- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -7/+117Because this one has a headline saying "Jifffy Lube Scam!" and your's had "auto mechanic ripoff artists caught on tape". Even with the misspelling, "Jiffy Lube Scam!" is a better headline.

- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55What. On. Earth. Five out of nine stores were scamming, a DM who lies straight into the camera and then a bland press release with little in the way of hope that they'll fix this problem? Jiffy Lube, you've just lost a customer. I'm going to buy a pan and ramps next time around and get my hands dirty. What a bunch of bastards. Kudos to NBC for breaking the story.
- maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53Don't go to big name auto service places. They love to rip you off.
When I was in college, I went to Midas for one of the their "free" brake
checkups. The staff was nice and professionally dressed. They claimed
I needed all new breaks AND a new master cylinder. Since I was a starving student,
they even offered to let me use their phone to make a long distance phone call
to my dad to get the $500 (this is 20 years ago) they wanted. My did had done
plenty of auto repair and smelled a rat. He told me to go get a second opinion.
When I tried to leave the Midas shop, they resorted to scare tactics and were
'worried' that I might have an accident on the way home ( sounds more like
the mafia to me).
So I took it to a run down shop next to my apartment. The place was run by a bunch of
mean looking biker dudes that looked like they'd sooner kill me than fix my car.
In fact they were located behind a place called "Satan's Cycle Works" in Phoenix.
That made this naive little college freshman a little nervous, but I went and
asked them to look at the brakes. I walked home and got a phone call within
minutes from them to come get my car. They said nothing was wrong with
my brakes. The guy bled the brake lines for good measure and charged me
a mere $12 for his time.
They bailed me out time and time again when my car had problems. They
even explained in detail what they did to fix something every time. I actually
learned a few tricks about auto repair from them.
The moral of the story? Find a place run by bikers. They know how to fix stuff
and they are more honest than the trash that work at Midas and JiffyLube. - Hermitwise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54This is what happens when we don't understand the technology we use.

- GopherGod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42These guys are *****. This makes me so pissed, just watching it.
- vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40In Alabama, my father use to run a honest business for oil change and repair. We actually did the work and got good recommendations. Sadly it closed down to a new rival opening up. It was Jiffy Lube. We went back later to look at the property around a year later, we found over hundred notes and postings on the building to have the business reopen because of lots of problems with the cheaper and so much more "reliable" work they offered. I was glad someone wanted our business but the business just didn't run with so few people. I really do not like when I don't get the serviced done that I was offered or asked for that i wanted. Just not right.
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37That's why I always hang around and watch them do the service on my car...no matter how long it takes.
- Airspeeder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36I'm going to buy an NBC jacket or something from the NBC store and wear it to any auto-repair shop I go into in the future.
- psychophil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Jiffy Lube and its 3,000 oil change advertisiong is itself a scam. Check your owners manual people, you won't find a car made in the past 15 years that recommends oil changes that frequent. A car I just bought a month ago recommends changed every 7,000 miles. 5,000 with 'harsh' driving.
Don't fall for the hype. - scottylist, on 10/12/2007, -20/+49@Cyberdactyl
Why do you care that this one was dugg and yours wasn't? Do you get paid for diggs? Or do you just want to be the coolest geek on the block?
What matters is that this video was finally brought to our attention. - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Great . . . and I've taken my car there for its last three or four oil changes. Last time I was there I think one of the ***** took my USB drive off my keyring. Sure I probably shouldn't have left it on, but still. Good thing all it had were MP3 files on it, but it was a 1GB stick I got from my dad for free, so I was pretty pissed.
Guess I'll be finding another place to get my oil changed and other basic maintinence done on my car. - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32"this is going to get dugg into the ground fast - someone post it to goole video or youtube"
If you see something and that you think needs to be done, then do it yourself. - hodyoaten, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29I would skip going to these places, but the damn auto manufacturers keep putting the oil filters where you need a jackstand, flashlight, and trained monkey with long limbs to get the job done.
- theTIguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Once we took our jeep to jiffy lube to have the oil changed. They drained it and checked the other fluids and what not, but they never put the oil back in. Then the attendant told us to start the car...
Long story short, Jiffy lube ended up buying a new engine for that jeep, as the old one was trashed, now all work done at that station has to be checked and signed by 2 people. - jclicky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22To find honest mechanics:

"this is going to get dugg into the ground fast - someone post it to goole video or youtube"
haha nothing could ever take down an akamai.com server. I think they host more servers then google and definitely youtube.
not even if it was a tripple slashdot/fark/digg.com effect could ***** em it up. These are the guys that took over microsoft.com during the DDOS attacks, (running on linux btw) - NSXROX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Jiffy Lube dirty *****.
- itsmrdumass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Jiffy Lube mechanics are idiots. Took my car there once and they forgot to put my splash guards back on the bottom of my car. So I took it to the dealer to get fixed and then sent their corporate office the bill. Ended up costing them $250 for their crappy service.
- Parisi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Wow, and to think i have been bringing my car to them for the past 2 years for oil change every 3000 miles, somehow a knew a had a bad feeling about them, there was even a couple of occasions i noticed my car was mysteriously low on coolant after a visit to them and they wanted to charge me for it to top it off and there was always the case were the receipt would show little things that should have been done but clearly were not , rest assured Jiffy lube has lost a customer for life, i will be sure to pass the word around as well.
Thanks Digg!
-Parisi - Shroomie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19It's things like this that make me glad I do all my own work. Much cheaper, and I know it's done right.
- apsudraconis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Well, given the statement made by Jiffy Lube noted at the end of the story, it sounds like he was doing precisely what his bosses wanted him to do. Though good for the news station for breaking this, as many people would never be able to tell if a repair had been or not been done.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18THIS HAPPENED TO ME!! Fortunately after the second time around a guy told me that they had never made a filter change for me and he apologized and fixed it out, I double check my filters now. JIFFY LUBE SUX!!! I WOULD NOT GO THERE!
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18 It's not just Jiffy Lube - it's pretty much 5 out of 9 automotive services. I've been getting ripped off continuously at different stores. I conducted my own investigation with my own pinhole camera. Those bastards charge for inspection, and never even look at what they're supposed to be checking. I've been doing my own repairs for 2 years now. Believe me, it's no rocket science.
- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19There's Jiffy Lube's all over the place where I live. It's kinda scary going there now. But those coupons I get in the mail are so tempting. I just end up going to the dealer. Costs more but I trust them more and they use genuine parts.
- captainnapalm6, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19The moral of the story is never change your oil.
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Holy ***** ... owned. I hope their entire business is shut down completely ... seriously.
- gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I have a current model E46 M3 and have changed my oil just fine no vacuum pump required in between the ones I get as part of the warranty service from the dealer every 15k (more like 10K on mine).
I did have trouble when I bought some tires from a shop that had no clue how to change tires on any car you couldn't jack up on the axle though -- (never mind the very obvious 6 jacking plates the thing has on it). Dumbasses bent every control arm under the car -- then they wanted the opportunity to install the new ones themselves? Yeah, no. - blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Links to all 3 parts of the series: http://www.nbc4.tv/mechanicinvestigation/9265933/detail.html#

Jiffy Lube said it fired 6 employees over the incident including the district manager who denied being the district manager. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15You're correct, but we can't possibly know everything. That's why we're hiring experts to do the job, it does not give them the right to scam us.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18FWIW, it's getting harder to change oil on all cars - not just American ones. Buy and M3 or a high-powered German car and you'll need mechanics to basic stuff like oil changes because the oil doesn't even drain out without a vaccum pump. Dumb.
- p0und, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16just buy some cheap ramps...
- wulfflower, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Why don't you go post it then?
These people didn't expect to be dugg now did they? - Metal_Hurlant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16No consequences for them, so why stop?
Sure, customers bitch a bit about it when a story breaks out, but the underlying message is "every mechanic cheats, but you still need them for your car to keep working"
So why should they stop? They have no trouble lying and playing dumb on camera, and they'll have no trouble cheating more customers the instant they refund the journalist's crew.
As long as the penalty is simply to "refund whatever you've been caught stealing", it's a strong incentive to keep stealing.
For what it's worth, I stay clear of brand name shops. Small gas station mechanics are underrated.
They don't always have the latest tech, but they know how to do all the regular maintenance stuff. They don't have TV ads, so their business happens by word of mouth: They have an actual incentive to not screw their customers.
(and they don't mind if you watch them work on your car.) - hriwo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20http://cbs4boston.com/iteam/local_story_334182720.html
Don't know if thats the same video, because I can't see the video for some reason. - easycheez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14It isn't just Jiffy Lube, I had a coupon for a 8$ oil change at Firestone in Omaha on 72nd & Dodge. They said I needed a new serpentine belt, which was true the old one was squealing and had some decent sized cracks. He said it would cost 94$. I told him I could do it for 20 so I wasn't interested. he says" the tool you need for the tensioner from Mopar is a hundred dollars alone" I am skeptical so I just take my truck and run with my cheap oil change. I buy a pre-cogged lifetime serp belt for 18$, and the special tool... you guessed it... a 3/4" socket.
- Evoguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16You shouldn't trust your dealer either, I've found shoddy work on my car from included 'free maintence' from the dealer on more than one occasion. You should really learn to do the work yourself, it's the only way it will get done right. You can go buy genuine parts from their parts store, and you'll be much better off. With a good set of tools, ramps, jackstands, and a ODB-II scanner, there's very little you can't do by yourself, even on a modern car.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12damn, similar thing happend to my grandma's car. they took the oil out of her oldsmobile, and never put fresh oil in. she drove it around for a week, and came to me saying that the car was running rough and hot. i pulled out the dipstick, not a single drop of oil. luckily, the engine withstood the torture, and i put the oil in myself. ever since stories like this, i have become a huge do-it-yourselfer, thats the way its gotta be.
- DarkYang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I have a friend that works at Jiffy Lube near me, and she says that she hasn't personally done this, but it doesn't surprise her either.
- whozyodaddy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14That sucks man. Hope all is well now though.
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Jiffy Lube Customer Care Feedback Form:
http://jiffylube.com/CustomerCare/cst_Feedback.aspx
I'm not a customer, but I definitley gave them a piece of my mind - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Whenever my dad gets his whatever serviced on our vehicles we stand and watch them do it. Sometimes they wait and watch us for up to an hour before they stick it out and actually do something.
- pak314, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15One time I took my car to a Jiffy Lube and they changed the oil and suggested one of the brake light was not working. It was only $6 to fix it so I said go ahead trusting them. Next time I go to get an oil change, they again say a back light is not working. I get a little suspicious and decline fixing it. They enter my info into the system and work on the oil change. A while later they come back and say my light was not bad after all... perhaps it was glare from the sun. After that incident I always wondered if they push these broken light problem to new customer to pad up their profit. Perhaps they realized they scammed me once they didn't want to push it again.
Anyway I can't prove anything but I don't feel comfortable with them anymore and found a family owned oil change place that will do the work promptly and not push other things on me unless I ask. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It worked for me using Firefox and VLC.
- overlordmead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15hey, As a honda owner who actually has japanese on his engine block('82 Civic, woot) I can tell you that it is still a pain in the ass to change the filter.
