Can't have 100% leeches, now can we? - inactive, on 09/28/2009, -10/+161***** the RIAA.
- jrm125, on 09/28/2009, -6/+108Canada just gets better and better.
- diskoh, on 09/28/2009, -3/+71Every letter I've gotten from my ISP says to "stop making this file available" and never actually mentions downloading it.
- LostSoul83, on 09/28/2009, -4/+59Do keep in mind that the entertainment industry is STEALING FROM YOU AND I. They use encryption and perpetual copyrights to prevent content from EVER going into the public domain.
- voxpunk88, on 09/28/2009, -3/+43The more I hear about Canada the less I believe that the country even exists. It's too perfect to be real!
- inactive, on 09/28/2009, -3/+35When a record exec winds up dead with "***** the RIAA" scrawled on their chest, i'll hold you responsible!
- tnoy, on 09/28/2009, -1/+30P2P networks are not the only way to download mp3s.
- mparker21311, on 09/28/2009, -2/+30You received more than one letter?
- bmatherlyjr, on 09/28/2009, -3/+31But in case you missed it, it only benefits Canadians in large, not anyone else, if you download from a Canadian while in the states, you are still infringing based on it's present idiotic laws and the RIAA and US Government would have a bone to pick with you.
- breadfred, on 09/28/2009, -1/+27Or just sue the murderer for Copyright, as it is 'YOUR' phrase
- Zippo, on 09/28/2009, -1/+26The RCMP has also stated it has no issue in going after individuals who download music (or anything for that matter) for personal use. The amount of people doing it are far too numerous and the damage is non-existent. It would be a colossal waste of time and resources to do so. What the RCMP *is* doing, however, is going after the people and businesses that are selling pirated works for their own profit - like bootleg DVDs.
Seems like the right thing, if you ask me. - ATL, on 09/28/2009, -0/+24What about CD+R?
- nmffffd9, on 09/28/2009, -5/+29don't upload and you will get banned from private trackers. then you can't download anything now can you? hehe
- LordVance, on 09/28/2009, -1/+24Because torrents (and specifically private trackers) are the only way to download music.
- livevil999, on 09/28/2009, -1/+22Is it legal to buy drugs if you don't sell drugs?
- diskoh, on 09/29/2009, -0/+18I've received tons of them. I pay 250 bucks a month for internet, phone, and cable. They're in no hurry to stop receiving that by disconnecting me. I'd just switch ISPs, what good does that do them?
- filip3311, on 09/28/2009, -6/+24Today, I am proud to be a Canadian!
- falstaff, on 09/28/2009, -1/+18Legally, going after uploaders is more convenient for the RIAA since they can connect directly to filesharers (by downloading the file) without actually looking more like hypocrites by uploading the files themselves and going after the downloaders.
However, since the actual "copy" (which is what copyright law is all about) is created by the downloader, it's far more logical that they should be more liable. Besides, if "making available" is illegal, why are libraries legal? They "make available" books, CDs and movies. If somebody uses that opportunity to create a copy (either by scanning or ripping), is that the library's problem? According to the RIAA, yes.
Basically, the RIAA has turned copyright completely backwards for the sake of convenience, and the Luddite courts in the US have blindly followed along. - jordantneff, on 09/28/2009, -2/+19SEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!
- zadadka, on 09/28/2009, -1/+17The crux of the Copyright argument is "making copies available".
Thus, Uploading is more illegal than downloading.
Clicking a link on a webpage (or in a friends' email) is a legal minefield that works in the downloader's favour...use the argument if in that position. - DivineMonkey, on 09/28/2009, -2/+16Mandatory comment, mandatory digg.
- z0rk, on 09/28/2009, -1/+14i think you missed the point. A vpn server in canada would look like a canadian downloading so would not be subject to american laws. You could then use the private encrypted network to download it from canada to your personal computer without a trace.
- shark72, on 09/28/2009, -0/+12Plus, it's hard to get the horse into the basement.
- plainOldFool, on 09/28/2009, -0/+12Royal with Cheese
- choopie911, on 09/28/2009, -0/+10It's always been legal to download and illegal to upload in Canada. It's why we pay the blank media levy
- kaelyiesta, on 09/28/2009, -0/+10"Can't have 100% leeches, now can we?"
You have no idea how true that is. - Kahldr1s, on 09/28/2009, -0/+10only if you share said drugs with your friends
- Greg2k, on 09/28/2009, -0/+9Depends where exactly you'd be handing them out. But typically it would take you a couple of hours to hand them all out.
- Amadeus2490, on 09/28/2009, -2/+11People complain about the Winters there, but for the past few years Ohio and Upstate New York have gotten more snowfall and colder temperatures than parts of Canada, and everyone in America knows how bad the Winters are in the Midwest, around Chicago and Minnesota. The only problem is that it's basically impossible for a single person to legally move to another country unless you're working for a major company that's sponsoring you; You have to legally work in the country for 7 years before you're eligible for citizenship. If you get fired or laid off any time before this, you can be deported. If you aren't a "valuable asset to the Canadian workforce", then you could try getting a student visa, but those are only valid for 2-4 years. It'd better be a major/school that guarantees job placement after graduation, or you'll have to come back to the US and wait until you can get a job back in Canada. The problem is that if you aren't a citizen, you have to pay out-of-pocket for Canadian health care and (I think) schooling, so basically: You have to have enough money saved up to get by without a stable job for at least a few years, so assuming you want to live over the poverty level, This is about 60-80 thousand dollars divided over 5 years. The move alone costs about $10,000.
tl;dr Moving to Canada is a complicated process that takes about 7-10 years and a hundred thousand dollars. Sadly, it'd be cheaper and easier just to buy the songs you want off of iTunes for a dollar-a-piece. - BrownieMix, on 09/28/2009, -0/+9I'm moving to Canada in two years. I simply cannot wait!
- inactive, on 09/28/2009, -4/+13I'd be happy to pay for music, so long as the artists get their fair cut.
http://digg.com/d314qgD - inactive, on 09/28/2009, -0/+8I had this suspicion we were better. This confirms it!
- alpha88, on 09/28/2009, -0/+8Mid October? Mid April? Sure, maybe the majority. But in the populated areas that's just not true. I live in the GTA and recently we've barely gotten the first snowfall before Christmas, and it has never, ever lasted into April.
- Ne007, on 09/28/2009, -1/+9No, but uploading is how you get caught.
- FJRRulz, on 09/28/2009, -0/+8I don't know, I didn't go into Burger King.
- falser, on 09/28/2009, -1/+9Summer in Ontario lasted from August 18th until Sept 10th. Today is 12C and rainy. And there won't be much sunlight from now until late April. But I have a hell of an MP3 collection to last me through the dark times ahead.
- FJRRulz, on 09/28/2009, -1/+8It breaks down like this, ok: It's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it, and if you're the proprietor of a file sharing website, it's legal to sell it. It's legal to carry it, but that doesn't really matter 'cause get a load of this, all right; if you get stopped by the cops in Canada, it's illegal for them to search you. I mean, that's a right the cops in Canada don't have.
- zadadka, on 09/28/2009, -1/+8It's curious that in one Digg thread you conversely appaud "locking users in" on software use, and in another, denounce Microsoft for "conspiring with the entertainment industry to screw users over" ....
...on which side do you actually go in to bat? - costumemaker, on 09/28/2009, -0/+7...and a glass of beer in a movie theater. I ain't talkin' no paper cup, I mean a glass of beer.
- iBleeedOrange, on 09/28/2009, -2/+9Even when you download you upload to other seeds, granted its only a few kb but its still something they could use against you.
- Philbert, on 09/28/2009, -1/+7I have seen torrents download with 0 upload speed and 0.0 share ratio. It's rare but I've seen it happen.
- ScientistBlah, on 09/28/2009, -7/+13Yeah, Canada definitely sucks for not allowing its citizens to own AK47s. You can still own guns you dumb ***** but just not ridiculous ones that have no use other than killing people.
- creative83, on 09/28/2009, -0/+6It's legal to download in Switzerland. They just say: The user maybe couldn't decide if the source for downloading was legal. So you can download from everywhere you want.
- WalkerDan, on 09/28/2009, -4/+10you shouldn't look at things as black or white..
- killtr0city, on 09/28/2009, -0/+6What do they call the Whopper?
- alpha88, on 09/28/2009, -0/+5wow, I lol'd so hard.
- Lordy1952, on 09/28/2009, -1/+6I need a lawyer to summarize this for me ;-)
- portnoy, on 09/28/2009, -1/+6"We give them temporary sole control of their works in exchange for the works eventually passing to the public."
With "temporary" being defined as "until the end of time" apparently. - portnoy, on 09/28/2009, -0/+5"In short, artists seek to benefit from society, but not contribute back."
Concisely summed up. -
