"Isn't the google index like 4 billion. And i know those are just web pages but the average site might only have maybe a 100-1000 web pages. Therefore I belive that number is way off."
I like your math. Where do you pull that average from, your ass?
Let's say the average site had just 50 web pages. 50 x 80,655,992 = 4,032,799,600.
OH LOOK. 4 billion! What did you say Google's index was? Oh wait, 4 billion? *gasp*
Also, IP addresses are *not* assinged per webpage.
Sorry to bitch but I hate it when people don't even test their own theories before posting, throwing off everyone elses opinion in the process. - Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21You've reached the end of the Internet. Now, go outside and play.

When you put it that way it really seems low. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13And 70 million of them are blogs. :(
- AllenS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12i don't know why, but that number seems kinda low...
- andrewa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13What use is this article if there isn't a link to download them all?
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yet sadly, i feel like ive seen it all...
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10google also indexes a lot of free hosts, like tripod (ugh...) and they have probably 5000-10000 free sites hosted. There's also myspace, which could have upwards of 50,000,000 pages. Also, freewebs, geocities, 100megs, etc.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Any word on how much of that is porn?
And I'm sure alot of those aren't exactly websites. People probably bought the name and then did nothing with it, waiting for someone else to pay for it. Considering that...that number is really low. - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10lol...
But do you *really* want to see that list?

- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Is that all?
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"There's also myspace, which could have upwards of 50,000,000 pages."
true. but the article is talking about websites. - soda0289, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Isn't the google index like 4 billion. And i know those are just web pages but the average site might only have maybe a 100-1000 web pages. Therefore I belive that number is way off.
Also there can only be 4 billion IP address and those are almost all used up. Even if you say 60% of those are webpages that still a lot. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7guys, this isnt the total website pages or subdomains, this is the total singular websites that are delivered by the same set of servers. such as, there are tons of blogs, etc., but most of those are owned by a singular website/server, so they are counted as 1 website.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And half of those are porn sites.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i think blogs, that belong to google blogger for example, are counted as a single website instead of 500,000
- pwrstick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I frequent probably 3 or 4 of those on a regular basis.
- bigpeeler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Article is worthless without a list.
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It might seem low, but figure that you visit 1 new webpage every second non-stop, it would take around 2 years to visit them all. PLUS more are being added every day, it would be impossible in some ones lifetime to visit them all. (unless you were running a macro in a room of 50 or so computers equiped with a OC-192 line....)
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sadly, you have (minus the intellectual parts); if you frequent myspace. :P
- rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think a website is actually kind of hard to technically define, is a website a viewable page? is a website a domain? is a website a web server?
For example, I run a web server with one IP address, it hosts around 30 domains, each of these domains contains at least one website, our primary domain we host even more websites in the style of domain.com/username. Some of these users run more than one website from their own web space domain.com/user/website_a and website_b. Plus there is our own website at domain.com and there are parts of our website that to a bot might look like other websites, for example domain.com/about and domain.com/forum
So in our case, you could say we either have 1 website (1 web server), or 30 websites (30 domains) or thousands of websites, (thousands of directories) or millions of websites (every viewable forum topic, html page and pdf on the server)
For those whom are interested there are around 230 users on the server we run, we are not exactly sure how many websites we have, it would require a better definition and a very extensive audit. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And only 50,000,000 are porn.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It does seem low..
- swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+480 million x registar fees = some people are making a tonne of money for very little work.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6how is 81 million low? that's like half the adult population of america owning one website each.
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"I want to download the Internet onto my laptop, so I can take it with me"
*sigh....* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think this might emphasize a rarely considered truth; namely that the majority of the world's population still does not have reliable access to the internet. Think about it, there are 1.09 billion people in India, the majority of whom live on a yearly income far below that of the poorest American. Nearly the entire continent of Africa lives on less than a dollar a day. These folks have bigger fish to fry than finding that perfect Livejournal avatar.
- ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Simple: Hostnames != websites.
Ever heard of http://somedomain/~user/ ? I believe that counts as a site, too. - Drood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4All those websites, and there's probably only 25 or so worth visiting regularly...
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10yes because only american create webpages, lets ignore the majority would we, ie. the rest of the world
- modian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I understand pissguzzlinggrannies.edu is still available.
/onion - BBSCI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but 40,000,000+ are just dummy sites with misspelling of other site names. Another 20,000,000 are clones of other site aimed at getting higher search engine ratings. Another 20,000,000 are names that have been reserved hoping they can be sold for profit. That leaves only 652,999 and only 42 have anything useful...
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2without me, there would only be 80,655,990.
- infl00p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There was a resent study, which showed that experienced Internet users can tell the quality of a website in less than a second. So if such a user, wants to see all the websites, it would have taken him 30 months to categorize them as worthy or not worthy to view. That's why search engines and page ranking is significant.
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So Netcraft confirms it -- the web is thriving!
- Xtopherous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The link itself states that these are unique "hostnames". My guess is that since they said hostnames instead of domain names or webpages, they're counting domains and subdomains. So it's probably not just IPs, but all unique sites that resolve to those IPs.
I Digg your comment though; the ambiguity can be quite annoying. - gator99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Myspace is only one website, no matter how many losers have "space" there.
- armosfighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Phfff! I bet about 40% of them are porn sites.
- snypa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3that number does seem amazingly low, but after mrASSMAN said that all the website pages are under one server, and its this server that is counted as one, i can maybe see why the number is so.
still seems low.
i would love to know how many websites there are, that must be in the ***** billions. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I sure hope you're right.
- mindtrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you count blogs, and sites that provide profiles, you could easily double that number, I'm sure.
- JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Submitted by digitalgopher 14 hours 1 minute ago"
This information is no longer relevant. The internet has since tripled in size.
:P - Julz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow only 80,655,992 i would has guesed it was billionz

http://www.htk.com.br/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also heard reports of Google indexing the same page 40 times and while searching I have seen it happen.
- Kailash.Nadh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats all? hm.
- 2drunk2funk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just like the tv channels though, most are utter dross with a few worth watching :)
Hey, thats why I come to digg, find something interesting out there in the WWW. - h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Last time Google revealed any numbers, they had 8+ billion pages.
But keep in mind the NetCraft survey is talking about hostnames, not pages. -
