- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+337I write my rent checks in printed crayon. It keeps my landlord respectfully aware of my slight instabilities.
- NoNom, on 10/12/2007, -7/+231I blame the cursive 'Q'. It's a number 2.
*had to do an image search because I forgot what 'F' and 'T' looked like*
For those that have forgotten:
http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~wh5a/personal/cursive.gif - radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+222I think the only purpose of learning cursive is so kids can develop a written signature, that's the only thing I ever got out of it. Otherwise I'd be signing my name in block letters.
- timxpx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+168being asian, my block and cursive handwriting is perfect by default.
- sscamatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+122On the SAT, after one of the breaks, they make you write a statement in cursive saying that you are really you. Nobody in the classroom knew how so the Procter had to write it on the board for all of us to copy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+127I have no idea whatsoever how to do cursive. It is much too slow, confusing, and in general hard to read. Much more so if you are trying to read someone elses.
Oh, and I sign my name basically Da(scrible scribble scribble) Do(scribble scribble scribble scribble) - thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98Haha, yes I remember that. Then all of the sudden in middle school, after asking about it, the teacher is like "Cursive? No, silly, you don't have to use that." Such a scam :p
- revmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+82yeah, they said the same thing about using pens too...
- cybersaur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73Cursive? Yeah, I have some fonts for that...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+76Cursive is harder to read because everyone's writing style is so unique. On the other hand, if you know how to write in cursive as well as you know how to write in print, you can write a LOT faster in cursive. It eliminates every single pause you take when you lift the pen up off the paper to write the next letter.
When I write for myself, and know that I'll be the only one who'll need to read it, I write in cursive. It's very fast, and I don't have to worry about making things clear. If I'm writing something that's meant to be read by other people, I print my letters just so that others will easily read it. - riah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71I just write the first letter then squiggles that look like cursive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66I still write in cursive, which is funny whenever my classmates ask to borrow my notes...
"I missed lecture yesterday, can I borrow your notes?"
"Yeah, sure."
......
"Uhh....nevermind." - xyphoid, on 10/12/2007, -45/+107They still teach cursive in school? What a waste of time. The majority of signatures are not legible anyways. Cursive is for old people with feather pens that they dip into ink. People, its 2006.
- qmeister, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63Yes, the cursive Q is definitely the culprit...I've never used one and my last name starts with one...nice post
- adidax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+56Palm ruined my handwriting all together. I have a Cursive/Print/Graffiti hybrid that almost nobody can read now.
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53I've just adapted the two together and use elements of both cursive and print to write... its makes it imposible to read if you are not me though, so i always decline to handwrite presentations at work if my teammates want people to be able to read it.
- BigPapi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45We used to get graded on how neat our cursive writing was. It was total BS. Most of the girls were very neat writers and most of the boys were sloppy as hell. At one point I actually thought I was a poor student because I couldn't write neatly, the reality was that I never memorized multiplication tables.
- lmcplatte, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44I took the LSAT last weekend (law school admission test), one of the important days of my life. One of the first things they make you do (before the exam starts) is write out a given disclaimer _in cursive_. I just about tore my exam response sheet because I had to erase so many times. I couldn't make a cursive "I" to save my life, and of course a disclaimer has "I" written about 72 times.
/going back to elementary school - JesusFaction, on 10/12/2007, -7/+44I hated learning cursive
I never use it now - Buga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37I write in a "bastardized" cursive. Some letters are in the proper cursive form while random letters within the same word are written in non-cursive. I've been doing it that way since I can remember. If I find the quickest way to write a word I generally stick with that no matter how poor it looks
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36The only cursive I ever write is my signature, and even that I seem to screw up to no end.
- mistercharlie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40Good riddance!
- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34same when i took it. i finished the SAT with high marks in less time than it took me to write that goddam cursive
- SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I never used cursive writing once it wasn't mandatory.
- diggitydank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31I remember getting to high school and thinking, "Wow, this is so cool. I am allowed to print now!"
- greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37Is cursive handwriting dead?
Yes - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Whenever I try to write in cursive I always start to write in Russian because for four years in high school that was the only language for which I used cursive. I've been meaning to re-teach myself English cursive. Print and typing have ruined me!
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25The thing is, most people cant read cursive very well, and most people write it very sloppy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@lamech
You spell "When" when you try to type "What" in cursive? Wow and I thought I was bad... - Enasni1212, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Yeah, ilyag, I take notes in class in cursive. It's much faster to write that way, although it makes it difficult for me to lend people notes.
That being said, I never forgave my 4th grade teachers for telling me that knowing how to write in cursive was an indispensable skill. - lamech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Cursive in itself may not be faster than the form of print that many people have began using for notes and the like. For instance, you rarely ever see anyone use pure cursive, they mix print and cursive together, some letters are easier to write, (and usually faster) in cursive, while others in print. This leads to a sort of hybrid of the two, and that is the fastest way to write (aside from typing).
example: When typing the word "What" - I may use a cursive 'W' disconnected from a cursive 'h', 'e', then followed by a half cursive 'n' - its mostly a printed 'n' because it only has one hump, but it is connected to the 'e' as in cursive style. - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Kind of pisses you off when you think of all the useful things the 3rd grade teacher could have taught you instead of cursive.
Anyone remember D'nealian?
http://www.dnealian.com/lessons.html - Steveo117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17All I do is write in cursive. And its the bomb.
- zorpscorp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Haha, that reminds me of the time my second grade teacher required a paper to be done "in black ink and in cursive", so I typed it up using a "script" font and printed it out. The next day the teacher accepted it, but all the unfortunate kids who had hand cramps were pretty pissed at me.
- N080dy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Ahh...that took FOREVER to get copied down, as I'm a slow writer as it is. The capitals really got to me. G? S? F? cmon...
- nbx909, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18i don't use cursive because it's hard to read, I only use it for my signature
- macnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14My problem is I can type faster then I can write on paper.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16My handwriting is god awful, I use cursive when I have to write and preferably not look like utter *****, my cursive is legible. When I do use print I use all caps style, probably because that's the clearest way to read (since some people can't read lowercase anymore *or did they ever?*) but honest it takes so long I think printing needs to take the backseat, typing so much faster. They should just teach kids shorthand again and let tablet PCs (of which will probably be in every school at SOME point) decode, that's a skill I wish I had (nevermind that no devices really decode it yet without extensive tooling).
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Joined-up writing? Mine's an illegible scrawl, and I use it every day.
I'll probably be a doctor when I grow up. - stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21I wish I had better cursive.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12In Soviet Russia...
ahh, forget it. - smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13zorpscorp: That's funny you mentioned that. When i was in high school we would have to write 1000 words if we talked to much or disrupted class. The writing could be anything, just as long as it was done, so I used some random text with a cursive font, printed it out on notebook paper and kinda ruffled it up a bit. The teacher even counted the words and didn't notice.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Seriously, whenever I write by hand I print, even though it takes longer. I started doing it in college so I could read my notes better. It's just clearer and easier to read.
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Wow, what a flash-back. Bad memories, but it also reminded me of a more simpler time in my life where I had little arrows showing me how to make my letters.
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Kris Tofer Baker"? Man, did that kid's parents screw him.
- LucasOman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Actually, once you're used to it, cursive is much faster than print because you don't have to pick up your pen nearly as much. I use cursive, myself. I'm 24 and I've used it most of my life. I'm also a programmer, but I find opportunities to write with good ol' fashioned pen and paper.
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12If everyone had good penmanship, then cursive wouldn't be that hard to read. It's only when you get chicken scratching like mine (and I'm 50) that it becomes difficult. But in order to have good penmanship, people have to care about it and be taught, so it will probably keep degrading. However, whenever I do write, I rarely write in anything but cursive because the other way takes too long.
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Why all the cursive hate? I didn't have to use it after 5th grade, and I didn't use it through Middle school, but I picked it up again in High School because, contrary to what you all seem to think for some reason, it's _much_ faster than writing in print. Especially useful on timed writing assessments. I never have to worry about not finishing because my writing speed is holding me back...
- BigPapi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ahh I remember that! I felt completely stupid. Here I was, fresh out of studying day and night for the SAT and I couldn't write a freakin paragraph in cursive. Way to start the exam.
