- applesd, on 02/04/2009, -1/+15That's a huge amount of layoffs!
- PacificStandard, on 02/05/2009, -2/+11Ninja Bank is also reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black.
- Betrayal, on 02/05/2009, -0/+9We need World War 3 soon
(that is to distract from the economy) - alexanEmpire, on 02/05/2009, -1/+9I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!

- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -0/+6Sounds to me like someone needs to ask the US government for a bailout...
- paulsabo, on 02/05/2009, -0/+6*****... Panasonic is one of the few companies I would really hate to see go under
- Eezyville, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5Oh *****. Don't the Japanese sometimes commit suicide if they lose their jobs. I remember reading articles about Japanese men who killed themselves since they couldn't provide for their families.
- RepublicofJosh, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5Too bad they're 4 times faster than the fastest LCD's on the market...and they have the same life expectancy...and better more life-like colors..
Did I mention they're cheaper to produce? - Barackalypse, on 02/05/2009, -2/+7Looking on the positive side, almost no televisions are produced or assembled in the US anymore, so we won't be losing very many jobs because of this!
- v0ider, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5Plasma TVs, digital cameras, camcorders, HDTVs, Blu ray players, DVD Burners, phones, and microwaves.
- jessedigg, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5Some of the best looking TV’s on the market today.
- lostinseganet, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4True this will be the death of some people...
- LordBacon, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4It's called : Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars
- RepublicofJosh, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4I own two panasonic tv's, a panasonic camera, and a huge ass microwave...and I'm fully satisfied with them all. And I wouldn't trade either of my plasma's for any sony television they make. (And I sold tv's for almost 2 years...so I have a decent knowledge on who makes a good television...)
- yerdaddy, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3And semiconductor and passive components in most of everything else that doesn't actually have the ***** name on the outside.
- v0ider, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3War economies always get countries out of depression. World War II got the US out of the Great Depression and Hitler temporarily got Germany out of a hyperinflationary depression with his invasion of bordering countries.
- alexanEmpire, on 02/05/2009, -1/+4Mr.BabyMan?
- ilgaz, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3It would surprise many people but compared to Sony, Panasonic is huge. It is about 2x size of Sony so 15.000 laid off isn't big as Sony laying off same amount of people.
http://www.answers.com says
Sony: Employees: 180,500
Panasonic: Employees: 305,828
We gotta add Sanyo to it which is also huge. You have to go and live in Japan for a week or so to figure size of Panasonic (National there) - mustang460, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3Because cutting advertising is the best way to help a struggling company.
- Betrayal, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3At least he's got Bacon in his Username, that'll get him some diggs.
- Flaptastic, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3Sadly, that isn't just a trait of the Japanese. Losing one's livelihood is horribly traumatic for anyone, but especially for those who support a family.
- alexanEmpire, on 02/05/2009, -2/+4At first glance, I thought the last part of the headline was "***** Pants". Turned out to be "Shut Plants". [t.t]
- Elranzer, on 02/05/2009, -0/+2The US got out of the Great Depression in WW2 because we SOLD WEAPONS to everyone (enemies and allies alike) during the war. We came out the superpower because we had ALL of the money. This is also why France hates us. Even though we "bailed them out" in WW2, we also sold weapons to the Nazis to begin with.
Many historians (high school students and Republicans) believe all wars will help the economy. This is inaccurate, as the Iraq War has proved, has bankrupted us. It depends on which role in the war you have. When you're the invader (as the USA was in the Iraq War), you spend money and nearly go broke.
So who was selling the weapons during the Iraq War? That's right, CHINA. That's why they now have the booming economy, and we're going to way the UK did during WW2. - dengzhi, on 02/05/2009, -0/+2(-,-メ)

- Barackalypse, on 02/05/2009, -0/+2As of 2007 that wasn't correct, I doubt it has suddenly changed:
"Yet Vizio has just 85 employees in the USA, most of whom are customer service representatives. For each of its models, Vizio assembles a team of supplier partners strung across the globe. Its 42-inch LCD unit, for example, contains a panel from South Korea, electronic components from China, processors from the USA and is assembled in Mexico. "
http://www.usatoday.com/educate/college/business/a ... - RepublicofJosh, on 02/05/2009, -1/+3Panasonics are rated and approved by Energy Star...
- toxicshok, on 02/05/2009, -0/+2is what the CEO said
- skinnyskittles, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1Watch your mouth! There's a ***** baby in the room!
- 80hd, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1Lcd technology is catching up to Plasma though. Refresh times are becoming negligible and adaptive backlighting is pushing contrast ratios into/beyond plasma territory at prices that are profitable for LCD and close to break-even on plasma sets.
Right off the top of Best Buy, you can pickup a 120hz 50' samsung lcd for $2700 with a 50,000:1 ratio that will not suffer from phosphor half life issues and pulls a constant 290 watts when running.
For $3700, Plasma gets you a 50' Panasonic with 30,000:1 that is 'energy star certified' despite drawing 290-360 watts (pure black vs pure white screen).
The figure of 480hz plasma's is only technically correct since those panels consider refreshing each color array to be a 'frame'. Since refreshes are done in primary additive color pairs plus a luminance pass, refreshing RG BG RB RGB is each considered a 'frame' though the only thing different from each pass is the chroma channel info or brightness, not whole frame data. Because of this, plasma's have 'rainbow flickering' though it doesn't jump at you like DLP sets, it's still there.
When it comes to brightness distribution and pixel defects however, LCD has nothing on plasma.
Also, search for 'LCD mura' LOTS of screens have this problem (especially 30'+) but nobody really notices it because the name of the problem is not widely known so people have a hard time talking about it. - RogerMcDodger, on 02/05/2009, -1/+2:(
- xptoast, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1I can't watch my mouth. It's out of view. Someone watch it for me. Tell me if it does any tricks.
- ilgaz, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1I just bought a Japanese TV (Toshiba) for a very cheap price and damn thing beats my Samsung 22" monitor in terms of black level and colour quality.
Just saying, if Samsung and other junk kills Japanese companies by huge price drops and price fixing, it would be sad for quality of consumer electronics. - Elranzer, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1The fundamentals of the economy are strong.
- Elranzer, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1***** is actually a far bigger company than Sony in Japan.
- ilgaz, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1It would break the purpose of buying Sanyo. They bought them in state of such economy since they needed their expertise in certain areas of technology. In fact, they bought "know how". Why fire them?
- ilgaz, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1Trust me, up to certain size, LCD is fine but when you reach to 30"+ and expect "Cinema quality" in regards to colour quality and image stableness, contrast deepness, Plasma will beat hell out of LCD.
Pioneer ships both LCD and Plasma and they say the same thing.
Of course a BARCO CRT projector will beat hell out of anything on market but it is at insane price levels. - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1 And the CEO's will get billions of dollars and a villa in France.
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1why dont they admit? "panasonic cuts 15,000 former sanyo employees"
- DRT23, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1I did my part, just bought a 46PZ85u two weeks ago!
- orthodoxDrew, on 02/05/2009, -0/+1overproduction ftL
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -0/+0to eliminate competition. panasonic doesnt need much of sanyo's knowhow.
