- willemrt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+34This one is just slipping through before the election the sneaky bastards!
- vofuse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27At first I thought the title meant "New China" as in new international economic powerhouse that could eventually usurp the USA, but then I remembered all the beer drinking...
- RST1123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19The Kangaroo is the new cat?
- bittermang, on 10/10/2007, -7/+24Didn't we agree not too long ago, as a people, that we were going to retire the "X is the new Y" phrase?
- violencejack, on 10/10/2007, -7/+24***** vegemite is awesome.
- onimusha115, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Im starting to believe that the internet as we know it isn't going to be around much longer. I think that even in the US they will begin to filter and limit what people can see, why not, they seem to be able to whatever else they want and call it protection from terrorism.
- SpykerSpeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10This is why Google is laying their own cables. Free enterprise will always subvert government power grabs.
- jakem1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10The Australian government is no stranger to censorship. Their recent sedition laws work hand in hand with censorship laws. Unfortunately, one thing the article didn't mention was that Australia has no freedom of speech rights enshrined in law.
Censorship is generally used to control the way people think, not to protect them. Only an extremely immature society would rely on the sort of censorship that Australians rely on. If parents don't want their children to find bomb-making instructions on the web then they should pay more attention to what their children are doing online. There is no reason why the government of any country should be dictating what its citizens can think or read. If I want to read what Osama bin Laden has to say about something then I should be able to. Equally, if I want to know how to build a bomb I should be able to access that information - you don't know what I intend to do with the information and it is wrong of you to assume that my intentions are illegal. - drizzlelicious, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Is the spoon the new knife?
- Jaymo89, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Americans don't know how to use vegemite. It's not peanut butter, you spread a very small amount vegemite and a heap of butter on some hot toast :).
Vegemite is basically beer in food form, hence why it is a national favourite. - wesamel, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13I must have been banging your mom when that happened.
- DirtySnachez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7We proudly have many aus-made aus-owned companies employing locals, and putting funds back into the community. It is common practice to see people checking labels at the supermarket and only buying Aus-made.
The most 'popular' aussie food brand is Dick Smith, he even has a box of matches calll Dick Heads...
http://www.dicksmithfoods.com.au/ --- if he looks Chinese to you, Im suprised.
It sucks major balls about the Net Regulation though, Im sure we'll let the law pass, then spend the next 10 years proxying around it. - chaddles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6In Australia, we call that SEDITION.
Now you'll get Digg blocked for us, ya bastard! - dakillakan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I searched for accuracy and could not find the Communications Legislation Amendment (Crime or Terrorism Related Internet Content) Bill 2007 in the Parliament Archives. http://parlinfoweb.aph.gov.au/piweb/ Because the source is just a blog, buried as inaccurate until further proof otherwise.
- Scintillatus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I'd rather eat lead than Vegemite.
- bnolsen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"preventing kids from being retarded and blowing off their hands"
So that's the government's job or mom and dad's?
Sounds to me like china (my wife grew up there). - SharkyTech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5really? go to www.google.com.au, idiot.
- IKEARiot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yup, they're going to ban access to all websites that don't involve sport, drinking and closet homosexuality.
"Drink beer, root sluts"......classic. - pixelperfect, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That US approach is working well!
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4This article raises so many questions.
Is Latvia the new Lithuania?
Is Montana the new Idaho?
But more importantly, is Hackensack the new Fairfield?
Is green the new blue? Is orange the new violet?
Is inanity the new cleverness?
Is Digg the new CNN?
Is paper and pen the new monitor screen? (Scary thought.) - drbyatch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Australia is independent of the UK you ***** moron

its the same reason you have warning labels for - grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4But we also have a bunch of brands that we have sold off. Arnotts, Aeroplane Jelly, Vegemite, Speedo and Holden to name a few. Btw, there is a wikipedia article for Dick Smith's matches.

- Pie4Weebl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4and the government only has the authority to govern as long as we permit them to.

The key clause:
If the AFP Commissioner has reason to believe that Internet content is crime or terrorism related content, the ACMA must notify the content to Internet service providers so that the providers can deal with the content in accordance with procedures specified in an industry code or industry standard (for example, procedures for the filtering, by technical means, of such content).
The key definition:
crime or terrorism related content means ANY OF "[content that] encourages, incites or induces the commission of a Commonwealth offence", "[its] purpose ... is to to facilitate the commission of a Commonwealth offence", OR "[content that] has, or is likely to have, the effect of facilitating the commission of a Commonwealth offence" - darkNiGHTS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Didn't we also agree to stop using "AMAZING!!!!111" in digg titles too?
- biftek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4not spam you say ? scriptlance which has nothing to do with this story , a referer code instead of just a direct links to scriptlance , yep seems like spam to me
- Goodbyeworld, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6the reply button is there for a reason
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Unless, of course, the government legislates against it.
The "Free Market" only exists so long as the authorities permits it to exist. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Government of Singapore owns more Australian assets than the Australian Government. Little Johnny, Deputy Yankee Sheriff and Australian Prime Minister sold off most of the Australian owned assets to private enterprise. The way asset ownership are going we will be owned and run by Singapore. In a way it may be a good thing, it will get rid of the crime in Australia and be less influenced by the hillbilly Yankee President and his cronies.
- kholburn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Damn URL didn't work:
You need to cut and paste these three bits:

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5In a word, 'no,' you ***** sped.
And why is this blog listed under 'tech news' anyway? - waalter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Our government will permit just about anything as long as they're getting kickbacks from lobbyists.
- blast_flame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So if 51% of the population voted to make the remaining 49% slaves you would be fine with that?
- blast_flame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As an australian sport hatter their's my worst nightmare.
- breaks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3i believe that it's an 'option' which 'could' be employed if the end user was to want such filtering.
