- ZephyrNinety, on 06/20/2008, -3/+43I never liked Yahoo much to begin with really
- XternalHD, on 06/20/2008, -1/+31Cool, Ill keep using Google.
- magnoliasouth, on 06/20/2008, -0/+23Nick, one of the developers, is also leaving... tomorrow in fact. He announced this in the Yahoo Groups (support) for del.icio.us. Unlike Joshua, Nick said, "It is not related to Joshua’s decision to leave, but we are both moving on to the next chapters in our professional lives.... My decision to leave has nothing to do with my belief in Delicious, but due to a professional opportunity that I couldn’t pass up." It is noted that in the TechCrunch article, Joshua said the opposite, "I was largely sidelined by the decisions of my management. So that was mostly the result rather than the cause..."
Either way, something sounds very wrong.
One additional thing that Nick said could be the key, "We fundamentally believe that our value as a business and product is to make the right thing for users and give it away for free." It is curious that he would be sure to mention "free." Does this mean that Yahoo, who is so desperate for capital, is planning on charging customers for this service? It's all speculation right at the moment, but it just seems wrong. - jayadelson, on 06/20/2008, -1/+21Incredible loss for Yahoo!... One of the greatest minds...if not the greatest... they had on staff.
- BXRWXR, on 06/20/2008, -3/+17Looks like it's boohoo for Yahoo.
- ted_hosmann, on 06/20/2008, -1/+10Pick him up for Digg!!
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+8I also heard that key member Kevin Morriston is no longer going to be with Yahoo. Pretty crazy this company is going down the drain.
- bpapa, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7It's pretty sad, I wonder if Flickr and Del.icio.us are even going to be around in 3-5 years. Yahoo is a case study in dumb-assery. No idea why Yang is holding out on stepping down.
- guillebravo6, on 06/20/2008, -1/+7Yahoo is on downfall and this is just pushing them lower! I wonder how many users will quit because of this?
- wellyuk, on 06/20/2008, -0/+6How is this old news? It happened, at most, 24 hours ago. 24 hours ago is NOT old news, even in these modern, dynamic days of the internet tubes. Don't be a prat.
- Quiplash, on 06/20/2008, -1/+7The recent flood of resignations of senior staff at Yahoo! now includes Caterina Fake and Stewart Butterfield, the founders of Flickr, and (as of yesterday), del.icio.us founder Joshua Schachter. Given that Flickr and del.icio.us were the only two parts of Yahoo! that I did use, I figure it's time for me to bail on Yahoo! too. Yahoo!'s customer service was a total joke, especially for their email service, and many Flickr users did express their dismay when they were bought by Yahoo! in 2005. I joined Flickr in February 2004 when it was still a tiny Vancouver startup (when Caterina and Stewart and their small staff were constantly interacting with their earliest users), and have been with it through all the changes that have taken place. I decided to stick it out when Flickr was bought by Yahoo!, but I'm not sticking around any more now that the founders themselves have left.
- KaivenTor, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5So much for Delicious 2.0...
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -1/+6mmmm Yahoo founder.
- bpapa, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4I actually still use it a lot, but only as a place online where I can store my own bookmarks. I don't really use of any of the social or exploratory features.
- MavRevMatt, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4How many people still use Yahoo who are informed about this? Like 2 maybe 3 %. The only people who use Yahoo don't know and don't care. All they know is that their homepage gives them news, search, and email.
- zionKing, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Y! management running something into the ground with bone-headed decisions? The more I learn about Yahoo the more I don't understand why they didn't just fold to Microsoft's bid. The two clearly would have an understanding.
- Reclinatron, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Alexa tracks people who have installed their toolbar.
- benologist, on 06/20/2008, -2/+5Yahoo charges for lots of services.... it would not be at all extraordinary for them to roll out 'premium' options for more of their services.
The list of people leaving Yahoo! has some notable names but it's not exactly a long list... they have some ~14 thousand employees. - kinerry, on 06/20/2008, -3/+6Finally this dinosaur dies
- mozzep, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3there are a few things on yahoo that I like and use regularly that I think are decent if not great products. Delicious, flickr, stocks, messenger (though not the official client), sports. If yahoo does go out of business, which isn't likely given they're making profits recently, you will notice it. Yahoo is one of those sites that you take for granted and hardly realize you're using it.
- Barackalypse, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3I doubt the problem is so much that one guy is leaving as much as it is the underlying conditions that caused him to want to leave. Its not like Josh is to Yahoo as Steve Jobs is to Apple or anything. Hell, I never even knew who he has or who he worked for before this article.
- wellyuk, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3I use it all the time. It's great. I think it's become one of those things where now the hype/fad of delicious is over, people just use it and don't talk about it. Much like the telephone or the TV.
- laserblazer, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3Didn't I tell you guys two months ago to ditch your Yahoo stock?
- plainOldFool, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3Not much of a photo-posting guy myself, but there's always Deviant Art or Picasa.
- osunick, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2Nick here:
MagnoliaSoutherly, you're reading wayyy too much into my email... to my knowledge no one's ever tried to get us to charge for Delicious, I was just trying to point out that we have a great product for free because some folks seem to think that we need to work nights, weekends, and holidays to solve their problems. Which isn't to say we don't, but we do occasionally like the option of spending time with our families and waiting until after the weekend to push out a bug fix. :)
Also, I'm not a developer. I'm was a senior product manager, so calling me a dev is an insult to our developers. :) They're much smarter than I am. - MaxMWood, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Yahoo does suck. I dont understand why Yahoo is number 1 on Alexa.
- sq2shooter, on 06/20/2008, -2/+4Does anyone actually use del.icio.us anymore? Seems like it was a fad for a while but nobody talks about it anymore.
- ryleyleckie, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2moms use yahoo and moms don't care
- skunkman62, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2are you a retard?
- MavRevMatt, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Yeah but he's one of the 30 or so people who've left this past month right? So.
- ernieoporto, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2So, does Google Bookmarks integrate as nicely with Firefox as Delicious does?
- xNarrowSoulx, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Ah! Somebody buy Flickr before they die!
- TeraRealm256, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2time to remove my delicious facebook application....i never used it anyway!
- darkfus, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Remember when Yahoo came out? It was the search engine that you had to submit your site to and people managed the directories by hand. It was old school the day it launched. It was about as antiquated as the web directory printed books they used to sell at Best Buy in the 90's.
Never used them, never will. Goodbye Yahoo, you've long outlived your expiration date and I admire you for that and that lone. - wellyuk, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3You could describe Delicious and Flickr as Yahoo products (as I suppose they are owned by yahoo) but they haven't been in the Yahoo fold for long. They were great well before Yahoo got their grubby mitts on them.
- Atomic1fire, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Brand name value
Yahoo was one of the more popular search engines at one point
A lot of people still use yahoo mail (even though Gmail is by far better) - estacado, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I was just about to buy a flickr pro account. It it a wise decision now?
- Wargasmic, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Lol good, because I ***** hate Yahoo.
- Atomic1fire, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1I don't think yahoo is going to last any longer at this point
I would advise looking for competitors of existing yahoo services - enders, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I actually love Yahoo's fantasy sports applications (their whole sports section isn't bad either). I've used the ones by ESPN or NFL and they just don't touch it.
- javaroast, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1They both stole it from Jonathan Swift.
- YodaJones, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Is there anybody here that actually cares what happens to Yahoo?
- Duositex, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1And here I thought that Julia Child founded delicious.
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I'm not on their payroll.
- HariSeldon10, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Delicious Founder leaving? Was he afraid he would get eaten? Oh, so delicious!
- thegools, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Soon to be said by Yahoo's best friend Jerry..."So you held out for less money."
- xNarrowSoulx, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1It wouldn't be related to your spelling or anything, would it? 'racest', and your own racism, calling them crackers?
- bacon_skoda, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1i used to use delicious but what's the point? it's been quite stale.
flickr? there's a million sites like flickr. don't care.
waste of time looking at stupid pictures.
even youtube, there's now thousands of copy cats. - Kwiter, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2Yahoo WAS my Domain REgistrar, they emailed me that it's about up and will NOW be $34.95 a year. Cancelled and Transferred to Go Daddy, $34.95 for 5 Years! Still propogating thru the web tho , upto 5 days before urbanskinz.com is back :-(
