- nights0223, on 01/12/2008, -5/+29Well, unlike Vista, if you don't like it, you can change it.
- liquidcable, on 01/12/2008, -2/+24Using it right now. It has many rough edges. I cant' really believe that 4.0 was released; it's really a beta or rc at best. I've been a KDE guy since I started using Linux in '98. I do agree that 4.1 will most likely be the release that really shines, and one that most people should wait on.
- abbathdoom, on 01/12/2008, -3/+24kDE4 has its own compositing effects out of the box.
- hungryduck, on 01/12/2008, -3/+23KDE > Vista
- Ouze, on 01/12/2008, -0/+18I'm glad they included Dolphin. I'm very fond of it.
How nicely does this play with Compiz Fusion? - schestowitz, on 01/12/2008, -5/+21FTA: "KDE users who require mission-critical robustness and the full feature set of the KDE 3.5.x series should probably wait until KDE 4.1 before making the transition..."
This is true and it's pretty much the same with Leopard and (arguably) Vista. Fortunately, KDE 3.5 is already a fantastic desktop and it's possible to run KDE 4.0.0 apps on it until 4.1 arrives later this year, based on one estimate. - andycr512, on 01/12/2008, -1/+17Right, an OS that can't do something as fundamental as copying a file at a reasonable speed is technologically superior to Linux.
2 of whatever you're smoking, please. - chingy1788, on 01/12/2008, -4/+19vista performs like *****
i have been let down by vista and my pc (athlon 4000+, 1.5GB ram 6800GT) playing TF2 on max... xp is noticeably faster
sigh - twoboxen, on 01/12/2008, -2/+17Keep trying to justify your $300 purchase...
- JohnFlux, on 01/12/2008, -0/+10Yes, you caught us, we closed bugs.kde.org because we don't want bug reports. How smart of you.
- rob3, on 01/12/2008, -0/+9I wish the digg report tool had an option asking "Is rockyh being a complete idiot?"
- chicken101, on 01/12/2008, -0/+9That's a laugh, we were doing that 10 years ago when the other guys were dicking around.
- Phocion55, on 01/12/2008, -3/+12One word: Customizable
- Phocion55, on 01/12/2008, -0/+8Linux is a kernel.
- thtroyer, on 01/12/2008, -0/+8Seriously?
If you need to run Windows programs, use Windows. Sometimes Wine works, but usually, it falls short.
That said, I don't need Windows, so I happily run Gentoo. :D - UKsHaDoW, on 01/12/2008, -0/+8Why are they digging you down? kwin 4 does have the effects out the box. Acatally i would not recommend compiz with kde 4
- burjzyntski, on 01/12/2008, -1/+8You design it.
- jhuebel, on 01/12/2008, -0/+7It's a x.0 release. When have x.0 releases (especially ones that involve a complete overhaul) ever been anything but beta quality? And why is it that so many digg users resort to name calling to try to get a point across?
On one hand, I congratulate the devs for having the discipline and vision to make such pervasive changes to KDE. On the other hand, I'll be waiting for KDE 4.1 (KDE 4.0 SP1? *grin*) before I make the move.
One last point, you can also use CTRL-L to focus the Location bar. The same binding works in Firefox, Konqueror, IE and Safari (Command-L on Mac OSX). - faraon3, on 01/12/2008, -1/+7Then its a good thing I prefer performance and stability over graphics, which is why I use Linux...
- hadak, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4Very profound.
- leamanc, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4Couldn't agree more. I love me some KDE, but will be sticking with 3.5.8 as my main environment for the time being. I'm looking forward to 4.1 (or even a 4.0.x release) that makes KDE4 more usable in everyday life. In the meantime, I'll be logging into it occasionally but not making the leap until it's more polished.
This is the big difference between KDE and Leopard/Vista...it's pretty easy to maintain both the old operating environment and the old one without the need for partitioning or a second hard drive. - Schpariel, on 01/12/2008, -1/+5WindowBlinds and DesktopX are commercial, and have a negative impact on performance, "shell hacks" would be more accurate as these are nowhere as good as Linux Window managers.
- jhuebel, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4Good comment. I've been trying to decide if I should move to KDE4 on my production box. Your fair, even-tempered comment has made me decide against it for now.
- darkNiGHTS, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4The people have spoken.
- kwilliam, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3A few things:
I don't think you've played enough with Dolphin if you think it is feature stripped. Sure, it lacks some features Konqueror has (tabs) but has several new, inovative features (column view, breadcrumb bar). It is not Konqueror File Manager Plus, it's KDE File Managing Re-thought.
Don't worry about the default K-Menu. It's just the default in 4.0 because the *multiple* alternatives (Raptor, Lancelot) aren't done yet. Plus, the original K-Menu is still available. Go to Add Widgets and drag the traditional launcher to the bar and remove the SUSE one if you want. (The SUSE menu seems to polarize people into loving it and hating it, which is weird.)
Regarding "full control and lots of options" I love that stuff too! A lot of programs were re-written from scratch for KDE 4.0, and thus the configuration dialogs have to be re-written too. That task is usually done after the program is mostly feature complete, and different applications reaced that stage sooner than others. For instance, Konsole has a really sweet configuration dialog in KDE4; the Plasma panel has absolutely none yet, because they barely finished the basics of Plasma in time for the 4.0 release. Rest assured that the number of configuration dialog options will grow with time, just like they did in KDE3.
Regarding "snappy-ness": Yeah, I noticed that too. Probably all those neat animations and composited window manager, I don't know. Qt 4.4 (which will be used in KDE 4.1) is supposed to be faster.
"It seems like this is going to be bad PR for KDE": You obviously haven't read the release announcements, reviews, etc. The KDE team has done it's best to make the world aware that KDE 4.0 does not have feature parity with KDE 3.5.8. (Despite those efforts, I reckon there will be many shocked and confused people, who remember the hype of the past year, and didn't get the anti-hype of the past few months.) If you need a sudden dose of "KDE 4.0 reality", read Aaron Seigo's (in)famous post "Talking Bluntly" (http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/talking-bluntly ...
I don't think the PR can be compared to Vista, because A) they know KDE 4.0 is rough - says so in all the reviews - whereas expectations were much higher for Microsoft Vista, and B) KDE 4.1 is supposedly coming out within 6 months, and solves the vast majority of complaints with KDE 4.0 (according to developer blogs), whereas no one expects another OS from Redmond for several years. Hopefully, enough damage control has been done so that the "It-doesn't-make-coffee-anymore!" backlash will not be so strong people won't try KDE 4.1 or 4.2 when they come out.
Lastly regarding Konqueror: Yeah, I was disappointed too. The file size view and tree views haven't been ported, and it doesn't seem like it has any new features, despite the cool ideas proposed on kde-look.org. Maybe it needs more developers. - RobotBuddha, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3I'd agree that the visual theme in kde 4.0 is much worse than that of vista. But seriously, on a technical level? I don't know how you can even compare programming in the new kde api, especially with qt 4.4 in beta testing now, to windows. You arguably get a cleaner and more elegant api than native in windows, the code will be crossplatform, and a compiled language is the primary target.
- djpearman, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3Firstly, let's compare apples with apples, not oranges. KDE is a desktop environment that can run on a variety of different kernels, of which Linux is just one, albeit the most widespread free software one. Therefore, claiming that Vista is technically superior to Linux based on looks is ridiculous, since a screenshot of KDE tells you nothing about the technology of the Linux kernel.
Secondly, in the free software world, a X.0.0 release of a software generally is the most incomplete and buggy release of such a series. Release early, release often - that's the motto. By releasing KDE 4.0, a wider audience has access to the desktop environment, leading to increased development and testing. Hence, this release in no way represents the fully tested and completed version of KDE4, it is just the first installment.
I, for one, will be installing it very soon - to test it. Most of the improvements are under the hood - the invisible stuff aimed at making development of KDE4 easier. As such, it comes as no surprise that it looks very similar to KDE3. However, if you just want to use KDE, stick with KDE 3.5 until a few iterations of KDE4 have passed. - jasutton, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3I'm not talking about the apps. I'm talking about the core desktop (desktop, panel, etc). The configuration dialogs have obvious features missing (as mentioned in my prior post). Also, as I remember it, an API freeze occured for KDE 4 in late October 2007, so that really shouldn't be the goal of the 4.0 release.
- jhuebel, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3Is KDE 4 feature incomplete? Or is it that KDE apps haven't been ported to KDE 4? It's important to remember that KOffice and the like are not part of the core K Desktop Environment. That's two different things. Just as it happened with W2K/XP and Mac OSX, it'll take a while for app developers to catch up. Now that KDE 4's API is frozen, apps that have heavy integration can complete their ports without chasing a moving target. I don't really see anything unusual about the path that KDE 4 is taking, personally.
- Purin, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3I've tested numerous effects with Compiz Fusion running under KDE 4, and they seemed to work fine, as long as you have the built in effects turned off.
- skywake, on 01/12/2008, -4/+7yes, but Vista doesn't have Dolphin or Amarok.
- CyberGlitch, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2Uhh, I have the same Alt-D problem in KDE 3.5, it's not just a 4.0 issue.
- Hollander1, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2On Debian Etch, installed straight from Debian experimental repositories, my overall thought is that it seems like a serious step back in overall usability. I like KDE because it gives me full control and lots of options but Dolphin and the new menu structure (SuSE style) are feature-stripped and lag snappy-ness. It seems like this is going to be bad PR for KDE, very much like the bad press during and post Vista release. Konqueror, from the experimental rep., does not impress either. Verdict: Wait if you expect a easy upgrade and/or need this on a production system.
- davodavo, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2I don't like that the new Konqueror's file managment mode is just Dolphin embedded as a KPart.
- jasutton, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2I can agree that x.0 releases are never of the same quality of later releases, but I still wouldn't call KDE 4.0 even "beta." The term implies that the major features have been implemented, and mostly bug-fixing needs to be done. KDE 4.0 is seriously feature incomplete, and that puts it in the category of what has traditionally been called "alpha" quality. Most users are disappointed in KDE 4.0 because by its very name (implying something more than an alpha quality release), they expect it to be at least as functional as KDE 3.5 is. When you can't change the size of the panel or the font size of the digital clock, some pretty major features are missing. :)
I'm not mad that KDE 4.0 turned out the way that it did, as I know this is a major step to a wonderful new product, but I wish that it had been labeled as such so that people might not have gotten their hopes up. :) - chapium, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2It just wouldn't be KDE without the beautiful svg gear/bomb graphic popping up every session.
- chingy1788, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2i like the looks of vista (over XP)
but i dont like the performance of Vista (over XP)
with hardware increasing its power every day, vista eventually will be able to use that power more efficiently than XP did (another digg user once pointed that out) - safaci2000, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2True enough, but the CD locking up while mounting isn't a KDE issue as much as an issue with SuSe or Kubuntu. If you don't even to X, you can't really blame KDE4 for that part. I haven't tried KDE4 yet but it looks very promising and considering what they're trying to accomplish with their Desktop platform, I'm willing to cut them a bit of slack.
- daviddiaz, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2The first release of vista was extremely buggy too. Hell, a year later it's still buggy.
I'm sure the KDE developers will have those little caviots ironed out in no time. for now just stick to 3.5 - Mr.Nibbles, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2Looks good, a few bugs though... but the core of it has paved the path for the future. The next release will make this much better, the lack of broad testing for such an environment on the Linux side handicaps its bug hunting and usability development a lot...
Instead of complaining, lets start sending in those bug reports and feature requests!
Thanks Siego, look forward to seeing how this develops
although i was always more of a gnome fan..... :S *insert shunning here* - Macskeeball, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2You said that you can't believe 4.0 was released. If so, why did you say it was an RC at best? RC stands for Release Candidate, and that means what it says. In other words, a release candidate is something that may indeed be the actual release.
- KhaaL, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1I find KDEs compositing sluggish and not half as pretty as CF
- chingy1788, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1I got Vista for free, through my Uni's MSDNAA service
but now i dont use it... cause of TF2 - RobotBuddha, on 01/12/2008, -1/+2One of the major features of kde4 is that it does run on windows.
- prashanthellina, on 01/13/2008, -1/+2I tried it on VirtualBox. I am a Gnome user but have used KDE before. Had abandoned it because I felt Gnome was more streamlined and simple. Was hoping KDE4 would solve some of these issues. I feel it is a step in the right direction. You can read more about my experience here (http://blog.prashanthellina.com/2008/01/13/kde4-on ...
- DAaaMan64, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah I agree. I have two screen and I don't see any feature to have a background that stretches across both. I also can't figure out how to edit the toolbar settings as I don't like widgets quite THAT much. But it's okay so far.
- Gogogo111, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1GTFO
- Sabretou, on 01/12/2008, -1/+2KDE is a DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT, NOT an OPERATING SYSTEM. Try and learn the difference.
- kwilliam, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Hey, at least now you know!
- mercurysquad, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1So, 3 years since you last used Linux, and you chose to break it with a KDE4 preview (I dont belive it's anything more than a preview), and that too a Live CD. No wonder.
Download Ubuntu gutsy and give it a try, you will be amazed how much things have changed since 2004/5. -
