- rhfb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+95As an Alaskan, I'm ashamed at most everything my "elected" officials do.
- Rocketguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+93Maybe we should all "send an internet" to Mr. Stevens.
- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -2/+80"the people who are streaming through 10 - 12 movies at a time, or a whole book at a time" -- Sen. Ted Stevens
Here, here. Couldn't have said it better myself. It's not just people who stream 10 - 12 movies that, uhh, affect the internets, it's all those people who stream, uhh, a book, a whole book all at once.
Now if all you book streamers will just stop what you're doing, uhh, just stop it right now and go home, uhh, then the pipes will be more like a truck, a truck that you can dump, uhh, enormous amounts of internets on, enormous amounts of internets :-) - mdweaver7485, on 10/12/2007, -2/+70Oh dear the world is comming to an end, I acutally agree with Dvorak on something
- TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59If we did that our internet would get delayed because they are putting enormous amounts of material onto the tubes.
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54Mr Dvorak is not Senator Stevens mother, he doesn't need to teach him anything. Senator Stevens is in an office where he can do long term damage to the entire nation, if not the world. It's too late to teach Senator Stevens, it's time he was replaced with someone competent.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53I'm sure in his mind it makes sense....after all, a novel is typically a lot bigger than a physical dvd...and the dvd has a little hole in it...so even when it clogs up the 'tubes', little stuff can get through it!
- srg13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51Just don't download 10 movies at a time... or even worse: a whole book. It might slow down his personal internet.
- Waterrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45 I'm in NC and my "elected dodo "voted againest NN as well.
But have you noticed that NONE of the news broadcasts on TV have ever said word one about this issue?
One has to wonder why.... - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -11/+54Dvorak got it right again.
- 81v3d07g0d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37perhaps the senator should stick to politics, and keep away from tech
- xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Try NOT voting for them next time. Democracy works in many mysterious ways....
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28I was going to say pretty much the very same thing. I think this is the first time I have ever read a Dvorak article and actually agreed with it.
- mliving, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Ummm. Perhaps that idiot Stevens should learn the *****' basics of the technology he claims doesn't need government regulation or legislation.
Please what Mr. Stevens so adeptly illustrates is just how *****' stupid and buyable these Senators really are. They are truly clueless to the facts and the impact of their inaction. They were elected by the people NOT large multinational telecommunication corporations. He is supposed to be representing the people NOT special BILLION DOLLAR LOBBY GROUPS.
We'll educate people like Stevens for sure at the next election and kick his useless ass out of office! - mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Sure, decorated war veteran, awesome, go Stevens. You have to admit though, pulling 453 million out of post-Katrina war money to build two bridges is kind of... cold. Regardless, sticking to the topic at hand -- I think Stevens is a little out of his league and frankly, he was asking for this kind of backlash. Moral of the story: research your ***** before you speak in front of Congress and expect to be heard by millions of people.

- longterm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18It's a sad fact that over 90% of congresspeople are re-elected...
I read in the paper this morning that here in Nashville, a local millionaire got a bill passed so that he could buy wine across state lines, when ordinary citizens like myself aren't allowed to buy wine and have it shipped to my home. It's this kind of lunacy that goes on all the time, both at state and federal levels, and the failure of the net neutrality issue is just another example of how easily our congressmen are bought by big businesses like AT&T, Comcast, and such.
The only thing that gives me hope is the report that the higher-ups at Google are already promising a class-action lawsuit if they find that sites are being blocked because the site owners aren't paying the higher fees that are threatened by this latest turn of events. - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17The very fact that they had to go to the most inept person they could to get their way, just shows how premeditated the corruption the telcos perpetrate is. It isn't just confused telco people, it's evil people who are willing to screw you to get a buck. They could not have convinced a thinking or feeling person to give them their way. It makes me sad that this knowledge will never make it into the normal media, and will remain something only known in technology circles.
- jfritz828, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16In Pennsylvania, our state representatives voted an illegal pay raise for themselves at the end of session 2 years ago. In the time since then, the sponsors of the legislation retired from office, and those that voted for the legislation were voted out of office by their constituents.
This can be done... We can vote out of office our federal representatives.
Jim Gerlach... you will not be receiving my vote in the autumn election - SPNKrPunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17For those who are curious, here is a direct link to Stevens' speech:

Frankly, Stevens does not sound like he has a sufficient grasp on the English language, much less on Internet Politics. How embarrassing. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -18/+33Oh you're so savvy and intelligent! What snide remarks you make! And a coy little threat at the end just daring us to digg you down. Oh noes!
Go find a hole and bury yourself in it. No one cares about your worthless comments. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16That MP3 of Stevens is just creepy. He sounds like an Alzheimer's patient. He keeps repeating the word "streaming" totally out of context and he tries to correct himself but all that comes out us "uuhhh ummm uhh" It's seriously terrifying these people have the power to make laws. I wouldn't trust this guy to cook my breakfast.
- cheesefan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I hope my Internet to Stevens doesn't get lost in one of the many tubes.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Bad idea, Rocketguy. It's not a truck where you can just dump all your stuff. As TeKoverride wrote, it's tubes. And tubes can be clogged.
- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23"Where can we go to see which way our representatives voted on this bill?"
(can't resist)... Well, you can go to hell, and when you get there, ask them which way they voted :-)
(hmmm... religious humor, kind of risky, apologies if it offended anyone) - Unicron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It's "Hear, hear". Just think about it and this will be obvious. Otherwise excellent comment.
That is all, digg me down now. - FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12There are two dvorak's. You have the twit version that makes good points more often then not. Then you have Dvorak the writer who likes to get people into a furious rage to "sell more copies/get more hits".
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Where can we go to see which way our representatives voted on this bill?
- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"It's "Hear, hear". Just think about it and this will be obvious."
thx for the correction. Always thought it was "here, here", as in "I agree with you here". Turns out it's a shortened form of "hear him, hear him", which makes more sense. Now when I say it out loud I can spell it correctly :-) - rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I can't wait to hear his wireless access explanation...
probably birds are used to send the DVDs and books? - fatas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10With idiots like Stevens being elected you can understand why the Chinese Communist party fears democracy.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm guessing you've never watched C-SPAN. Often when they pan back from a tight shot of a congressman giving a speech, nobody's there.
- Lyianis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I don't care if you saved the world from destruction single handled. If you are arguing a point to the lawmaking body of a country you need to either know what you are talking about or not be a speaker. He is being ridiculed because he is a puppet of the telco's, making inane points(RTA and see what he says about billion-dollar persons) and attempting to compare the internet to a subway(no he doesn't say subway but its the closest thing his example resembles).
He is speaking before our lawmaking body on the behalf of a third party on an issue he knows nothing about. nuff said. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I would much rather that Ted stuck to something more lethal. Napalm comes to mind.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The depths of ignorance have never been tested as much as during his speech.
- KeiichiMorisato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9When and how can we get this idiot out of office?
Shall we all move to Alaska just to kick him out in time for the next election?
ARGH! - dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I just listened to the Ted Stevens recording. The first 3/4 seems to argue in favor of net neutrality, and the last 1/4 is violently against it. It's all really vague and jumbled. He doesn't complete most of his arguments before moving onto the next. And he stutters a lot.
- Shultzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Langford - Actually, it's worse then that... Stevens is the chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. He is also President pro tempore of the senate. I other words they went to him because he holds the cards AND is clueless.
Power in the Senate comes from tenure and Stevens is the longest serving Republican. I wonder when he is up for re-election???? - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10August Dvorak and William Dealey invented the dvorak keyboard layout in the 1920's
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I normally disagree with Dvorak... but not this time.
I'm as shocked as anyone. - hyberion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A metaphor is a dangerous weapon in the hands of the inept.
But hey, if we spent thousands of dollars on his campaigns and took him to expensive dinners, then we could teach him the other side as well. The problem here is that only one side gets to speak to them, and their ears only hear the voices of those writing checks. If there was enough money, trips, perks and dinners in it, they would stand there with a straight face and tell us that up is down, black is white, and the net is a tube. And there will always be the puppet talking heads who will agree with everything they say.
The sad part is, the vast majority of people out there, who aren't' tech-savvy, and who don't' understand the fundamentals of how this works, are only hearing one side of the argument. They're only hearing the talking heads agree with the bought and sold governmental bodies that are promoting this. They don't hear from us, and those who could speak for us because we don't put any money in their pockets, we don't buy them dinners, and we don't fly them to golfing trips . . .well. . .wherever.
What is killing the system is the money. When the rich can buy a different government than the people who must live under it, something has gone terribly wrong and must be changed.
But don't ask me. . ."America's got talent" is on. . .
Peace. - dave9999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10He's a senator!! When you speak in front of the nations lawmakers don't you think you should know what your talking about? Especially when your advocating for someone who's paying you.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+111- The problem is that when you untangle the Senator's arguement, all he is really saying is that large commercial enterprises that create huge amounts of traffic should have their traffic segregated from the average user and that both may see some benefit out of this.
2- It's Dvorak. - mirokudesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Even if he doesn't read the "Internets" he may get from his site, at least send a comment to let staff or someone know how ridiculous he looks. Also, it may slow down his personal Internet for awhile too!
http://stevens.senate.gov/contact.cfm - deathscytheh64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'll give you reasons why we are soon going to have a two tiered Internet.
Its because Joe Everyperson isn't in the know (or dare I say it smart enough) to understand why Net Neutrality is important. Its because our Government Officials we elected are getting paid off on special interest groups (hello telecoms) and don't care there is a thing called a blog or a company called YouTube when they get flown all around the world for free by AT&T. I love that the telecoms want to take a hit to cable with offering TV, but if it means that people who want to produce original content get shut out then its not worth it. - adhocboy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Dvorak calling a politician an idiot. There's an irony in there somewhere; I can feel it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10" It's not a truck. It's a series of tubes."
makes me want to drive a truck up this idiots rear tube. - maseone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I know letters to senators don't seem to mean much, but I sent this one anyway.
Senator Ted Stevens,
Please take a step back and think about what net neutrality really means to both consumers and users of the internet, regardless of personal or business activity.
The example of an e-mail taking 5 days to reach its destination because of the internet traffic being backed up is a completely inaccurate example. However, this WILL be our reality if the Telco’s/Cable co's decide there are better uses for the internet than delivering your e-mail, or your video clip you wanted to send to your friends/family, or your personal website used to display your resume to possible employers, or your favorite news site, or your ingenious idea for a new website that sparks jobs and commerce in the US (read: ebay.com, godaddy.com, Firefox, digg.com, myspace.com, craigslist.com, flickr.com, evite.com, google.com, and many more).
Please think about this and the impact to our nation's consumers, internet users, and legit companies that are not Telco’s or Cable co's.
No net neutrality will leave the internet broken, split apart, and very China like.
Don't let the corporations of The United States turn our nation into a corporate communism. Information is power in the information age, don't think for a second a small group of corporations won't hesitate to take over this nation when able - and I would think no net neutrality is one step closer to this sad fate.
Thank you for at least reading my view. - pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's truly frightening that Senator Stevens, with all his wisdom, is third in line for the presidency.
- sixtymonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7the scary part is realizing that most of our "policy makers" are just as ignorant on most of the things they make policy on...
