- ronfez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24You can't even buy it if you wanted it @ the Canadian iTunes store :(
- upsidedork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21That's the second-best news I've received all week. I wonder who decided to make it free? Yay for them, whoever they are.
- PookyNeedsYou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Here's the torrent:
http://torrentspy.com/torrent/911174/The_Area_of_My_Expertise_by_John_Hodgman - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I love that people get mad at iTunes for giving something away for free.
- ct2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13US Store only .... stupid laws!
- jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11EXCELLENT! I've been meaning to buy it, and now I can put it on my ipod.
See, procrastinating saves money... - cdharrison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Everything you get from iTunes is DRMd.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Sorry for the double comment, didn't get in before the timer ran out...
John Hodgman says on his blog that there will not be a version for Canadians, sadly: http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=17324569&postID=116654853800616619&zx=cfgebg
"I think we must stipulate, alas, to the fact that the Canadians will never be satisfied.
That is all." - sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17digg down, I'm dumb
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I havent completed the download, but do these audiobooks have DRM?
- sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What does apple have to do with it?
- dizzybastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I found this torrent... downloading now...

hxxp://www.mininova.org/tor/485749 - sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Can somone send us the file via email? Or post it online? Canadians get jipped :(
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just in time for my long drive home for the holidays. Thanks, John Hodgman!
If you don't already know about it, he also has the Little Gray Book podcast, a very funny and dry series: http://www.littlegraybooks.com/hear.html - greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it's not,
anyways use the original demonoid link

thanks apple, but i don't want free drm - sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yeah and it's getting old... Digg needs to sort by digs, AND keep the comments and their replies grouped.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6yes but it can be removed who wants to set up a torrent of these so i dont have to sign up for itunes?
- Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This was easily the funniest book of the year.
- cellorich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can someone please give us a link to download it as a file from somewhere else please. I am in the UK and I cannot get it!!!!
- MacPPC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you have AAC conversion on your iTunes' preferences it will only show AAC, if you set up MP3 conversion then the menu will show "Convert to MP3"
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's sort of "free". All they ask is that you have an iTunes account to get it. It's called a "promotion". They're "promoting" John Hodgeman AND iTunes. So don't bitch about having to get an iTunes to get a legitimate and free version of the audiobook.
Although, I do feel sorry for the Canadians. Hopefully, someone will have pity on them and rip it to cd and post it somewhere for them. (Ripping it to cd is the easiest way to break the encryption) However, Canada IS clean AND people are nice. They also eat french fries with cheese curd and brown gravy. At least they have that going for them. ;) - heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You mean I have to sit and listen to him read each of the 700 hobo names?
Oh, brother. - arktos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i thought exactly the same thing, when he was playing at the beginning. but then he talked, and i realized it wasn't the same guy. jonathan colton (sp?) is the guy playing the theme song on this audio book.
maybe i just have scrubs on my mind. - TomRemixed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I own the book but now I don't have to read it. Yea illiteracy!!! Wait... why am I writing?
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is probably the funniest book I've ever read, and now it's free....and you don't even need your eyes to enjoy it!
It's the gift that keeps on giving...somehow. - Mipmap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What are you trying to say macmcrae?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4US store only :| Can anybody mirror this please?
- thepen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wouldn't appear to be free anymore?!!
- dizzybastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3torrent file seems to be complete =)
- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everything downloaded from iTunes has DRM. Burn it to a CD and rip it back if you're freaking out about them.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@mocheeze - it's off-topic, comment hijacking to get on the top of the page, and people don't respond well to links to Digg stories in comments anyway.
- sjuraud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason it's DRM'd is because typically this book is not free. Just look at the other posts of people that actually bought the book. This is an unusual promotion as far as I've seen I must say though.
- hwangm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2can someone send me a link pls .thanks. really want this for christmas
can't get this in Australia. - sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Burn and Rip?
We're good people... it's just a little colder up here! - kevmann16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I brought the book off amazon a couple of months ago it will be interesting to hear it read out since a lot of it is in table format. If John Hodgeman is reading it will be great. The list of Hobo names will be cool to hear.
I'm in the Uk so can't download it which is sad, I'm a little disappointed especially since I brought the book and I can't get it. Not that bothered I wasted my money on the book since I like having it in my book shelf but it is sad I can't hear John read it and non buyers can. - BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well you know, there are lots of people who don't use iTunes or iPods out there.
Also, if it's free, why DRM it? Apple is just trying to sustain its digital music monopoly. If it's free, free it! - Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dealing with DRM is a major barrier for some people. Ripping it to CD and burning it back is a pain in the arse for something this size. If it's free why not just distribute it in a form all can use like mp3. Better yet, iTunes should add a convert to mp3 option in addition to the burn/rip option since they amount to the same thing. The converter could even add some noise to make up for the quality difference and it would still be a great feature.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is kind of silly that our super Yankee neighbors can't get it too. Guess they make up for it in stolen satellite service. :) BTW didn't the tubes of the arpanet do away with that whole shipping expense thing for audio books?
- steveng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is there any way to get an iTunes account without a Credit Card?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Grief, don't bury him, it's a legitimate question.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Consider yourself lucky. The book blows. Waste of disk space. Incredibly awful audio book drek. Anybody who sits through seven hours of that nonsense is a moron with too much free time.
- sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You need a US Credit Card to do that :(
If somone sends me the file ( even DRMed ) I'll take care of the rest! - TechPedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh dammit! I just gifted this to someone over the weekend for Christmas!
- quiksliver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3since its free now, is it illegal for someone to link to a torrent/download?
- tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Better yet, iTunes should add a convert to mp3 option in addition to the burn/rip option since they amount to the same thing."
http://www.uvm.edu/ets/iPod/iTalk_images/Picture%203.jpg - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes, because it's not being distributed by Apple, which is the whole point of the promotion.
- SenatorPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When you combine the man who sings "Ikea" and "Baby Got Back" from the album "Jonathan Coulton Sings Songs By Black People" with the man who predicted the discovery of the furry lobster, only pure genius can result.
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The book and the audiobook are different experiences.
- doubleforte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not free anymore?
- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks MacPPC!
That almost works. Unfortunately I get an error that "Protected files cannot be converted to other formats." which seems a bit silly since it does let me burn it to CD. Which I did. It takes 6 CDs. -
