- 1337squirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I'm sorry, as much as you hate these people for their insensitive comments on various Kim family stories, your solution is not appropriate to the Digg system and community. Freedom of speech is a right I feel that Digg attempts to promote and protect. While you don't LIKE what they say, their right to say it should remain on Digg. Besides, that's what the Digg/bury system is all about; the majority will Digg down their comments. And the comments filter takes care of the rest.
I really hope you don't think your 'moral high ground' justifies a blacklist of Digg users. What's the next step, if you succeed blacklisting these folks? Blocking folks who bury your submissions? I'm sure just about anyone could write up a 'justification' why it would be acceptable to do such a thing.
Like glidude alluded to, attempts to 'moralize' or moderate Digg will just lead another version of Slashdot. And we all know we don't want that. And just plain out pleading with others to 'get along' and 'be nice' just brings out the trolls like blood in the water. So just get over it, and get on with your life. - gildude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I don't know anything about those particular users, but I would agree it is time for a cleanup. Almost every comments section has people posting things like "you're an idiot" (or even "your an idiot" which I guess proves who really is one. There are so many comments that are just people dumping on each other.
I don't think that all comments need to be "+1 insightful" or anything to be good, but let's stop the harping on each other and the "apple sucks", "windoze sucks", "GNU/Linux blows", and "you're an idiot" comments. - fsjonsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Trolls-
Pissing off internet users since 1990. - stevecole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Uh, yeah -- censorship. That'll make digg a better site.
- bacchus101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Buried- Pretentious
- maffiou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yep, not sure organising vigilantes is the way to go
Personally I'm not blocking anyone, just so I can contribute to the burying... Digg is self regulated, a guy makes a stupid comment, he gets buried...
It could be relevant though, to see how someone's comments are rated globally (an aggregate of all their comment scores) and then setup a threshold in your own profile to filter the the professionnal trollers out...
I'll digg you up because I think the problem is relevant... Just not quite sure about your solution... - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What actually happens when you block a user? Do you not see their comments?
Because I'm just thinking, if I block an irritating user and then go to another story and see a comment that's a devastating and funny putdown that appears to be replying to nobody because I blocked the user it was a reply to, I'm sort of missing out... - sqlsamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think a nice feature would be a user exclusion list that each digg user could manage for themselves... that way if they didnt want to see submissions by certain users it would filter them out.
- Yorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I got a solution, someone create a digg without the comments. Problem solved. I've wanted just a basic solution like this for a long time, but I guess that's what RSS feeds are for.
- AdamWeeden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@billpoly
Respectfully, I must disagree. I find the comments at Slashdot to be, on the whole, much more intelligent than here. - machine117, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And what exactly is it about slashdot that makes it below digg?
As a reader of both, I can assure you that while slashdot doesn't give a poop about digg, a lot of digg users have some sort of inferiority complex where they feel like they must make a point on why they're so much better than slashdot. - billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That feature exists. Right next to the user's name is a circle with a line through it. Click that, and you'll block that user forever. Everyone I listed is already blocked for me.
- outofyourmind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Couldn't agree more. You can listen to him or ignore him. That's your choice and he makes that perfectly clear. I'm listening to him because I know he's right.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@AdamWeeden-
I'll have to give Slashdot another chance given your assessment. Thanks for the constructive input. - billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Are you suggesting that Digg has not devolved into Slashdot already? Digg, as it stands today, is pretty much "Slashdot 2.0" at this point. Because of the scope, popularity, and usability of Digg, in my opinion it is currently worse than Slashdot at it's lowest point.
I have no "next step". I am simply posting a list of users who I blocked - users whose comments were already heavily dugg down. Their comments are public for all to see. Others can use my list as a guide to who to avoid or ignore on Digg, or simply ignore it. Either way is fine with me.
Blocking users who bury my submissions couldn't be further from my intent. I suggest you read my words as they are written and not read into them. I actually look forward to intelligent debate from other users. I could very well be wrong in concept and/or in approach, and a productive discussion amongst people with differing points of view can be very valuable.
Take some time to review the comments made by some of the users on my list. I only ask that you gather information and formulate an informed opinion before judging. - Rodalli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You're hurt and angry because of the nature of the situation. These "bad" Digg users leaving "inappropriate" comments on stories that you feel passionately about. That's understandable because it's human to feel that way.
But it's also causing you to retaliate in an illogical manner that is detrimental to the Digg community and doesn't do a damn thing to better the Kim family's situation, or anyone else's for that matter.
In a free world, or any open forum, there will always be people that do or say things that would be considered wrong by most. And sometimes it can seem like doing nothing hurtful in response is a show of a cowardice. However, I find that a person's incorrect reaction to aggressive force is often the only thing that empowers that force.
In short, you're only giving them what they wanted when they commented on the story - your undivided attention. I'd even wager to say it's not worth it to bury the foolish comments. You do them much more a service by recognizing that they've posted something hurtful than if you had scrolled on, ignoring the comment all together. - hcetrepus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Taking it all way to serious. Go for a hike, see a ballgame, or just switch to decaff.
- tonage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You mean get rid of users that post stories that waste out time like this one?
- maguirer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"[D]evolved into Slashdot..."
You're funny. - Churnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A change is necessary if Digg wants to salvage any credibility it has left. It's already lost quite a bit due to immature members and duplicate posts. To think that an online forum can survive without any moderation is parallel to thinking that a Windows machine can survive without any antivirus/antispyware software.
- cameron074, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2really, it isn't like if you banned all those accounts the users wouldn't be able to create new ones. I wish there was something like a tracker on the front page that would allow you to see whose comments were being dugg down the most. I think that would get more attention that flat out banning them.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You're absolutely correct, and that's a good idea. Kind of like a real-time version of this list for all to see every time they open Digg.
- Rodalli, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9Your attempt to drag religious world views into an already pointless proposal is completely unappreciated.
- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The idiot left me of the list.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@b3mus3d-
I have noticed that if you block a user and they started a thread, then the entire thread disappears from the comments. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because often the ensuing thread is a back and forth between the user who posted a pointless or hateful comment and the users who take offense.
But you are correct regarding what happens when you block a user. If they are part of a thread then their comments will not appear. Responses will appear to be responding to nobody. - billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Please feel free to block me if you disagree with my take.
- bhavi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's not about blocking users.
Duplicate stories are the worst. Bear in mind my complete sympathy is with the Kim family, but having 6 stories on slightly different links is totally unnecessary. Instead , have one story and as comments give similiar links. This also helps survive the digg effect.
So yeah, it IS time to clean up digg; just differently to what the blog suggests. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Would not think of blocking anyone. That's what Digging down is for.
- tonage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yea, glad you have now given me permission to do that. Thanks. I was awaiting your approval before I did it.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@machine117-
You're probably right. I was referring mostly to the quality of the comments. Slashdot is notorious for trolls and comment flame wars. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Barring Anti-x users is absolutely ridiculous. It's anti-matter to what Digg was created for.
- Cardiakke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Aaah! The Liberal mind in action.
Imagine billpoly with power.....How long before the "re-education camps" would open.....All those people with "dissident ideas", "socially dangerous elements", "anti-social elements".... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1For some reason people are trying to ban my post about James Kim.
It's really odd.
http://digg.com/world_news/BREAKING_NEWS_JAMES_KIM_FOUND_2 - cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7Ok, let's make a deal: We get rid of the anti-christians on digg and the pro-christians in real life!
- LinuxSucks, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4woohoo my old account made the list!
ps james kim was eated. - kelly, on 10/12/2007, -21/+9I think we would be fine to get rid of a single group:
The anti Christian trolls.
Since digg has such a disproportionate number of people that fill this category as compared to the real world, I fear that there were only be about 10 people left.

What is Digg?
