- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19One of the things I really like about digg.com is that the staff keeps it real low-key on the site itself. They digg stories, occasionally submit and comment...but are content to let the users be the stars.
Even as digg's popularity and influence has rocketed off the charts...they still keep to the background for the most part. Admirable example of self-control; the temptation to use the site regularly as a platform or playground to push an agenda ...or be here constantly editorializing in comments...or to use this site to become a rockstar must be great. This has definitely created a certain aura of mystery about some of them...maybe that's the idea? Or just an unintended side effect.
With that in mind, it's good to read (listen to) stories like this now and then here...little more insight into the behind-the-scenes guys. - dburka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Dude, total respect for mentioning Rick's league in the Digg comments. This thread will be interesting to about two dozen people in the entire world. That brought a smile to my face on a rainy Friday afternoon. Well, at least it's not snowing.
- antidentite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Daniel, this is awesome. When I found out a guy from PEI was designing digg I was blown away. Great work man. Hope San Fran is a little warmer than Montreal (where I am right now). You still playing bball? All the Rick's league members want to know.
Sorry that this isn't so much a comment. - ziki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you think about it, the reason digg is so successful is because of the easy interface. Keep up the great work Daniel
- jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You can listen to it here. http://digg.com/podcasts/CreativeXpert_Design_Interview_Series/214931
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dear Daniel,
Don't you think it sucks that Digg doesn't have nested comments? - Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great work Daniel! I remember you from Ch'town Rural, graduated same year if I recall correctly... plus my father and I did some electrical work at the old silverorange offices back in the day. I'm in Ontario now, for the past few years and I'm glad to hear you're doing well... good luck in the future!
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, I really wonder what digg would look like without Daniel. I think the visual cues, a lot of the entire design motif, and many of the major usability innovations that define Digg can be accredited to him. Personally, I once asked Daniel for some advice a while back about design; and, he gave me an overwhelmingly comprehensive response (for a small question I posed). Good interview, great guy, and cheers for his future at Digg
- dvdgee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is there a reason the creative component website doesn't credit the Hemingway theme being used on its site? It seems like a straight-up copy of the theme, with only the credit removed. What's up with that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Daniel;
Two things please:
A) Digg *NEEDS* nested comments, this 1-level-reply is for the birds.
B) A mechanism to find comments "to your" comments so that you can respond to people's questions/posts. For instance, I have replied to mancat. What if Mancat posts a reply to *this* comment? I'd like to be able to see all the locations of people replying *to* me.
Thanks! - andyatkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry I haven't listened to the podcast, but I really like the design, fonts colors, icons and layout at digg, but the UI workflow needs a little work. When I am not logged-in and I click digg story, up pops the login, should be in a lightbox, then I should authenticate, and right away I should be forwarded the digg permalink of the article I was digging, ---and it should be dug---. Instead I have to login on a separate page and navigate back to where I was, which is tedious and error prone. using client-side cookies or query string parameters, digg developers should be able to handle a digg request without the user being logged-in first. But hey, not many sites are this advanced and digg is close, so great job thus far!
- covertbadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The most annoying workflow problem is when you are not logged in and have multiple tabs open. You see something you want to digg or reply to, login, and digg sends you...to a completely different story (normally the last one you opened). This is why you so often see posts that have nothing to do with the story you're reading - people don't notice they've been unexpectedly redirected. It's intensely irritating, and I can't understand why it has remained unfixed for so long.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6i'm sure he will read it, so here are my two cents:
1) let me undo my vote via thumb on comments
2) let me delete my comments within the 2 minutes
thanks - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about the ability to include pictures in our comments? Posting graphs and such is usefull when the debates start...
- mmaclean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This thread might be the Digg record holder for most comments by Ch'town Rural HS grads (class of 94 here).
- component, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sometimes that might be helpful, but IMHO I'd rather see it plain & clean. Have you seen signatures in forums? It could start to look the the inside of a locker, or worse -- My Space. *shudder*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Look at that picture of his high school. I see what he did there.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Link to blog, that links to a blog, that links back to digg? WTF?

- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1While we are at it, something that has bugged me for a while is 'Newly Popular'.
'Newly' is not a word. Try Recently. - component, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3dvdgee: because i chose to edit the credit out of my footer doesn't imply that i'm not grateful. it implies only that i can edit. i'm an active contributor to the forums at warpspire, and have helped several people with setting-up hemingway. lastly, no major tweaks were made hemingway, because it's already amazing. now back on topic...
- dvdgee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1component: there's no need to be defensive, it was an honest question. actually, i was more intrigued that a company (person?) that is "first and foremost designers" would use a canned template to begin with.
- yahtzee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0class of 2000, maybe? I know (kinda) Dan and Steve of Silverorange through my brother.. :P
- Pilgrim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You sir, are an idiot.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1well if anyone here reading this would be interested in working on UI on a really excellent application, they should contact litepost.
