- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+88Indeed. And it looks as if all the videos are back with their original post date, views and such. Somewhere deep inside Google there is a button labeled 'Colbert'. It is either on, or... Off.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+77Freakin sweet!
- Bronstone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53I'm not used to this kind of good will. Finally, a smart decision by the big wigs not to alienate fans. Kudos, YouTube and Viacom. Way to get the job done!
- greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40it seems the internet has won again.
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36remember back in the day when we were forecasting the end of you tube? That was way back at about 2:30 this afternoon- a friggin eternity in digg-time!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Where is the official press release?
Since when do no-name blogs announce Google-Viacom deals? - soll, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32At least the article his story linked to contained some actual information. The story linked here has absolutely no content except for this Pulitzer worthy line, "Viacom’s cooperation in allowing the content to be played on YouTube show’s the media company’s eagerness to capture audiences where they are (online) and to still profit from the viewing of their video content."
Already there's quite a few people wanting to know why this unknown blog is breaking it, and what the details are.
Bravo. - coldfusion055, on 10/12/2007, -13/+38You're not on the front page now, buddy. Don't cry about it.
- JesusFaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18So what are the details of the deal?
article is pretty light on any content beside what we see in the headline - tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18The 20th century just called. They want their lame "the ... just called, they want their ... back" back.
- nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22July/August called. They want their lame Tubes jokes back.

more news - logicnazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The catch would be full shows are no longer allowed. Only clips as the other story explained.
- dengzhi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7digg time does fly by fast.
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I was about to say that this is good news, but the truth is there is no news. Who said what, where, and why? No source? Huh? Who the hell is this blog, and how would they know this?
- NumberFour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What exactly did the deal entail? Did Viacom get anything from this, because I don't see them just letting YouTube show their content for free.
- logicnazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uhh I don't see how this works. These companies get a cut of the profit from views of THEIR videos not YouTube's total revenue. If you give each company 15% revenue from pages with copyrighted content then even if copyrighted videos were the only thing on youtube they lose at most 15% of revenue.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@logicnazi So only clips eh? I wonder if part1, 2, & 3 (typical southpark splits) will be considered clips... you can watch the whole thing, but only in pieces.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope other networks, current event type at least, follow this example; I mean, it makes sense.
- ZippidyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Good for them. I'm happy ^_^
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i smell a catch somewhere, it's a very cool thing that they're allowing stuff to be on youtube, but what's the catch?
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5your title should include, "COLB...VIA...YOUT....nvm, APPLE iPOD new Wii MUST READ SHOCKING BREAKTHROUGH iPhone iMovie"
- le0pard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Your title should have said "COLBERT IS BACK!!! Youtube, Viacom Reach an Agreement! LOOK" and it would have had many more hits than this one :)

"Has this sort of thing been happening to anyone else?"
Certainly not! This is a sure sign that you've been targetted by The Group. We're not exactly sure who The Group is. Some say it's a cooperative effort between the NSA and the Department of Homeland Security to realign the Internet to more favorable users. Others believe it's an extension of the Rosicrucians, who did recently vow to undermine the popularity of the Internet by subverting the efforts of users to provide content with their own bot army, thus demoralizing submitters in the hopes that they would give up. Then there is the Diggnoratti, the global secret society trying to control the flow of Digg Juice.
Try to think back. Have you pissed anybody off? Do you hear strange clicking noises when you pick up the phone? Have any strange cars shown up in your neighborhood? Does Internet Explorer just freeze up for no reason? - consonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Bronstone
Sorry, I just rewrote my comment, so that's why your post will look awkward to everyone else. You're not imagining things. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I know you are dumb enough to all be thinking that this means that random users wll now be able to post CC shows at will...but even if this unknown blog DID somehjow scoop all the real news sources, that is NOT oing to be the case.
You still will NOt be able to post clips of CC shows. THEY will do it.
It would make absolutely NO sense for them to allow people to do it if they are working on a deal. - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Nerd05
"The interesting thing about this is that all the other big corporations are going to start jumping on this licensing bandwagon, and pretty soon YouTube's profits are just going to sink. We'll see one of two scenarios: either pages with copyrighted licensed content are going to have a lot more ads to regain lost profits, or we'll get to the point where uploading a copyrighted video to YouTube "costs" them more than, say, one that you make yourself."
Ahh but you leave one factor out of your idea here:
You're assuming the user base and content levels will stay equal, meaning that YouTube is losing money that it would otherwise have.
If it's now legal to post Viacom IP like Colbert Report and Daily Show, you'll find two things: 1) More of it and because of that you'll have 2) More people going to find it there. That means, more advertising coming in, and more money for both companies. - TheFoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The catch would probably be, YouTube paying for the license?
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Anyone else feel like the Daily Show isn't as good as it used to be? Seems to have fallen off in the past 4 or 5 months.
- nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@JesusFaction,
Viacom probably gets a cut of the advertising $$$ earned from each view of a video containing their material. I think that's how they've been doing this with other companies.
The interesting thing about this is that all the other big corporations are going to start jumping on this licensing bandwagon, and pretty soon YouTube's profits are just going to sink. We'll see one of two scenarios: either pages with copyrighted licensed content are going to have a lot more ads to regain lost profits, or we'll get to the point where uploading a copyrighted video to YouTube "costs" them more than, say, one that you make yourself.
However this pans out, it looks like everyone will win. - Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3GOOD WILL? You nuts, it was a licensing deal that means MONEY!
- bbene, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Sorry, random blog != accurate news. Buried inaccurate.
- Kibitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I hear you. That's what I figured.
Don't get me wrong, I love Digg. I use it every day. It's just that when this sort of thing happens, it throws into question the way Digg functions. Maybe the sad but honest lesson is that it's better to use a flashy "OMG OMG OMG" headline than to submit earlier, better content. - bbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"How the hell does Digg work?"
After you submit your story you need to get your 40 close friends to digg it up. Thats how digg works. There are too many stories in the queue for ordinary people to find your story. Go 25 pages deep and you will see stories posted 2 hours ago. - lifesagame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you seen the commercial on Comedy Central promoting their site for Indecision episodes online. Says, "Now you don't have to get it one piece at a time from some crappy blog." Don't know why I brought it up but... well... there it is.
- sauron256, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Actually, he is. Two stories about this on the front page...
- Kibitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't get it. I submitted this story earlier, and from a better source, and it didn't make the front page. How the hell does Digg work?
- rekka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For the love of god, make it stop! ;)
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We'll have to see how this pans out. Right now, Google's placing its bets. It paid no-small amount of chump change to advertise on MySpace. Then it bought YouTube, and YouTube was no small-change either. With being on the board of Apple, it seems clear that Google is setting up residence where it thinks the action is. Less trying to compete, than position, and innovate. Go ubiquity!
- anachronaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I concur. It makes me wonder if they recently lost a writer or two. I've also noticed that Real Time with Bill Maher (a show I dearly love) seems to have lost some steam lately, with most of the comedy segments bombing painfully and the writing just not seeming as crisp.
- SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Cool beans! Hopefully this will be the first of many corporations acknowlegding and using new Internet technologies instead of shunning them (RIAA anyone?)
- jayscot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You little diggers love you some John Stewart...and Wii.
- tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is this in tech? Geez, you Stewart cool aid drinkers are pitiful.
- pr3998, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DIGG has groups that digg each other. so yes, you had no hope, and should not have tried, not expected. this is not news, its all over the net for you to google and learn.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please link to the article itself, not your blog about it.
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What are the odds? Yesterday I searched YouTube for the keyword "colbert" for no good reason, randomly played some videos and there were they. Seems that YouTube just put the videos away for a while expecting to reach an agreement with Comedy Channel and put them back on again.
- pr3998, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great.. but Stewart lost a LOT of credibility with this move. all the viewers, who popularized the shows, suddenly became Yet Another Soldier for the conglomerate machinery.
- guoweiok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the most amazing news i have heard in months....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is nice to see a company that know what side of their toast has butter on it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any "shtick" type show will eventually get tired and played.
