- anarchtica, on 10/11/2007, -4/+142It seems like this article gives too much credit to Kevin Rose. To me, it seems like Pownce is more of Leah's "baby" and Kevin is just there to serve as instant name recognition and occasional user input. The article doesn't even mention Leah and Daniel Burka till the second to last paragraph on a two page article.
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+103Of course if it wasn't for Kevin Rose's PR, nobody would've given a ***** about that site.
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -14/+97OMG, the title had "Kevin Rose" in it! Why can't I digg this story more than once??! *cries*
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -2/+49From what I can tell as a tester, Pownce is pretty useless. Even e-mail has more use because the recipient doesn't need to be online. I thought perhaps it might be good for a project team, but then why wouldn't they be using something like Basecamp? I just don't see the point, existing solutions are fine. There probably is room for improvement in the way we do things now, but I don't think Pownce is it.
- Mortikhi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31It must be a hard life re-inventing email and selling the idea to suckers
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -6/+35I heard Kevin Rose's next veture will be a Reddit-like social bookmarking site
- isuisorisuaint, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31i got an invite this morning and i'm already yawning.
- Mafoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26Has anyone tried out Pownce? It sounds interesting, but it would have to be damn good to compete with all that other gazillion social sites out there.
- dpknc84, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19 You wasted $0.99.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20The secret to web 2.0 profitability is finding an audience that is stupid or knows next to nothing about computers. A complete lack of experience on the internet is also very important. Why?
Because the only business model that Web 2.0 has come up with so far is to sell Google text ads. Period- no exceptions. And techies don't click on advertisements, ever. The only people who click on text ads are people who are too stupid to distinguish between ads and regular links on a page.. Which is why the big advertising bucks go to sites that are filled with teenagers/newbies or older people who are barely computer literate- like our parents.
Those are the people that click on ads, and they are the entire foundation of web 2.0
There's a reason Digg only made 3 million dollars in revenue last year- the users here don't click on ads. That 3 million dollars didn't even cover the salaries of their 7 employees and bandwidth.
Slashdot has been around forever and has much more traffic than digg, but it'll never be worth hundreds of millions of dollars either, because nobody in their audience clicks on the ads.
If Kevin aims "Pownce" at teenagers or elderly people, then maybe he can make a buck selling ads. Otherwise, it'll be just as much of a financial flop as Digg. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Unfortunately acquirers don't digg Kevin Rose, so we'll see how long his star burns.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Internet entrepeneurs tend to only have one really good idea - after that everything is just......meh.
Digg was Kevin Roses genius idea and its extremly unlikey pownce will be anything other than an ok idea for a few hundred keen users but nothing really there for the masses. He should concentrate 100% on Digg and Revision3 (which essentially backs up Digg) and either make it extremly profitable or get the user signups up and sell it to a big coorp and sit back and live off the interest. - steveoco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15I found it too complicating and actually redundant. I'm sure there are lots of people that will get something out of it... it just isn't for me.
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13So.. basically you're calling yourself a 'n00b' ?
Good job with the 13 year old 1337 speak by the way, you just proved to everyone how little you know about the internet and how long you've been using it.. - posneg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Pownce is lame.
- BishopAzrael, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Pownce would be great if it could do things like transfer large files OVER 100mb. I have cd install images for my remote techs that I wind up either transfering via PC Anywhere or just sending via the mail. If kevin could find a way to make vpn networking much easier, or something along those lines it'd be fine.
As it is I think Pownce is just another social circle jerk site. Dont get me wrong. Kevin's really talented and all, but previous posters are right. Exisiting solutions are covering this already. First thing to do in a situation like this is to find a need that isnt being fullfiled and then work on that. - pictureDIGGER, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Diggers are the reason Kevin is where he is at. Diggers are the reason he is popular at all. If it weren't for you submitting all the content and helping with the editorial duties for his first successful website (digg), he would be some guy drinking beer on a MacBook. You all deserve a pat on the back. And maybe a beer from Kevin.
- TheSkinsFactory, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I've tried Pownce. I think it's an interesting idea, but best served as an add-on to something bigger than itself.
- mliving, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Or Google Talk?
Send messages, files, photos, music, movies, calendar events...
*****! It's NOT original folks! Just Kevin trying to capitalize on DIGG's popularity... - dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6file sharing, ability to separate your "friends" and your "fans" (only useful for Kevin Rose and Leo Laporte), user lists, no limit to message length.. probably some other stuff
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Will someone explain how Pownce is different from Twitter?
- steveoco, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Of course he can get a tonne of venture capital. He was the driving force behind digg.com
Weather or not pownce is going to have the same impact as digg is highly unlikely.
I don't think any of his new ventures will live up to his pony. - Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Being a sort of a web IM allowing the transfer of large files, I don't think it's that special to be honest.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+7Am I the only one on this site who's sick of seeing all these social networking sites?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites
How many do we need? - hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4is it about organizing your different kinds of friends?
i mean weve all got quite a variety of friends - and the information wed want to share with them
varies too
is it to arrange it all in one place so you can update (or not) everyone with just one message - jongos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I love digg and I really want to like Pownce but it's useless in that I can''t send files or links to people who aren't using it. The number of people that I want to send large files to (even if I have to pay the stupid $20) that aren't using Pownce (lots) is far higher than the number of people who are using it (none). So yeah, it looks pretty but it's not actually functional unless all your friends are early adopters and already on the the Pownce network. Ofcourse, if Pownce ever becomes as ubiquitous as Gmail this won't be that much of an issue. But why even have them join Pownce if they already have e-mail accounts?
Hopefully there's some new features in the works aside from trying to convince all my friends to join. - LowRentDiggs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4AIR is the new framework Adobe is rolling out to allow you to run Flash apps (among other technologies) on the desktop. You'll most likely see a lot of these types of apps in the near future.
- ell0bo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Kevin is 30 huh, I guess that gives me 5 years to make something of myself before I accept I'm just another good programmer / entrepreneur that isn't going anywhere special.
- jdibiase, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7"Kevin is just there to serve as instant name recognition and occasional user input." -- maybe so, and if so, it worked, didn't it? Got them an article in Business Week. Would that have happened without the Kevin Rose name attached?
- OwdenBowden, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I have no problems with anyone using what they have to generate the necessary momentum that is needed to be successful - Be it Kevin Rose, Dean Kaman, Women that use what they have... It all works. So if you got it - flaunt it!
Anyone would live to ride their products on the coat tales of these individuals. - keithmcbride, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6its a good site, but not something that is going to take the internet by storm.
i like it, to post just small little random notes, but i doubt any of my real friends would ever sign up - xpose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This was Leah's idea I think and Kevin Rose just got his fanboy club to go to the site to provide traffic.
- bdurkin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Well I hope for your sake that it is worth it, you meet some people, get a life, and stop wasting money on stupid ***** like this. Is ebay where you purchased a bunch of WOW money too?
- necbone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5the kid always seemed like a tool to me....
- anagoge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Digg - Awesome
Revision3 - Great
Pownce - Meh - ccrook, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I picked up a pounce account just to try it out in all its glory. Quite frankly, I don't believe it adheres to the tenet that a new app/product must have 3 worthwhile improvements / differences for it to be produced. From what I can see Pownce doesn't have that. It's the Kia of social networking sites when there is still the Lexus of Facebook available.
- crisrose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4i too tried it yesterday and kinda found myself saying "what's the point if you're already on Facebook?"
Apart from the file sending (only 10MB at that, way too small) it has nothing FB doesn't have. My mate couldn't even get the file transfers working...
My Real Life friends and Forums friends aren't going to sign up to this when we're all already on Facebook, Flickr, Skype and Digg.... - JuliusErving, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5There's no doubt pownce wouldn't be getting as much recognition if it weren't for kevin rose. However, I think you're missing the point of the article. The article isn't about pownce, it's about Kevin Rose's success with getting VCs to back his companies. So given that, it makes sense that the article "doesn't even mention Leah and Daniel Burka till the second to last paragraph on a two page article."
- kidcodea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4no, you arent.
- MisterSam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Buried as lame, why do people keep digging pownce stories just because Kevin Rose made it? It's just a rehash of FTP (made like 25 years ago)
- allhard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You are on Digg, you are in no position to tell others to get a life.
- zeejay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Riiiiight... just hire some AJAX devs, and boom, your company is worth hundreds of millions, on the brink of a bidding war between Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. Yep, it's that simple.
- zeejay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What....? If this were the .com boom, Digg and Revision 3 would have 200 employees instead of a few dozen, would have burned through $300 million in VC, and would be filing for an IPO on the NASDAQ, after which they'd consistently report a major loss every quarter.
Rose's ventures have used minimal VC (and don't need any more to get to profitability) and are growing the companies organically. - kent1146, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Meh. As much as I love Digg, it will fall under the same trap that web companies do. These kinds of websites have LOTS of user traffic. But once you try and monetize that beyond just a few banner ads, the users will scatter and go to the next big thing.
- zeejay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If it's any consolation, the minute YOU get written up and called a "wunderkind" in BusinessWeek, I will digg it.
- fruhbuzz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4WOW, this is sowaaaaaycool!
(yawn, zzzzz....) - brandon272, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Kevin Rose sure does get a lot of attention at Business Week. For being such a web "wonder kid", (I don't know many kids who are THIRTY ***** years old, by the way) - I personally question how much capital the investors of his projects have seen enter their pocketbooks. From my perspective, digg is poorly capitalized, I don't even pay attention to Revision3 and "Pownce" seems like a piece of *****. *shrug* ..
- pictureDIGGER, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Sorry to comment again, but Kevin Rose having investor's is not really a good thing for the site. I wouldn't want investor's influencing what appears on the front page and what doesn't. But investor's certainly wouldn't want any bad news about them or their special interests on the Front Page. It makes you wonder what Digg will be like 5 years from now.
- rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Last I read (6 months ago maybe?) Digg was pulling in almost $4,000,000 a year from ads served. Sounds like they are making money to me.

What is Digg?
