- thebaron2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+126"After EGM let Tretton know they had indeed phoned 18 stores and found half of them had PS3s in stock, some stores with as many as 20 consoles, Jack held firm "if only nine of the 18 stores you contacted had supplies, that seems to be a clear indication that sales continue to be outstanding." So there you have it, Jack's not backing down. We're guessing our check is already in the mail."
::shaking head::
Did he not think anyone would actually CHECK after he made those comments? I mean what the hell, is this guy just a complete moron?
"I defy you to find ONE PS3 sitting on a shelf for 5+ minutes!! Oh... wait a minute... well 50% ain't bad, right? Right?!" - rshu4you, on 10/12/2007, -4/+73Send this by E-Mail and Bill Gates will send YOU $500.00 for every forward!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+74No doubt. The Target near my house has had the same 60GB for 6 weeks.
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51You just need to wash your underware more than once every 3 months.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Okay, Tretton's comment has made it abundantly clear that we've finally discovered one of the biggest problems Sony's facing right now: "Yes men." I think the CEOs and executives of these large companies who are out of touch with their consumership are being filtered only the information that their cronies will allow them to see.
In the end, this really starts making a lot of sense, as you figure "These guys can't possibly be *trying* to keep us from being their customers." I think Jack, like a lot of his executive buddies, needs to head out to the streets and see for himself what's going on with his coveted product, and stop listening to the douchebags that surround him. - NICU, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49Why is this being written about now? The interview happened in early January, and he promised the money to the person interviewing him... Its definitely funny, but why not talk about this in early January when it was new.
- SpectralSounds, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4450% of the stores had them. The other 50% stopped carrying them a month ago because nobody was buying.
- eSecuris, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39So how do we collect???
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37@bobalobabingbon
Adults, often when speaking, use generalities.
Ex: "Give me a minute", "A couple of pints", "A few hours", "Last summer", "Your mom is a tramp".
It's not uncommon to say something that is not exact to convey a concept. "The same one for six weeks." If you get groceries every week (as adults do), and walk by the game department, you could say the same thing.
Also, it's silly to get angry at teh Internets and you're stupid. [/condescending-sarcasm] - dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35who the hell is jack trettin anyways?
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Tretton and Harrison are both just puppets. Sony is like Scientology. They have thier own reality.
- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30That's funny because at the store I work at we've literally had PS3's for weeks. Out of about 9 consoles that we got in stock in early January, we still have one of those units. Where's my $1200 Jack?
- philipz78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29You mean Xbox 360s. Good luck finding a Wii.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Holy ***** best buy by me has over 14 in stock for 3 days now, so does the EB games.
O by the way this is the same moron that said Killzone 2 CGI video was "100% ingame" - dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24@bobalobabingbon you're getting dugg down because your comment was dumb and pointless, not because you were wrong, he made a simple point and you had to nitpick
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Evidently, college hasn't taught you that punctuation is a good thing.
- rctech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Sony's step by step Profit Plan:
1.) Create infinite hype for the PS3.
2.) Sell PS3s at $600 each.
3.) Buy unsold PS3s at $1200 each.
4.) ????
5.) Profit!!! - Shivalyn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20No, there was still a glut. I remember standing in a Best Buy glaring at some PS3's sitting on the shelf, incredulous that I could have a PS3 right then and there, but the Wii that I came in for was out of stock.
Later, when I actually got my Wii, was at Toys R Us. The manager asked how many of us were in line for a PS3. No one. How many are waiting for a Wii? Everyone.
Dude owes me $1,200 - sonaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The MicroCenter near my work has had at least 3 in stock for an entire weekend. I know, because I went there to buy some computer supplies on two different days of the weekend. There they sat.
I also hung out for about 30 minutes and played the Wii on display (you know, the console you actually CAN"T BUY before someone snaps it up in 5 minutes) and no one picked up a PS3, nor even played the display model the whole time i was there.
more corporate chest thumping, big news. - greghunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Maybe Sony were worried that they weren't leaking enough money, so decided to just throw it away :)
- valkyries, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15i walk into both the walmarts in the town im going to college in has atleast 4-5 ps3s that have been sitting theres for a few weeks
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Your comment would be interesting, if it weren't utter nonsense.
- dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16@bobalobabingbon
who cares? everybody knows they aren't selling, so it probably was the same one. - cr4ft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I have one here at Best Buy that's been sitting here for 4 weeks
- intekra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Some Facts:
There are 14 Best Buy Stores in Colorado.
At this moment, 7 of them have 60GB PS3's in stock.
There are 128 60GB PS3's among those 7 stores, with another 250 or so on the way.
There is NO shortage of PS3's.
The Wii on the other hand... None in stock whatsoever. - ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@superkendall
You can get them on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16868110009 - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11They where available and in stock mid dec and after.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You need a new wife.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7LOL True that
Never thought of that, Sony did infact meet the demand, despite being shot down by press and rumors saying that they would never be able to do it
funny
but still I don't think that guy is saying it on the behalf of Sony, I think he's just an idiot - Riluske, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I went looking for a Wii yesterday, and every store I went into had at least 4 PS3's.
Sadly, no Wii :( - InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"3) ???"
That would be: Get Target on the other line after calling up Jack. Not that hard to fill in. - Jon24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2007/20070210.jpg

Best buy, circuit city, target, and walmart in N.Canton OH have them also. - will4042, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10and the quotes are never ending...
I'll go down to my local bestbuy and pick a ps3 up for him them claim the money - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, I KNOW that's not the case. The K-Mart around the corner from me has been selling PS3 games since launch, but hasn't yet had a PS3 console for sale.
- NotZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@shadus
The past two weekends I've went looking for a Wii in Canton. Every store (Target, Bestbuy, EB, Gamestop, Wallmart) had PS3's in stock except Toys R Us. None had any Wiis. :( - DrunKao, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You wrote: "I live in a pretty populated area and I see plenty of Wii's at my local Walmarts, Targets, Gamestops etc."
Apparently you're living in some alternate dimension, where everything known to be true here is the exact opposite there. Don't you find it strange that your experience is so contrary with what everyone else across the country is experiencing?
You wrote: "Can some one tell me why Jack Tretton thinks the fact that you cannot buy a PS3 at a retail store 3 months after the release is a good thing. Think about it customer goes to the store looking for a PS3 its "sold out" but there are plenty of 360's and Wii's available for less money, I don't think that's good for Sony."
If you remove "Jack Tretton thinks", switched PS3 and Wii, replaced less with more and Sony with Nintendo, your first comment would have made more sense to us, but it would still be completely daft. Wait, I'll just do it for you.
"Can some one tell me why the fact that you cannot buy a Wii at a retail store 3 months after the release is a good thing. Today was the first time, after the PS3s launch, that I went to my local Walmart and didn't see any PS3s behind the display case. - dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I always thought stores that sold games we required to sell the consoles, since I know the stores make a very slim margin on the consoles.
- unclefrank, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11To be fair in the actual EGM article it states that the interview took place in EARLY January. I still think there were PS3's available but not nearly the glut there is now.
- imdrfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can see the conversation now...
ImDrFreak: "Yes, Mr. Tretton? I was just at Best Buy, and I videotaped the shelf of PS3's there, which weren't being purchased. The videotape is over five minutes long. Please send me the $1200.00."
Tretton: "Did you buy one?"
ImDrFreak: "No."
Tretton: "Then, it doesn't work. the deal was I'd give you $1200 for the Playstation that you found. You have to buy one."
ImDrFreak: "Hell no, I'm not spending 600 bucks on that piece of crap!"
ah... Sony. You fill me with joy. Like a train wreck. - BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wow, this guy has a seriously tenuous grasp on reality.
- kjcramer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The best Buy down the street from me has 37 60gb units on the floor, I counted. College avenue in Fort Collins Colorado if anyone is looking to pick up a pallet.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Again we have a person who sits at a store to watch the sale of PS3's. How do you know they are the same ones? You don't."
Meh, if you see the same number day in day out you're going to come to conclusions. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's a genius plan. They put out all these PS3s for $600 each. Nobody buys them. Then, they buy all the PS3s back for $1200 each. I don't think I need to do the math to tell that Sony will be making quite a bit of money from that shrewd marketing strategy. The fact that they were already selling at a loss will only increase profits! =)
- mwmwmw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just like a previous poster mentioned, I remember watching this guy being interviewed on TV saying that the CGI scenes from Killzone 2 they were showing at some convention were 100% in-game. At that point the interviewer made him repeat what he just said several times and then just dismissed the comment because it was such an obvious lie. And, now this stupid comment from the same mouth. I wish Sony would realize that sycophantic employees and the so obviously untrue things they say only serve to undermine what credibility they have left with the gaming crowd. Sony needs to stop being so arrogant and realize that they have a real problem on their hands.
- mnemonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Useless crap, the guy profits from the hits -- it's just a movie of a face that goes from :) -> :(
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe he owes me quite a bit of money.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Go to hell.
- Ujjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4On the other hand, I'll give you 100 bucks if you can find a Wii on the shelves for more than five seconds. And if you do, you'll probably buy it before anyone else can, anyway.
- biggdunc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is umm, not only lame
but seems to be a stock buy back... of sorts
makes sense, he can fudge his numbers, raise sale numbers, and give all the ps3's to umm, well, guess he'll figure who would want them
perhaps some nigerian bankers?? -
