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good for digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@mrfoos:
Is that a quote from Deadwood? - miggie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys are fighting to get a story on the front page if you guys ever got paid it would be ten times as bad because your fighting over money. You would just digg down other people's stories. The fights would be worst than they are now.
- c413, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3kevin rose never should have said that he had anything to do with this site. just a user
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Kevin nor Calacanis couldn't pay me enough to post to their site, I like social boomarking but if I have to submit a X amount of stories fo that paycheck the no, it wouldn't be enjoyable, offer me 10,000 i'll still say no.
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6The picture of Kevin reminds me of something out of a movie. Him and the Digg team really are changing the way news is delivered.
- UrbanSoldier, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Newsflash, Kevin created this site and its users by definition use this site. Why wouldn't the users be interested in the creator's stories?
- SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That's just like telling people to stop sending you spam. Not going to happen. Filters need to be beefed up and the community needs to do their part as well. People want a quick way to make a buck and they'll exploit it by whatever means necessary.
- greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9That Kevin Rose guy looks kinda like that guy that useta be on Tech TV...
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6digg.com making money = OK
digg.com users/submitters making money = DOUBLE PLUS BAD - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4I find that Digg is going through growing pains. I will agree the algorithm needs to be tweaked. Maybe it should not be based on length of time a user has been on digg. It could be based on the results of comments. Someone who never comments would hold less clout than those who do. Also, the reaction of the comments could be measured, too. If, someone has well accepted comments from the community, they hold a higher ranking than a troll who is buried 2 millions thumbs down. Getting to the front page is great, but after that many users actually interact with that article and other Digg users. Why not use that environment to fertilize the next generation of articles.
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3dig.com isn't a news site, it is the site for the Disney Internet Group http://www.dig.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7As much as I hate it, f00xx0riz3er is 100% correct. The few people of good intentions will never be able to close the door on the monster of personal gain.
- iDealL, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Looks like you could have your ego stroked.
- babakshirazi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0
Why is Kevin Rose making any money from this? You idiots actually click on the Google Adwords on Digg?/ - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7What about the need to have one's ego stroked?
That appears to be a large motivation for some...
(*cough* p9s50W5k4GUD2c6 *cough*) - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Sorry wrong story. D--
- Nation, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Kevin need a publicists to advise him when to shut up.
The more he spouts off about business models, group dynamics, or motivation theory (mostly indirectly, not in those official terms) the more he seems dumb and/or cocky to me.
Most of the criticisms I have seen from him either can be applied to digg or is basically "paying people is bad".
I know that if someone provides you a good or service that you want them to continue to produce ... you should want them to make enough money to keep doing it. Otherwise they will move on to something else because it takes money to eat.
In this instance, the "top diggers" were doing something Kevin wanted them to do ... he was benefiting from what they did. Now, they can be earning money to do what they loved to do so much they would do it for free. Yeah, they might be "earning a living" off it, but I would take an extra $1,000 a month for what I already do normally, with just a couple tweaks.
In fact, if they receive more and can do the thing that you want them to do full time you win, because they can focus on what it is you want them to do and ... they should get better at it. Thus you receive a better good/service.
ah, whatever - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3For money... for ego... what differance does it make?
Hell, if they we're getting payed regardless then maybe there'd be less gaming of the system
No one should be under the illusion that the top submitters are doing it to spread news to the masses - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Please Digg users bury this Digg vs Netscape lame ***** drama.
- narkee, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Am I the only one tired of seeing so many front page articles about Digg?
My god, Digg is the most narcissistic site on the internet.
I don't come to Digg to read about Digg. - Flare, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4Get this one too... You know you want to digg down me... I'm only a mexican after all.
- babakshirazi, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Totally agree. How the hell can stories with very few Diggs ever make it to the front page?
Half of the articles link to spam articles just trying to make a Google Adwords buck. Unless Digg changes things up, this site won't last. - Flare, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1I am no troll.... I am Mexican. Can't you see the flag?
Oh, I +Digg your comment by the way ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Well now I know what to do to get a story onto the front page. Make sure the name Kevin Rose is in the title.
I used to really like this site. - Flare, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4You're asking the wrong crowd dude... these guys will always get behind their "god". I bet you they each have a picture of him on the back of their room doors. :D
- Flare, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2Er... no; I +Digg you, man :)
- Yorn, on 10/12/2007, -22/+5I agree. Case in point: How many of you /digg'd this before you clicked the link or bothered to read this comment?
- Flare, on 10/12/2007, -23/+3Some change... turns out newstories are still being controlled. We just switched from Editors to Gamers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -24/+3We Get It, Enough of the Fuking Kevin Rose Articles.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -29/+726 Diggs and on the front page already???
When is the algorithm going to be fixed??? - CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -27/+3fine, digg me down, but i'm gonna make you work for it. get this one too!
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -30/+34rd post!11
