- darkhero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Joost is starting to suck. Really the speeds have gotten every laggy and most of the time videos don't work ("video not available"). One time Joost's SSL expired and the whole program didn't work. How the hell do you forget that. Plus they are putting ads in middle of the videos. ***** it is like TV. Really what is so special. All i have to say is no FUTURE. Digg me down for telling the truth.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Here is why I like Joost: I don't have a problem with commercials(I don't like them, but 30 seconds is nothing), but what I want most of all is all of my content on demand, and as Joost gets more and more providers it will get better and better. Being able to watch what I want when I want is incredible(way better when its legal :))
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Still no PPC mac version. Still no Linux version. Still has VERY limited content.
: - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just recently got a chance to try Joost - sorry to tell you all, Joost is dead.
What Joost is:
* Not HD
* Very artifacty
* Has all the same content that a low-grade cable subscription will get you. Well, not quite all.
* Has region controls on channels (The "Global Anime Channel" is EU only, and ask EU users about National Geographic).
I could tolerate the artifact-filled video if more fundamental design choices were not broken. In particular it not being HD really bugs me, but far worse is the region control over content. I know Joost is trying to address a limted amount of content but the yway to do that properly is not to kowtow to every fantasy of B-grade TV stations and lock down video content to a specific locale.
I would far rather download a few targeted TV shows off ITMS (which has better quality BTW) than use Joost the way it is today, and I wuld never seek to use it again as long as it has region controls over channels. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I dugg you down because this is MORE JOOST SPAM.
What is the matter with Digg users in regard to these posts? Do you read these comments? It's pitiful; they read like the copy in asinine "slice of life" commercials where one friend is telling another about this new hemorrhoid cream he discovered, and then he pulls out a tube and holds it over his shoulder.
BURY THIS *****, or watch this site turn into nothing more than a dumping ground for paid spam postings. - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It's still a beta, what do you expect?
I'm sure the technical details of the program will be dealt with before going live. My biggest concern is content. I hope with these new advertisers comes much more new content as I'm close to seeing all of the stuff that is currently available that interests me (Comedy Central and National Geographic) so I need a reason to keep going back. - unitethenations, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Finally got an invite, but I can't use the thing because I'm on a ppc. Come on joost! Linux and mac people are waiting.
P.S how do I get a joost login without actually running the program? - Kronos6948, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lagging is a major issue right now, and I don't understand why...they're not sending over TV quality compression, and it looks to me as if it's just above YouTube compression. Lets hope that the ad revenue gets them the money they need get more bandwidth or improve their servers, or whatever it is they need to fix the problem.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+6At first when I used Joost I didn't like it because there was no good content. So I wasn't using it for a while, but then decided to again.
They have Stella from Comedy Central, so now I love it. I haven't noticed what else they have cause that's all I watched. I don't think the adds will be that bad. - schroeder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I really don't understand how so many people here want content without having to pay for it in some way. I have always been poor and hardly ever had cable so I always thought it was great to have free network television over the airwaves. Now television is getting out of had with more commercial breaks than ever and silly ads in the corner and bottom of the screen that bounce around and make obnoxious sounds. I understand why people hate commercials. But Joost is saying they will have a single 30 second ad per episode. That's far better than network television has ever been. I move around a lot and all I have is my laptop. I think it's great that I can watch tv anywhere for free. I could and do torrent but some times you just want to channel surf. I know I'll probably get buried but I'd rather sit through a 30 second commercial for free content than pay for cable.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg in hopes that Joost will improve with the new revenue. I rarely can find a show that isn't "unavailable." Or it plays for 5 min and then refuses to continue.
- orbanj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5hah just recieved the first email, no joke:
"Can I have one? Also good for filling up 5000 long entry of spam list :)
Me = Sucker, also, I believe in lottery!" - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"It's still a beta, what do you expect?"
What would I expect from a tech firm that is signing contracts with the largest companies in the world? Quite a lot actually. - nullcodes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I really hope they're working on getting History Channel, Discovery, The Military Channel, Animal Planet, and TLC. If they get those channels on board I'm signing up.
- leahculver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now if only they could get some better content providers...
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just as an addendum, I'd like to point out that living on ***** 512/256 also means I haveta wait on the video to finish downloading about halfway before I can watch it fully...if it dosen't tell me it's not available about 10 minutes in. The player gives me no information on how much has been downloaded, either.
Also, I am continuously annoyed at how the app has to be fullscreen to use widgets (which really aren't that special). So much for multitasking, it's like sitting in front a genuine TV set, getting irradiated by its moving pictures.
Maybe i'm expecting more out of a beta...like more programming. - dignon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm beta testing Joost as well and, unfortunately, it kinda sucks. Low grade picture quality, stuttering, and generally very poor content (most of which is available as podcasts which are in better quality and without the stuttering caused by streaming). Oh yeah, and television-style advertising. Great, TV ads on the Internet... I'm sure everyone's been waiting and hoping that finally they could suffer through more f'in television ads... I, however, am not one of them. I'm sure advertisers are drooling for an opportunity to continue their assault on our consciousness but I don't think that viewers are. Joost is kinda a cool idea, and probably woulda been great 5 years ago, but now its kinda lame. Personally, I think podcasting has Joost beat on every front and iTunes implementation of subscribing to shows and receiving them automatically, in high quality, and without commercials is head and shoulders above them.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have to set up a proxy, the design of the site is fundamentally broken. This is the Global Internet! Come on.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To the responders - the video quality is only a minor complaint, as is the available content - what is a HUGE deal to me is building in from the outset any notion of region limitations on content. I don't even mind ads!
As for HD, yes I want HD. Do I care if or how it is streamed? No I do not. I can wait five minutes or even an hour to watch programming in HD. Remmber it's all IP programming, so it's always there. Have some interlude programming that does stream while the HD feed is warming up. I don't care how I get it, I'm just saying a non-HD video feed is basically competing with Revver and YouTube, and in many cases I might prefer to go there. - darkhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know they have to make money. But 30sec ads are so tv. They could have the logo of the company on the side or something. Plus the content on Joost sucks right now. It is 2 year old MTV and 1980's National Geography.
- Duston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@superkendall (#6373184)
Let me get this straight, you want HD streamed on traditional broadband? Not all of us have Fiber to the Curb connections man. - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, now all they need is users and a technology that actually works.
- Mactard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great we have no content and we keep adding more ads.
Joost is an advertising experiment, get joost to it. - dogstylee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1May as well stick to torrenting and dailymotion. I'm not watching anything with ads, I don't give a **** how short the ad is, I don't want to see it, I don't *need* to see it. Whenever I watch TV and adverts come on - and I'm sure many of you do this too - I flip channel until I find something - anything - that isn't showing ads. Sometimes I end up going through about 20 channels withing 2 minutes to find something other than ads to watch.
- Spelvin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Content content content....
Also there has to be some way to setup a proxy to view content that is EU only...remember they did it for online gambling sites.
So I have tried Joost and I have tried NetFlix watchnow and the quality of the netflix on "basic" kills the majority of shows on Joost. How is this possible?
I like the idea of Joost, the bandwidth scares me since I am on one of those ISPs that will not tell you the amount of data I can actually move in a month before they kill my account, But I do like the idea. - GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow. All that good programming in the EU and they don't even have the balls to tell us about it.
Why am I even bothering with this crap anymore... - izzie2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1First off let me describe beta.Beta is a testing session.Potential advertisers or content providers surely aren't going to offer up their best shows for testing. They just want to see that it works.
Beta means they want the community to report bugs. This is not a release.
I also had major issues with Joost in the previous versions but the latest (9.04) rocks so far.(24 hrs straight so far). It's people who bitch and complain, having no idea what beta testing even means, that have made me hold on to my invites tighter.
Also the e-mail thing for the super secret beta testers only affected the idiots with no spam filters.Gmail anyone?
Joost has signed with Viacom(bet,MTV,comedy central, paramount pictures, dream works..etc etc)now CBS and who knows who else is jumping onboard.
The advertisers see it but if you don't then it's your loss. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0is a good story, but not all is ok -- another type of ads here - http://www.garantat.net/ads.htm
- stevejobs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Advertisers and 30 second spots? That isn't very web 2.0 of them.
- str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2lol well I'll let you all in on something very very stupid that Joost developers did. Within the beta they have a private section for special beta testers to discuss and help contribute to Joosts final development but they made the mistake of doing this through a listserv and this ended up with much confusion and several users (as usual) ended up replying to each message sent through the listserv thereby causing an avalanche of emails to be sent with each message (since all emails were being sent to the entire list serv). I think the problem is probably still going on now, but everyone who could either un-subscribed or filtered it to the trash. It was hilarious to see the steady stream of irrated Joost users and a lot of private information was flowing through like personal details with phone numbers, passwords and the likes.
- orbanj, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6I have three joost invites. The 5000th email I recieve asking for one will get them all. GO!
jerbearinmyhair@gmail.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2First of all "login" isn't a word. It's spelled like that on the command line, because commands don't have spaces in them.
Second, people are begging for SPAM?
Oh, please, meee meeeee! *****. Take your payola somewhere else. - junkalam, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1I dugg you down so nobody else sees the raffle link.
/kidding - pcbeast, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2another dupe, lovely....submitter, why don't you JUST DIGG THE ORIGINAL STORIES?
http://digg.com/tech_news/Joost_signs_major_advertisers_for_TV_over_Web_plan - cfaslave, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2I'm encouraged by the many deals Joost has been making recently. Content deals with the likes of CBS and advertising deals (less exciting) mean this thing is for real. I think it might be the one to beat in this space.
I'm giving away several Joost invites also. More on this here:
