- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Great article and I agree, moving out to cooler areas would be an excellent way to cut down on cooling costs.
- burnerz, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5The article is interesting. You don't normally hear about things like this. Locating data centres in Iceland could save millions of dollars. I find it strange however that Iceland are sacrificing their landscape for data centres. It must be worth it in financial gains.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Nice article. The standalone air chillers they use in the data centers are friggin sweet!
- TheNakedChef, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4Very interesting and timely article, since it's something that the company I work for is struggling with. Right now we are looking at migrating old legacy systems (and by old, I mean ancient) onto more powerful computers with lots of Virtual Machines setup. Interesting times ahead.
- aserer511, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5only one solution: invade the north pole and make it the world's largest server farm!

- spammishking, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2what the hell does this have to do...
- Sharky35, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3Pic of dude who "Pioneered multi core chips that run cooler and Slower"? Are you kidding me?
This just in: Speed = Heat - hiteshsharma, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Yes but that can just be a temporary solution.
The problem of heating would remain as long we are using the Semiconductor technology. The future would belong to those who can come up with some new Computing technology. Optical Computing for instance. - Gm7Cadd9, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1The hot tub is too hot!!! I'm not gonna fly down here anymore!!!! It's not funny, the HOT TUB IS TOO HOT!
- zip000, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2(random thought that just occurred to me, so possibly completely ridiculous)
Could we - at some point - locate data centers in space so that heat wouldn't be such a problem? Obviously there are a great number of problems with that - cost of putting it there, keeping it shielded from direct sun, insuring that everything in it can be adjusted and repaired from Earth, etc.
/random thought. - heffsta, on 07/23/2008, -2/+3Milk was a bad choice
- diggdallas, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1***** you! My 2 friends died in a hot tub. BURN IN HELL, *****.
- aserer511, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Santa can be demoted to IT personnel
- Tezdoll, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1we just bought a 4 ton AC unit for our small NOC.
- zip000, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Yeah, that's what I was curious about - would heat dissipate faster in the vacuum of space or in a fairly cold place (e.g. Iceland) here on Earth.
I'm just not sure about the thermal dynamics (or whatever) of heat dissipation in vacuum. - zantos420, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1and beat up santa! yeah!
- GeneralFailure0, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1It's so easy to completely write off ideas you don't like. Since you brought it up, may I ask what you are basing your disagreement on?

- GeneralFailure0, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Digg has an images section. It was added quite awhile ago.

- Pufflosz, on 07/23/2008, -3/+3It's too damn hot for a penguin to be just walkin' around. I gotta send you back to the South Pole.
- Nyvhek, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0You already mentioned keeping it shielded from direct sun, but I think that's just part of a bigger issue - there's no air to dissipate the heat into (unless you're talking about putting a data center on Mars or something) and I think having to radiate it all instead would be troublesome.
- mentor972, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1Buried. Wrong Topic.

I was pleasantly surprised - CaptainSponge, on 07/23/2008, -7/+3Datacenters should go carbon neutral. Pay for carbon offsets of electricity that is used.
