- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25REALLY? You should patent it.
- Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Brilliant!
- 8177, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I dont think anyone gives a ***** what you are texting to whom.
- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19This is one of those 'Why didn't I think of that?' things. It's so obvious, yet ingenious.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Then why do they always look?
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I ***** in your mail slot, I hope you appreciate the effort.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Well I text with my thumbs and this makes no sense since my hands would cover the screen. And I can't type a accurate 80wpm on a cell, not even in T9.
- MJ420, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13He's a little late:
http://www.mobilegazette.com/bang-and-olufsen-serene-051007.htm - glc17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The funny thing is, if Apple had done this, this would be the coming of the next messiah.
- raada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Come on. It is a great idea. I'm now going to put my keyboard on top of my monitor. So much more ergonomic.. ;0)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7as silly as it is to make this a patent, that does look a hell of a lot better for texting
- TheFinestShadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It looks like the meat of your palm there will touch the screen and smudge it. How will us people with OCD ever be able to buy such a product? =(
- spidermanspants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There should be an option to rotate the screen around
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4GO IRISH!!!
- Holosoth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm gonna take the windows desktop, flip it over and call it a mac.
- wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or one could bathe and breathe through their nose like the rest of us that came down out of the trees and started walking upright.
- harrisbradley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5c'mon doesn't anybody get oxygen's joke? (classic my man)
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When were these mythical times on Digg? I've been around for quite some time and their have always been idiots arguing about their operating system, off-topic news, and morons pining for the good ol' days of Digg that exist only in their head. Let's make a deal--We'll stay the hell off your lawn and you don't clutter the forums with your pointless rants.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Guinness for the win!
- Jagula, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That phone from the first poster's link, the Serene, looks so amazing.
http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=394337
But, on the other hand, at a price of $1300, thats like 3 iPhones. - knuvue, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Interesting idea, but when texting with two hands, it is actually worse to have the screen on the bottom because the weight of the phone will want to slip downward out of your hands rather than resting on your index fingers as you text with dual thumbs...turn your phone upside down and see for yourself...
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem is, just like with the DVORAK keyboard layout coming after the QWERTY, is everyone is already used to the existing design. DVORAK is far easier to type on, and is very efficient, however, most everyone is used to and not wanting to change from he QWERTY layout, even though there are benefits to doing so.
- fatlard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think it is a good idea. It also kinda also good for privacy by hiding the screen from wandering eyes on the bus or train.
- Eleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like how I thought about this last year and seriously considering patenting it. The only reason I didn't is because I figured that it would have already been thought of. I got the idea by holding my cell phone upside down and realizing how natural it felt pressing the buttons up there. Now I'm depressed, wondering if I've missed out on a fortune :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Maybe. The patent (link below) was filed 19 April 2006, well after the Serene was released.
http://www.patentdata.com//files/images/2007/01/3198/document.pdf - DeFex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4most people do not have wax flowing out of their ears. besides for $1300 it has an anti earwax forcefield and anti fogging resonator on the screen.
- xela321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh, everyone's mentioned the drunk Irish who want an upside-down phone, but really, these things are meant for the poor kids out there like Jake: http://familyguy.wikia.com/images/b/ba/JakeTucker.jpg
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@klaymen
I don't think it's a silly patent. Things like this are perfectly valid. Simple, but not obvious. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He is later than everyone thinks. I invented this in on May 8th 2005. In fact it was way before that just took me that long to put up the post at...
http://greedoneverfired.blogspot.com/2005/05/arthritis-relief.html - onemillion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i cant believe this isn't done before. i mean, it seems so simple and unoriginal, it makes you wonder why it HASN'T been done before.
- wakaseoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. I don't see an new process or a new product to solve a problem. I doubt this will be recorded, and if it were I doubt it might hold in court.
- SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you for patenting the obvious. 30 years of remote controls should for TVs to kitchen sinks. It's much easier to hold and press the buttons on a remote.
- kaelveixn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally!!!
RAVE: An ergonomic phone, woo! For years (and I mean – years) I’ve ranted over the fact that cell phones forced our hands and fingers to operate a shrinking phone!
RANT: For years, I’ve had this idea but never filed a patent for it!
Would this phone just remain a concept idea or actually get picked up by cell phone manufacturers and put in production? I am holding my breath for as long as I can. - ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And if you try and make a phone call on it your ear will constantly be pressing the keys. I don't think this will work.
- CLongfellow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A start-up named Wildseed shipped a Linux based phone in 2004 with the keypad above the screen. It was manufactured by Curitel. The phone also had other novel features such as replaceable plastic skins with an embedded smart-card chip able to update features on the phone. Wildseed was bought by AOL in 2005. See:
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7002110505.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow. The digg giveth and the comments taketh away. (see CLongfellow below) oh well.
- inmatarian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I have a garmin GPS with the screen underneath the buttons. Geko101? Only good for forest hikes, nothing else.
- ShepherdBook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was the first thing I thought of when I bought my MP3 player (sandisk e200). To spin the wheel you have to bend your thumb down to the base of your palm, or put the center of mass of the device out near your fingertips.
No, I don't have tiny girl hands. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The keys will be in the same position, just the screen has moved. If you bought this phone, you might get a few confused friends who might initially hold it the wrong way, but once they realize the screen goes on the bottom, I don't think it will take much acclimation.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Problem; most phone users are already accustomed to wiping the ear oil and schmootz off their phone after using it. Imagine compounding it with the screen down in your hand, now it'll get oily and schmootzy after texting too?
I'll pass. - subversive1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like the goo from your ear won't?
- subversive1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2BRILLIANT!
- leoCT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When people with OCD (at least the Monk type) discover how much of a bacteria nest any cell phone is, they throw them away anyway.
- juliocgrajales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this is so stupid, I am going to patent the television buttons on top of the screen instead of the bottom of the screen, the keyboard on top of my laptop monitor and actually, omg soon I will be able to patent my kids... I am going to patent the way I position items in my house and call it some weird name ***** and start a whole cult following sell books, start my own tv show, infomericials the works so watch out people for ***** style of living, I am going to patent the US Patenting process and then the US government has to pay me for patenting the patents but then I have to pay the US Government Patents Office Fees to approve my Patent for the process of Approving Patents, I will be rich
- yonnermark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I invented this 4 months ago:
http://www.yonner.co.uk/yonner-blog/292/mobile-phone-innovation
I said this:
"I just want to get this on record before some big phone company comes along and does it before I get to say it first."
and this:
"Have the buttons at the top of the phone and the screen at the bottom et voila! one-handed phone use becomes suddenly so much more comfortable. You can get a miles better grip."
I shoudl've patented it - pipebender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get your facts right. It's a Australian who inveted this phone, not an Irish one.
- Meowbiusfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm working on a phone that also functions as an electric razor and a shaving cream
dispensing system that sends the cream though ISDN lines straight out of your USB port.
Don't believe me? Neither do I.
- yonnermark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it could work like the iphone where the buttons are disabled when you hold the phone to your face
- mickeyknoxxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I'm sure it will be great for texting. But probably like every other phone when it comes........(drop call) ......
- mcl768, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For everyone asking "who has your keyboards on top of your monitors?" I have a question. Who holds your monitor and keyboard in your hand and types with your thumbs? Different devices should be setup differently in order to make it easier to use. Just because you have your keyboard lower than your monitor on a desk doesn't mean that it should be the same way on a hand held device. I have actually had this idea before because when you hold the phone in your palm the thumb naturally rests at the top of the phone, if the screen and buttons were reversed (not upside down like the title says) the buttons would be right at your thumb making them very easy to reach while holding the phone, I think its a great idea and I'm glad to see that someone actually did it. If you don't like it... Don't buy one.
