Just the opposite. If you were even slightly informed you'd already know that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"So can we expect Google to overheat and crash more often now?

are you stupid? AMD's run way cooler. the new stock heatsinks on the AMD's are really good too.

The older AMDs like many of the high end Athlon XPs at the time I bought them run hot. Mine is a bit of a pain.
However, back on Superbowl Weekend, I was told this would likely happen. Intel sold a large number of processors in the past to google that would slow down when reaching high temps and never basically get stuck operating lower than they should. This slowed things down for them drastically. I am guessing it pissed them off. I got all of this from an Intel employee. - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Also last I checked (from a book published in 2005) Google claimed to have 100,000 servers, either this guy has a dodgy source or Google suddenly bought a lot more servers."
Google is alway dodgy about any specific information. I've seen the 100k number in some stories, and 10k in a story from 2001. According to the presentation I went to, it was actually closer to 250k. I tend to believe what I heard directly from the former google employee who was the head of their network operations. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1And thirdly (after reading the comments) anyone who believes that AMDs are worse than Intels obviously doesn't know much. Intel is popular because CEOs and company execs like to see 'Intel Inside' (i know this is now longer used) plastered on everything instead of AMD. My old AMD Athlon XP 2800 works fantastically without a problem.
- fuelvolts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1diggman:
what's wrong with a little competition? BTW, AMD is an American company - roots in Austin, TX (along with Dell). I own both AMD 64 Opteron 165 and intel D, I believe the AMD to be the quieter/cooler of the two (not to mention more powerful).
But, I will give the laptop crown to intel though
Servers=AMD ftw (from experience) - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I like the comment that Google has more than 200k servers more than anything.
I want his source for his number."
I've heard this first hand from google employee #18...or something like that, Jim Reese. He's the guy who scaled them up to that many number of machines, and also designed the custom racks that are used to hold them, as well as the procedures for maintaining such a large amount of hardware. - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because Google owns over 200,000 servers, and while they are not replacing they are a huge purchaser of server processors.
It also shows that one of the most server intensive websites in the world now trusts AMD over Intel, a choice that if publicised heavily could hurt Intel's traditionally higher general public image. - lludacrisboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bought time. AMD rules over Intel any day . and i love amd alot
LONG LIVE AMD AND GOOGLE!!!! - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great!
I switched to AMD over ten years ago... cheaper and runs faster and better then Intel.
Good to see the leading search engine going to AMD.
Microsoft Search Engine?... LOL thats powered by a bird from the Flintstones... - AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0amd rules.
hats off to google for making the right move, bout time. - kabayashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would be interested to find out if the switch turns out well. This is would be a great case study for AMD if it works well or Intel if not.
- matelot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what the *****, need to register to read
lame, no digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i'm sure the macs with the new intel chips will offset this...
maybe... - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would always look at AMD computers first when buying, since they are always likely cheaper than Intels premium chip.

AMD stock rules. - vlsi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I LOVE IT. Seriously, the mac fans everywhere have been dancing and drinking fine wine with the switch to intel with the :gasp: :claps: CoreDuo and Google the defender of the free world switches to AMD. Its priceless; this needs to be made into one of the priceless ads! rolf; and here the mac fans are to give their spin on it... :all smiles here:
- vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0According to Google each server is replaced every 3-5 years because they overheat, stop working etc.
Also last I checked (from a book published in 2005) Google claimed to have 100,000 servers, either this guy has a dodgy source or Google suddenly bought a lot more servers. - nano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Big deal. MSN Search has been running Opterons all along
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Smart choice Google.
- deafedison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of, course they are...Who wants the chip that's in "Dull Little Boxes" doing "Dull Little Tasks"?
(Nice promo Intel) - cebbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been very satisfied with AMD in the past few yeras. the K-6 stunk (I had one), but they have drastically improved since then. Also funny how Intel adopted AMD's AMD64 instruction set...
- Badboy29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google finally switches to the best... DIE PENTIUM!
- techmaster7b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, now Google is going to corrupt AMD. Fight back AMD, fight back before it is too late.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's actually a smart move for Google. Google's model dictates that they have a LOT of cheaper hardware vs. less, more powerful hardware. For a lot of sites, this just isn't an option, but for Google, it is THE option.
This also might be Google futureproofing their business, as 64-bit servers are neccesary for high-memory density machines, and PageRank works a lot better when you've got a lot more memory for the database to reside in.
My only concern is the same concern that exists with the Pentium 4 hardware they're likely replacing/upgrading; they've gotta be paying powerbills out the ass, both in cooling and in powering these chips (even at a typical load average of 110W, you're looking at four times the amount of power the old P3s used, and roughly 3 times the power of the new Core chips). Still, the Core chips aren't an option for servers yet (no 64-bit, slower FSB, no integrated memory controller), but Intel might up the ante soon enough.
Oh how I LOVE competition! - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lots of people are going amd. We'll see how good they can become in the next year or two.
- stevets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Intel is a great American company. Stop rooting for AMD."
And AMD isn't? What kind of a comment is that? They are both American companies. And they both manufacture the majority of their processors overseas. Ever check the top of an Intel CPU? Costa Rica ring a bell?
On another note I am glad to see that more companies are beginning to realize the advantages of using AMD processors. The performance per watt is much better than Intel's offerings, and has been for some time now. - paulcooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Most productive and very educated" oh dear, someone is a little ignorant aren't we.
If this was true, then American corporations wouldn't continue to outsource nearly all their manufacturing (and anything else they can) overseas, why would they if the most productive workers were at home?
Your statement has nothing to back it up. - blinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's their source article (once you go back up the tree): http://www.smartmoney.com/bn/ON/index.cfm?story=ON-20060302-000690-0837
The source for that article is an analyst from Morgan Stanley. It's not "official" at all. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most of Google's "servers" commodity boxes? IE desktop-style machines in a Beowolf Cluster setup? It's not like they have 200K Proliants out there.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"- Intel Corp.'s Itanium chip for running computer servers hasn't come to close to achieving the kind of sales numbers it was expected to make.
Now Hewlett-Packard Co. is lending its clout in a joint effort with Intel aimed at shoring up acceptance of the technology, which was developed for the worldwide business-computing market.
Sun Microsystems Inc. an H-P rival, was quick to criticize the company's continued involvement with Itanium.
"H-P's Itanium event this week reminds me of the old line 'trying to put lipstick on a pig,' said Larry Singer, senior vice president and strategic insights officer. "Let's get real. H-P is in a bind, committed to forcing its customers to move to an unpopular architecture."
Intel has also seen more pressure in the server market from rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc particularly with its Opteron chip line. H-P even offers servers running on AMD processors, and Hurd told Goldman Sachs, "AMD clearly has had pockets of performance that have been advantageous.
Whats the name of that thing again? Eye-Tay Neyum? - jiggie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats great, People will finally realize that AMD is way ahead of intel in technology. Too bad AMD does not do commercials like intel do
- wampl3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"For all you Yankees out there....this isn't good. Intel is a great American company. Stop rooting for AMD."
Why? AMD is an American company too, and right now they happen to have the best server chips on the market. The Opteron rocks and AMD has really been pushing the industry the past couple of years. Competition is good for us.
And, what's so special about Intel? - shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"How is this a deal?"
FTA: "Shares of Advanced Micro rose $1.40 to $40.07."
Cool anyways, should help their computers run on lower power since AMDs put out less heat and therefore use less power. I think I'm going to wait just a little while before going dual core with AMD. - GeonRebirth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not a deal in any way, lmao but decent article, no digg
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally! Now how long for Macs and Dell and all the other companies to make AMD computers? Intel is definitely very advanced, but they aren't as efficient and fast as AMD. Basically they come up with some good ideas and then make crappy chips out of them. AMD gets the idea a little later, but manage to expand it to a point where it is useful and amazingly fast.
- TellarHK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my AMD chips. My old Athlons, a 2400+ and then a 3000+ were great for the price, the motherboards were decent and inexpensive, and they ran well enough that my friend with a P4 3.2Ghz box really didn't make me feel jealous at all. Then I picked up an Athlon 64 3200+ with the new Venice core that does SSE3, and I feel just fine. And my CPU was only $160.
The only problem I had was heat with the -old- Athlon stock cooler. It was okay for mild to moderate tasks, but anything intensive kicked the heat into rapid-rise and shutdown after a short while. So I picked up another heatsink and fan, haven't gotten above 41C yet. I actually blame the thermal paste I was using, now. Some of the cheap AS5 clone from Best Buy. With this, I used the grease from Zalman. - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, the 200k server number is fishy. I've often heard the 100K number, sometimes as the number of CPUs and sometimes as the number of servers. My guess is that he confused 200k CPU's with the number of servers. Google mostly uses dual processor boxes, so i'm thinking it's 100K servers w/ 200K cpus
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will be a nice boost for AMD. :)
- eTron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad to hear it. :) I like my Athlon64 X2 4400+. Never have any problems with it. On the server side I'm sure they are just as good.
- rakig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the AMD Site:
"Founded in 1969 and based in Sunnyvale, California, AMD provides microprocessors, Flash memory devices, and silicon-based solutions for our customers in the communications and computer industries worldwide."
Hmm. American company?, i think so.
There is nothing wrong with a little competition, AMD is just winning this round (and the last one.. and the one before that... and probably the next one, but who's counting ;))
And from the 'reports', analysts views, and former employee leaks, google runs a giant cluster of desktop style hardware instead of server class hardware as its cheaper to replace/repair. I've heard numbers ranging from 20k, 80k, 100k and 250k servers, but I guess we'll never really know. Switching to AMD with their current advantages (less power, less heat, less cost..) is a good idea.
and I'm not an AMD fanboy, i actually have Intels at home. But i am willing to recognize a better product when i see it. - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've always wondered how much google spends on electricity used by their in-house computers (includes all servers, workstations) per day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"But, I will give the laptop crown to intel though"
Yeah, but only because of their shady backdoor deals with sony, dell, gateweay, etc. That's why chipzilla is being sued by AMD. By the way, AMD's modern processors have outperformed Intel's in pretty much every aspect, from power consumption, to heat dissipation, to noise generation, performance, and not to mention price. - t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn i wish i hadn't shorted on that AMD stock
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will be interesting to see what if anything Paul Otellini does. I like AMD, but Intel has an enormous manufacturing edge. AMD should have tried harder to lure Apple.
