- QuietDean, on 08/28/2008, -18/+341250GB a month? jeez I'd kill for that, in the UK I pay through the nose for 40GB.
- casbar, on 08/28/2008, -15/+309This is ***** and I easily foresee it being the wave of the future for all ISP's.
- nzezelj89, on 08/28/2008, -5/+273This isn't why I'm mainly leaving Comcast (cost), but bandwidth limit definitely is part of the reason...
- enantiodromia, on 08/28/2008, -5/+184games use tiny amounts of bandwidth compared to file sharing and downloads. you'll be fine.
- sinrtb, on 08/28/2008, -17/+185can we get the FCC to shoot this plan down too?
- widgetmaker, on 08/28/2008, -43/+210250GB is a lot even for heavy users, most isps here have caps or fair use policies in the 20-60 range. don't be so harsh on them transparent caps are better than opaque fair use policies. This is a step in the right direction.
- defiantone, on 08/28/2008, -1/+164I've only got one question. Verizon - where is my FIOS? I'd switch the second it became available in my area I'd be happy to dump this comcraptic stuff.
- nerdzero, on 08/28/2008, -1/+160From their FAQ about the issue...
"What will happen if a customer exceeds 250 GB of data usage in a month?
The vast majority - more than 99% - of Comcast customers will not be impacted by a 250 GB monthly bandwidth or data usage threshold. If a customer exceeds more than 250 GB and is one of the heaviest data users who consume the most data on our high-speed Internet service, he or she may receive a call from Comcast's Customer Security Assurance ("CSA") group to notify them of excessive use. At that time, Comcast will tell the customer exactly how much data per month he or she had used.
If a customer surpasses 250 GB and is one of the top users of the service for a second time within a six-month timeframe, his or her service will be subject to termination for one year. After the one year period expires, the customer may resume service by subscribing to a service plan appropriate to his or her needs."
So, they will tell you after the fact that you have used too much. If you do it again, they will terminate your service for a year. Shouldn't they provide some way to check this information beforehand so you know to curb your usage? I hope my Netflix Roku box does not make me go over the limit! - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -6/+132note to self: download more at the office.
- Falldog, on 08/28/2008, -2/+127FiOS FTW
- thegamingguy, on 08/28/2008, -3/+118They already over charge for their service, primarily because they are the 'only guy in town' and can strong-arm the consumer. Many people would leave just because of this if they had decent alternatives. That fundamental principle is why they have the leverage to pull such a move.
- gyronic, on 08/28/2008, -5/+106Comcast is laughing all the way to the bank with this.
Consumers will start paying for bandwidth, not speed.
You will pay for delivery of ads, and you WILL like it! - DrDrrae, on 08/28/2008, -1/+99Unfortunately, probably not many. I would be willing to bet for most people, Comcast is their only choice for high-speed broadband.
- DforSpiD, on 08/29/2008, -0/+93Same in Australia...
- sinrtb, on 08/28/2008, -1/+90wow interesting, because in my area Comcast is ALL the other ISPs. Must be nice having a choice.
- bigp3rm, on 08/28/2008, -7/+91I wonder how much BW I use playing all these damn games. I need help but I didn't want a cap!
- goofygarber, on 08/29/2008, -1/+81Absolutely not 250gb... games use very little bandwidth, up or down.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -12/+88my condolences go out to those affected, ***** COMCAST
- sockpuppets, on 08/29/2008, -1/+75No more alt.binaries.pedobear for you!
- gbarberi, on 08/29/2008, -5/+72How long before that 250GB cap gets dropped? And, then again? And, then again?
They're staring a trend we don't need nor want. - Mejari, on 08/29/2008, -1/+63Some of us use the internet instead of tv
- hwy9nightkid, on 08/29/2008, -1/+62Im sure we'll be joining you soon..
- GeneralFailure0, on 08/29/2008, -0/+61Billy, have you been downloading massive amounts of porn? Have you seen the data usage numbers this month? Don't lie to me, mister. That's it, you're grounded for a YEAR!
- kgdoom, on 08/29/2008, -1/+57If 99% of the people won't be affected, then why are they doing it? Would they really risk pissing off/losing customers simply to remedy that small 1% of people that are consuming more than 250GB?
NO. Use your head. That 1% isn't even causing them problems. Comcast is doing this now so it is already policy when people DO start consuming more that 250GB. Comcast knows that the future of the Internet is rich media like audio/video. In 3 years, that 99% will be more like 80%... in 6 years, 50% etc. Then we're all ***** and paying out the ass for "premium" plans because we can't live without it.
BANDWIDTH IS THE NEW OIL. - raydeen, on 08/29/2008, -1/+51Back in the day, Everquest sent about 3 megs per hour and received about 1 meg per hour. Those values might have gone up by now with the newer games but not by too much I'd expect.
- jeffsiler, on 08/28/2008, -7/+56Time to switch back to DSL :(
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -20/+66Well, well, what have we got here, a Ron Paul supporter who wants the federal government to intervene on free market, and to regulate private businesses.
- Heggy, on 08/28/2008, -11/+57In fairness, that's a reasonable cap. Here in Ireland, most of the providers have a cap, and it's not even a reasonable cap like that, my 2MB line (which is decent round here) is capped to 20GB It's still really hard to go over that unless a download about 15 or 20 movies.
- djtyrant, on 08/28/2008, -4/+49Hmmm, I wonder how many customers they will lose over this.
- Clbck, on 08/29/2008, -0/+42Australia is years behind everywhere else when it comes to ISP's.
- EtherGnat, on 08/29/2008, -3/+44"I'm pretty sure they are going to lose alot of business if not."
I hate Comcast with a passion, but this isn't going to affect their business. At most this will concern 1% of their customers, 250GB is a lot (for the moment). I've done some pretty heavy downloading at times and I doubt I've ever reached that mark.
At least they're telling people what the damn limit is now. I much prefer that to the days of kicking people off for violating some nebulous unknown limit on their "unlimited" plan. - Jeffler, on 08/29/2008, -2/+41Canada, you get either 60gb (bell) or 80 (rogers). Oh, and 30kb/s torrents, only two real companies, then you get your cell phone and you have one GSM provider and two CDMA's that are working to push past Kazakhstan as the #1 most expensive mobile data country in the world, add incoming text charges, and more. Your home phone is bell or rogers, cell bell rogers or telus (Virgin uses bell resources, Koodo owned by Telus, Solo by Bell, Fido by Rogers), internet bell or rogers. Everyone else is irrelevent and the government allows it.
Quit bitching, USA. - themacboy, on 08/29/2008, -3/+42Here in Australia, 250gb a month would be a god send! I am currently capped at 25gb (nope, I didn't forget to put another zero there)
- th3heretic, on 08/29/2008, -4/+42Playing 5 hours a day on TF2 = ~8gb a month.
- MaskedMuffin12, on 08/29/2008, -3/+40What the *****, stop taking things so seriously.
- diggermania, on 08/28/2008, -5/+42they better implement GB rollovers month to month... sheeeoooo
- cultist667, on 08/29/2008, -3/+38Wait till they lower it as time goes by. Five years from now we will be paying out the ass. Wait til they get around to putting these limits on cable tv service. Charge you by the hour instead of flat monthly.
- jondayz, on 08/29/2008, -3/+37I dugg you up simply for the EQ reference. Bravo.
- hwy9nightkid, on 08/29/2008, -0/+34who wants milky Bytes anyway??
Those are perfectly good Gigabytes!! - KnightMareInc, on 08/29/2008, -2/+35Bandwidth caps will do nothing to prevent network saturation during peak times.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+33Well lucky for me that I'm my admin, I guess.
fail.... - rheaume, on 08/29/2008, -11/+44Go outside man
- trejrco, on 08/29/2008, -0/+32(cough) FiOS (cough)
- djtyrant, on 08/28/2008, -0/+29That there-in is the problem :/
- Ashcan, on 08/29/2008, -1/+29@vtnerd
Comcast squashing "any possibility of internet TV by virtue of their bandwidth cap" is exactly Comcast's plan. I'm fairly certain it's also in the future plans of most all other cable companies that double as an ISP. They don't want the competition. - sirbeta, on 08/29/2008, -9/+37250GB? That's pretty good, all things considered. I don't like usage caps and am currently unaffected by one myself but if I ended up with a cap that big, I'd still probably never hit it.
- vtnerd, on 08/29/2008, -6/+33@EtherGnat
I probably use less than 10GB of bandwidth a month but I plan to leave Comcast immediately unless they a) give me a permanent waiver on the download cap or b) cut my monthly payment in half.
It's the principle of their actions, not how much bandwidth I actually use. If people quietly go along with this limit it will turn into a 200GB limit, then a 100GB limit and pretty soon Comcast will have squashed any possibility of internet TV by virtue of their bandwidth cap. No thanks, I'll take my business elsewhere. - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -9/+36250GB is godly. To get that much here you'd be paying $300/month+ for internet alone.
***** Americans don't know how sweet they have it. - puscifer919, on 08/29/2008, -2/+27Exactly. It's not that 250GB isn't enough for most of us, it's the speculation that this is only the beginning. If Comcast put into effect a policy that capped it's users usage levels at, say, 40-60GB, people would be pissed. However, if they start at 250GB and gradually work down to that range, they might actually get away with it.
I think it's *****, personally. I don't want to have to even think about how much data I download from the internet, regardless of where the cap stands. - darkstar949, on 08/29/2008, -4/+29RTFA - they are talking about total bandwidth for the month not instantaneous bandwidth - I would like to know where I could get 250 Gbps.
