- ambrosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4At the end of the day though, having the shows creator's blessing to download doesn't make it any less illegal to do it. Jon Stewart doesn't 'own' the daily show any more then most musicians 'own' their published work (the fact that this is true may be ridiculous and driven by record/television company greed but it doesn't change the facts). Jon Stewart can't make it "okay" for people to download the show he gets paid to write/present.
I agree with everyone else, that television/riaa's luddism, their reluctance to accept new business models & delivery methods is them shooting themselves in the foot. However illegal is illegal. Artists can talk about how they really don't mind people downloading their work, how piracy doesn't hurt _their_ profits, but that doesn't make any of it legal. If the laws are wrong... write letters to politicians, vote for the right people, i don't know! But I hardly think the laws will change "if enough people keep breaking them".
That's my incoherent $0.02. - luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3okay i see this as a green light for someone to start a jon stewart tracker site
- fu_fish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg because it's a fun read, not so much because of the download thing.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Maybe Ted Kennedy, but Stewart?
I guess you're just new, but he ripped Clinton something awful 4 times a week back in 99, sorry you missed it apparently. He has his views, and I gotta say they do come through more strongly now, but if anything, he's an equal oppurtunity BS detector. - reqage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jon Stewart is the only intelligent person on T.V.
- Lumbeekid06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg.......because half of my media library is the daily show and he does in fact kick ass
- meatypuffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That article is a good read, it goes into way more than just "sure, download our show." I recommend reading the entire article and not just digging it because they gave their permission to download The Daily Show.
- angelwspr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg... we make the doughnuts, we don't drive the truck..
- Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe he doesn't realize that the advertisements don't come with the downloadable episode.
No $$ for him. - sandrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joh Stewart Rocks!
- Lumbeekid06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ehhhhhhh not so much LOL
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course Jon Stweart doesn't care if people download the show. He gets his salary either way and being on the internet just gives him more exposure. The people against downloading it from the net are the comedy central execs that sell advertising.
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can never find recent shows...
- AnthonyB., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0every "good" tv station should be doin this, that way i wouldnt have to use my vcr to record things i miss. And if they are worried about loosing tv ratings, they should just track thier tv downloads.
- zone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool, now i have peace of mind.
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All hail John Stewart!
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll count this in the plus column, though I probably will not watch any.
- FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this and the Adult Swim anouncement both in the same day. Maybe it's time for IPTV to take off.
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joh Stewart rules. Love his show. +digg.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read the interview, and Jon's tone wasn't exactly the "let's start a revolution" message most of you wanted to hear. He basically DOESN'T CARE how you get the show and watch it.
Comedy Central, however, does care. And Comedy Central is paying for the show, so they have the real say -- not Jon. - batman1989, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am aware that Jon rocks but I don't want to be aware.
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg - just because I think Jon Stewart is kick ass.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why doesn't he just advertise DURING the show... Maybe wear a Honey Nut Cheerios hat, e-Harmony.com T-shirt, and sip a few Mountain Dews throughout the show.
- Voide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with him, and everybody else that thinks that you should be able to download TV shows online legally. But theres one problem...season DVD's.
Think about Family Guy. One of the many reasons it came back, was because of the huge boost in DVD sales. Point being, peope are going to try to make money off of shows from DVD's and what not, which is why its illegal to download them off the internet.
But, yes, I do think you should be able to download shows... - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not a fan of Jon Stewart (I just don't find him funny, just like the rest of the late night hosts). But hell, being able to download a show like this over the net, *legally* is nothing but a good thing. Hopefully more will follow.
- bartendercorey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great read. Jon Stewart is The Daily Show.
- metalrock76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome.
- EN7r0py, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg, the daily show ro
- hoberion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Living in europe (the netherlands) we only get crappy reruns of shows which usually are being cancelled during the series so you cant really see one entire series, 90% of whats on tv is reruns at summertime so for something refreshing to come on tv is great, I watch the torrent every day, they should make it available on their website (wouldnt mind the commercials)!
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this will be the trend in the future. You'll notice that more and more shows can be downloaded legally now.
- heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what if comedy central made a version for the web where they had ads for other comedy central products instead of the regualar commercials on tv? i wouldn't pass them up or edit them out.
either way, go job Jon Stewart. - jruckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in light of this -- what are good sources to download recent daily show episodes? I can never seem to find anywhere that has regular, fresh shows
- poppopfizzfizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0John Stewart is the best thing on the TV!
- punkrock4life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whatever you do, don't get your news from the daily show- read a newspaper!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stewart kicks ass.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, Advertisers should be paying them more. Let's just leave the commercials in the downloads. :)
- seanroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jon Stewart is great. Love the show. +digg
- Xertion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Comedy Central makes tons of money off their shows. Really. I haven't heard of one of the fan sites that literally let you download the whole episodes of South Park, their biggest show, getting shut down or letters from lawyers. That doesn't stop the great sales of the DVDs and their Numbers are good enough to make that advertising money to boot. In fact I missed the whole first season of South Park and someone gave me them on a CD in a crappy .rm format and I was hooked! Watched it ever since and own a few of the DVD sets to Like the Passion of the Jew :)
Internet downloads =larger fan base = greater rating = greater DVD sales = $$$$ - rafal_m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm downloading the daily show for long time. I'm in school in morning, and I'm working afternoon so i can't watch on TV. i love it that i can watch it any time i want.
- TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, if this could trigger Comedy Central into hosting high speed torrents (or maybe direct downloads) of the shows that are up the second the show goes on the air, ads included, it could be very lucrative
and I'm sure many people would use those, which would be much quicker and reliable then regular torrent downloads, and just probably skip past the ads :P - jruckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0[lame]no one wants to share their torrent sources?[/lame]
- Nullifidian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is very likely that you will NOT be able to fast forward through commercials. It is very easy to produce a video file where this function is not available.
But I'll digg this anyways because George Carlin thinks Jon is the best thing since sliced bread. - Mongoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet.
- Pthalio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0someone else said it up there.if they made legal tv downloads that included advertising id support it. Yeah you can fast forward the ads but you can do that if you use a vcr or tivo too.
and ilove jon stewart :) - Ajzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good, because I've been downloading it for years.

What do you make of the quality of television now?
Karlin: I firmly believe that the number of quality programs on television right now is probably higher than it has ever been.
Stewart: It's a constant level of goodness.
What is that level?
Stewart: I'd say it's around 12 percent. I'd say 12 percent goodness, 88 percent crapola. I'm calling it the Goodness Theorem. The goodness is a constant, like pi, and it stays that way. What happens is, as the environment expands around it, the goodness expands at the exact same rate. So the ratio of goodness to crapola remains the same.
