- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why does google pay people $1 for each firefox referral? I don't think they'll make Opera compete with Firefox. They'll be buying Operas user base and Operas talented programmers and thinkers.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is funny, and so not happening.

In other news, Google acquired David Lee Roth, sparking credibility to reports of another rumored Van Halen reunion. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"a French language blog by Pierre Chappaz (former president of Yahoo! Europe), who quotes sources saying that the acquisition is going down"
Possibly, he is bored and made up a story to get attention.
But hey, it could happen. - mendicant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting. I've used nothing but Opera since the 5.x releases and am quite interested to see what would come of this.
ps. linuxrocks: I'm sure if you went to it you'd find that in terms of speed, Opera still rocks Firefox, even with the new fastcache turned on :D - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Opera is a great browser. It pretty much matches Firefox in terms of reliability, security, and speed.
- jmechy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It will be funny to see alot of the firefox fans that hate opera switch to opera when it becomes "GBrowser". It's amazing that the features and offering it for free still haven't put it as the number 1 browser, but I'm willing to bet that a google branding could finally give it the respect it deserves.
- slemmons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firefox's 3rd party extensions are enough to keep me tied to it versus almost any competition, but Opera is a great browser, and the fastest one I've used.
That being said, i can't really see any point in Google buying Opera. If they want a GBrowser, why not just package up their own custom version of Firefox for free? - alucinor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google wants to push IE's share down. If Google released a re-branded Firefox, a lot of the open source community would scorn both Mozilla and Google. But this way, Google can use their brand to encourage people to download a non-IE browser, and IE's dominance can be hit by a stronger, two-pronged attack, rather than everyone putting everything behind Firefox.
We don't want Firefox or Opera to be ever dominant like IE ... we want diversity with ~standards~. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1God, Mouse Gestures alone win Opera for me. All I have to do is shake the mouse a little to the left or right to go back and forth. Down opens a new tap, up down reloads the page, it really is a time saver for lazy people. I also love how it automatically creates a 10 ten websites list for you and places that along with your bookmarks in a pleasing place. Also if I want to auto login to a site all I have to do is click the login box and right click and drag left, logs me right in.
I think the main reasons I love Opera over Firefox is because its even lighter weight than the fox, its UI is the best hands down, and it has ways to save time on even the simplest tasks. For Ex. Instead of selecting a non hyperlinked URL copy and pasting it into the URL bar, all you have to do is select the URL, right click and hit goto address. Its just little things like that which put opera above the rest. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously doubt it... Doesn't google currently employ the lead firefox developer?
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Opera is a great browser. It pretty much matches Firefox in terms of reliability, security, and speed."
Well, it actually has better security than Firefox ( http://www.secunia.org ) and it's faster than Firefox ( http://howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html ). As for the reliability, well, in my experience it is more reliable than Firefox, and it sure doesn't leak memory like Firefox! - plasticmillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've written up a translation of Pierre's blog entry, along with some commentary (http://digg.com/deals/Is_Google_set_to_acquire_Opera_).
- howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stilzel, not sure I agree with you there :) GMail borrowed heavily from M2, after all, and Opera is known to be the fastest browser.
Other comments:
> the UI is bloated though
You aren't using the latest version then. Opera 8 does not have a bloated UI at all.
> Opera has never been anti-microsoft.
What has Opera been, then, PRO-Microsoft? :)
> I might use Opera if it didn't rely on KDE
It doesn't. - Crispyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera's M2 is a great email client. Using Opera is worth it for smart folders and instant search features alone. (yes i know tbird does this now, but that thing won't remember my MIAP folders, so it's pretty useless)
- plasticmillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oops, here's the correct link: http://www.allpeers.com/blog/2005/12/15/the-opera-hypothesis/.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera is a good browser, but it's currently no match to firefox in terms of both UI and extensibility. Hopefully, this will change when google buys it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well Opera 9 will feature widgets using Opera's Merlin engine. Google announced Widgets just now too...
- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Opera because it's the smallest, fastest browser I've ever used that actually works (and by "works", I mean "works in 2005," i.e. "supports stuff like Ajax". Otherwise I'd still be using lynx or something.) It makes Firefox, IE, and even Galeon and Konqueror look like pigs.
However, except on mobile devices, I use Firefox, because as proprietary software, Opera doesn't come with my OS (ironic, huh?) and Firefox has a ton of extensions I've come to rely on that Opera doesn't have.
Digg anyway. - originalG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever. Opera is the best browser bar none. Anyone think FF is better is nuts. Yeah of course Google supports firefox. MS is their biggest competitor. But having their own browser in their pocket is a bonus.
Doesnt anyone else see whats happening. Google is poising themselves to take on MS in every facet they can. They have to break MS grip to even get into certain markets. Best method right now for that is Open Source. But make no mistake. Google wants to make money. As with everything else Ive seen thats been free and a good. Eventually a company will start charging for it.
- Search
- Web Mail
- Office Suite with Sun
- Potentially operating system with Sun. I would bet money thats in the works.
- And now I hear Google music and browser. - digglugg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I imagine the most interesting aspect of Opera for the G-Unit is that opera has a strong following in the mobile space (PDA's, Smartphones, and etc), where opera has been free I believe all along (correct me if wrong).
- tomaburque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dig it. Opera is small and light and doesn't leak memory like Firefox.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh god...
- karel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As long as they don't drastically change my beloved Opera I won't mind a bit. Oh and keep it ad-free
- coolgeek61813, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im fine with it as long as google makes it better even thought it is already good
- kuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://operawatch.blogspot.com/2005/12/rumor-google-to-buy-opera-according-to.html
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weird but interesting.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been using opera for a long time and I completely de-googlize it. Cant stand google at all. I really hope this doesnt happen :(
Firefox is a browser, opera is more like a research tool. - m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this would be intersting...unless google puts the ads back into opera. Sounds like a better deal for opera than for google.
- kasperistheman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interestingly, Google Desktop doesn't work with Opera right now.
- Flanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thankfully folks, this isn't happening. Or if it is, the CFO has somehow been kept out of the loop:
http://yahoo.reuters.com/financeQuoteCompanyNewsArticle.jhtml?duid=mtfh89277_2005-12-15_16-28-31_l1520386_newsml - LochinRabbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jmechy: I think that your and I's definition of anti-MS differ slightly. I'm personally anti-MS because of the way they "jerk" people around and I would assume the Opera guys are also anti-MS as victims of such behaviour. They may not be anti MS because it's "cool" to be anti MS, but then in general I think that anti-MS sentiment is only interpreted as a fashion statement by MS fanboys. I'm not suggesting that you're a fanboy by the way, your comment is much to reasonable for that. All I'mm saying is that anti-MS != religion.
p.s. the "stupid boy" comment was wrapped in a "manwering" tag that got stripped when I posted, so my comment came across as harsher than I intended. - rmccabe916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm... As an Opera user for a year and a half, I don't know what to say. I don't have the loyalty as some in its community, but I still love Opera to death. I don't know how I would adjust yet if Google does buy Opera.
- locojones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Opera and have used it for a long time. I like that it works out of the box, and doesn't require a thousand plug-ins to just work, or constant upgrades of said plug-ins. Opera does what I want, does it automatically by default, and does it fast, and that's why it's my browser of choice.
That said, I would be wholeheartedly disappointed to see it acquired by Google, who would inevitably build into it some means of tracking my searches and the webpages that I view for their index, which I would NOT be ok with. - LochinRabbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Opera has never been anti-microsoft."
goatse you stupid boy ! read and become informed:
http://people.opera.com/howcome/2003/2/msn/
beforeyou comment. - Vasto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All these people touting extensibility, recently on digg there was a post about how Opera will be supporting widgets natively in their next version.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Q: Is Google set to acquire Opera?
A: No.
W: Check their AdSense referral page and click on the "Firefox" tab. You'll see that Google is trying very hard to Spread FF.
https://www.google.com/adsense/referrals-settings [AdSense Account required] - danmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera is the best browser ever. Consider my experiences for a sec.
I've been on the 'net since '93. Started off with IE, switched to Netscape for awhile, I always thought it was slow. Then FireFox and started using Opera earlier this year after I started loving the USB key version of it for my flash drive.
OPERA FOR LIFE.
Only thing is my favorite website: http://www.ytmnd.com/ - robche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one word people.. Opera-Fire
super fast browser, no memory leaks with extension capabilities. oh yes. - rmccabe916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes and so will Google's new homepage:
Go here: http://www.google.com/ig/directory
And then here: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,123615,pg,4,00.asp (Second paragraph) - jmechy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LochinRabbar: I don't think he meant it in that way. Opera is pissed at MSN because they code their webpages to take advantages of the stupidity that takes place when IE renders a webpage. They use non-standard code, and then when they detect that Opera is trying to reach the page, send it different HTML then they send to IE or even FF. No matter what Opera does to patch MSN so it looks decent, MSN breaks it. This isn't anti-microsoft, this is just being annoyed that the MSN team is jerking Opera around.
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using Opera for a few months now and love it. Firefox is a great browser but Opera does everything FF can do out of the box, and quicker too. I like the integrated rss reader and mail system. It seems well thought out and can never see myself going back to FF.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love opera. I find it the best out of all the available browsers on the web. More features than FF, IE, flock, etc. combined. I would love to use speach recognition, but it doesn't wanna work. Google SHOULD aquire opera. it would make life easier.
+digg - Ithrazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I wrote an article about it a long long time ago. (august) Behold my foresight. Tremble before my insider knowledge.
the article is at http://ithrazel.blogspot.com - iOXeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I first started using Firefox, I thought there was nothing better. Then I found Opera and I soon learned that there was a better browser. Now I never use Firefox. Why not try Opera and see if you like it?
- rmccabe916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@felz
That's what I posted those two links for!!! - zarlwilliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im a huge fan of opera but i dont know if this would be the best move for opera... altho it'd make opera a lot more popular.
either way.. i dont think this will happen.
it was great seeing all the opera fans post in here :) the # of users is growing!! - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If so why would google be working on their own version of firefox?!?
Ia gree opera is as reliable as firefox tho if you take a look at pages rendering properly firefox exeeds opera. Gamespot for example renders fine in firefox and opera the page jumps. - notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting, they could use Firefox for free (but they would need to follow the MPL) or pay money (and probably lots of money) for Opera. I have used both browsers (Safari is my default browser) and don't see any real advantage to using Opera over Firefox, except being able to keep the source closed.
- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why couldn't google buy Firefox??
