- m3mn0n, on 02/17/2008, -11/+247What a horrible article. It didn't even link to a source correctly.
From: http://www.techtree.com/India/News/Toshiba_to_With ...
"A Kyodo News Agency report said (quoting unidentified sources) that Toshiba is reviewing its operations, and will decide later on the exact time of withdrawal of the HD DVD format -- depending on US demand for its HD DVD products, among other factors. "
Unidentified sources? Up for review? Decide later? No press release? How the hell is this "official"?
Buried. - geekchic, on 02/17/2008, -6/+112Is there a trade body which can state that "its official" when making claims like this - or is the headline just journalistic license?

- HairyGrapeNuts, on 02/17/2008, -4/+58Bro...how many more "IT'S OFFICIAL" stories are we going to get?
- Ajajadude, on 02/17/2008, -0/+43You have to be insanely retarded for buying one within the past 2-3 months or so.
- Jonmad17, on 02/17/2008, -9/+45Buried. Not only has the story made the front page already through Gizmodo (i think) but the headline is false. It's speculation not fact.
- ZippyV, on 02/17/2008, -3/+38Not so fast: Microsoft receives license money from Blu Ray too. They didn't bet on one horse.
- schoate09, on 02/17/2008, -1/+33Don't digg him down, he's right. Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD video use AVC-1, which is Microsoft's codec.
- GhostWithToast, on 02/17/2008, -31/+63I'm looking forward to Sony controlling everything about they way we watch HD content in the future. Yaay.
- Deodrus, on 02/17/2008, -1/+31sucks to be you.
- arcooke, on 02/17/2008, -3/+32This is why I don't blow money on brand new technology. Same sort of thing happened with those PhysX cards for computers.. everyone thought they would be the new big thing in gaming and still there's only a handful of games that support it.
When something new like this comes out.. give it time to settle in. - CraigCarlyle, on 02/17/2008, -9/+36http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Associat ...

- clinko, on 02/17/2008, -3/+26IT'S OFFICIAL, more comments mocking "IT'S OFFICIAL" to come:
- dyranios2, on 02/17/2008, -5/+27lol it's not official though is it!? Toshiba haven't actually said this (though don't get me wrong I'm sure that'll change within the next 72 hours).
- jasonh1234, on 02/17/2008, -3/+22Don't most people learn in High School the penalties for not doing any research?
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 02/17/2008, -5/+20Your move, Microsoft.
Blu-ray for the 360, please. - Sarki, on 02/17/2008, -15/+29Sorry, it's not "Official," so I'm burying this.
- inactive, on 02/17/2008, -9/+22BLUWNED
- hexydes, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12Yeah, you should also tell him that in a month or two, the entire catalog of 500 or so HD-DVD titles will be available for under $5 each, while the catalog of Blu-Ray titles (at present still only about 500 or so) are around $30 each.
- BattleScars, on 02/17/2008, -1/+13When they are practically paying you to take the damn things, that should set off some alarm bells.
- nzezelj89, on 02/17/2008, -2/+14Dugg you for a better source :-)
- mynameisrobert, on 02/17/2008, -3/+14BD might have beaten HD (not a hard thing to do if you're willing to spend a billion or two) but it will be a real challenge for it to beat DVD, which is the real threat to HiDef media. If it cannot knock out DVD in three years then it fails, just like SACD.
I own both, invested little, and still lean towards DVD as I have little faith Blu or Red would dominate. - johnlandes, on 02/17/2008, -0/+11Did you also shred and burn the receipt
Return it (asuming you also didnt get it from Best Buy) - TripinVA, on 02/17/2008, -1/+12Toshiba has stopped allowing custom-ordered laptops to contain HDDVD-ROM drives, despite pushing them hard ("just 199.10 more!") just weeks ago. I'd say HD-DVD is done.
- ninjakoala, on 02/17/2008, -2/+12In the meanwhile they'll make BD+ bite much harder o/
Since the consumer friendly format didn't win I'll just skip it alltogether. - bdbr, on 02/17/2008, -2/+11Its funny how so many Diggers abhor the "its good enough" concept when it applies to DVD, but are probably listening to MP3s while they digg you down!
- inactive, on 02/17/2008, -6/+15For BD to win, It needs to be successful. So while HD-DVD has given up, BD is not yet successful. When plain old DVD's are being discontinued in favor of BD, then I think you can declare victory. But that evenuality is still far from certainty.
- HyperJack, on 02/17/2008, -0/+9I love Blu ray and everything. But by the time HD DVD is actually confirmed dead, there are going to be more nails in the coffin than wood!
- EricZBA, on 02/17/2008, -1/+10The first rule of Usenet is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT USENET
- YourMaster, on 02/17/2008, -1/+10Sony has more to do with Blu-Ray than Microsoft has to do with HD-DVD.
- indiekiduk, on 02/17/2008, -5/+14Actually, officially Usenet already won.
- WhereAmI, on 02/17/2008, -6/+14Just don't bother. Let them think Sony is out to get them. Its that 1/4 of all Americans are retarded coming into play.
- thatsmyaibo, on 02/17/2008, -0/+8I bought a PS3 at launch and the Blu-ray feature was just an added bonus. I would have never chosen a side if it wasn't already in my house. Sony may have 'Trojan Horse'd' it into my house but at least I didn't have to waste money on a stand alone player.
- inactive, on 02/17/2008, -0/+8I think DVD's will be around for a lot longer.
- blackjack75, on 02/17/2008, -0/+8Officially none.
- puddpunk, on 02/17/2008, -1/+9Don't try and reason with him - he trolls all Blu-ray/HD-DVD stories with such garbage.
- RockinRoel, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7VC-1? I thought it would be H.264.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disk
I see, they're both supported. - inactive, on 02/17/2008, -2/+9Sony's first time was 3.5 inch floppies like 20 years ago. Sony had many successful formats you twit
- str1fe, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7But it's a hell of a lot easier to say than HD-DVD
- Darkhacker, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7I honestly thought that DVDs would be around a lot longer and that flash would replace them. This might be a stupid reason, but I'd actually prefer flash cards because they are more sturdy and you don't have to worry about scratching them.
- hexydes, on 02/17/2008, -2/+9Agreed. I don't get why people are so happy that the format that has players that cost three times as much, discs that cost twice as much, who paid for the studios much more to side with their anti-consumer/pro-industry format, and has much heavier DRM, is likely going to "win" the format war. They are all anticipating a price drop within a year, but they could have had an HD format for less than that price a month ago, at the same quality.
I will say one thing, Sony finally pulled off a marketing campaign that allowed them to convince the masses that what was not in their best interest is what they should be excited about. Good for them; bad for the consumer. The only consolation is, it is very likely that Sony will use the win to keep prices artificially inflated for a year or two, which will likely slow the adoption of the format greatly, which should allow just enough time for a few key players to start making downloadable, true HD content available, and then be accepted as the true next-gen HD format. - Sniper, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7Why is this buried as inaccurate? Are HD-DVD supports that much in denial?
- sb07, on 02/17/2008, -2/+8this is ridiculously unofficial
- wilf_brim, on 02/17/2008, -2/+8Because Toshiba hasn't offiicially confirmed. Once Toshiba officially throws in the towel we can officially call time of death. Right now we are still on death watch.
- zoomtechtv, on 02/17/2008, -4/+10This news is all over the net. I saw it on TV and on IGN. wait 48 to 72 hours Toshiba will come out and say they are dropping HD-DVD.
- hexydes, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6Awesome, as soon as they do, I'll buy up the entire HD-DVD catalog for $100. That should keep me plenty busy for the next year or two, until HD downloadable content catches traction. 1TB drives should be under $100 by that point, and I'll just rip my HD-DVD's to that drive, coupled with the new HD downloads, and I'll be well on my way.
Maybe a few years after that, you'll be able to get a Blu-Ray player for under $150. - BattleScars, on 02/17/2008, -2/+8***** that. I ain't waiting six hours for a HD movie to download.
- deevay, on 02/17/2008, -5/+10B-B-B-B-B-***** you
- tba2287, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5True. When DVD came out in 1997, consumers had a noticeable upgrade from VHS. No more ruined tape or having to rewind. In this case, the transition will be more gradual, since most people have cable or satellite, and don't have an incentive to replace their TV sets until 2012, when the FCC will no longer force the companies to carry analog signals. Since it will take a while for bandwidth capacity to get the point where 1080p downloads are viable, Blu-Ray will probably have a good 10 years before 10-20 GB files can be downloaded within 5-10 minutes.
