- goostoff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You want this to work? You will need to get either a telephone company or an electric company to use this device to compete with cable and satellite.
- goostoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not WebTV. It's the ability to receive _real_ television stations across the internet. Much like VOIP uses the internet to send and receive telephone calls, IPTV allows for television and movies to be sent across the internet. No longer will cable and satellite be the only providers of television, electric and telephone companies can offer similar programming.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Are you serious?
- c0r3file, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Just because one chunk of hardware wasn't successful doesn't mean IPTV is a failure, which is what the submitter's headline implies. No digg. - aluminumpork, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I detected a note of sarcasm is his comment. Obviously he wasn't being serious.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9An overpriced, featureless device designed for a niche market fails to satisfy and be profitable. News at 11.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IPTV has hit big in some countries.
Japan, Iceland, South Korea... - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Iptv will be big but not in the way pay content producers think it will be big.
If they think that people will want to buy the same crap there already paying
too much for now on cable and sat they have another thing coming.
No way people can stream video, play on xbox live, play Wow, web browse and run P2P.
on a connection slower than 500k.
This is the average speed for most dsl connections In the USA.
Internet connections need to be pumped up a little before you will get even base acceptance. - silkysaul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3IPTV will hit big. Mark my words...
The same way bluetooth been out several years ago and has now finally caught up to the masses. - brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm sorry but The Apple ITV is crap. It's old technology, weak and over-priced. If Apple really want to do something, they should release something that competes directly with MCE. Now that's something people would get excited about. An MCE system with Apple design and interface. I would pay 2K EUR for it today if it weren't Except for my rule NEVER to buy first generation stuff from ANYONE. Early adopters are abused so badly it is beyond funny.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Lame review that fails to meantion, they know their service sucks right now
if you read the mytvpal press release
""The service to start, will offer over 700 free IPTV channels from over 70 countries, including standard definition and high definition channels to any broadband user with 1.5mbps speed or higher. A wide range of video on demand titles will be offered for a low monthly cost in the months to come with new TV channels and VOD titles being added each month.
User uploaded content and DVR features will be available as a software upgrade for PC and STB clients in 2007"
SO they will be adding channels, more vod and features as time goes by.. this is more of a beta trial period...and they are offering the pc version for free right now.
seriously any competent reviewer should have mentioned they are planning on releasing more features and content.. i dont mind him being disappointed with the current offering, just be up front with peeps about the product. - banderbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As long as i can still use my TiVo, IPTV sounds great.
- xraycat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're offering fiber-to-your-block and install a second modem for access to HD IPTV since Nov. 1. They use Motorola STB (VIP 1200) that are being used in the US with AT&T U-Verse. I thought they weren't very advanced but checking Motorla's site the codecs are MPEG-4 (H.264), VC-1, and MPEG-2. It runs a version on Windows CE as well. I guess they crash a lot and have had problems with low memory.
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was impressed with my DSL provider's IPtv service, not sure why its not catching on state side. Quite a few Canadian ISPs are getting into the game these days and i guess since moving HD has been implemented at my old carrier.
Any Sasktel MAX users out there? hows the compression on the signal? is it mpeg 2 or h.264 ? - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bittorrent between evrybody!... might get more stuff on but i guess we would all be arrested the next day.
- jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice, but the "states" dont have enough bandwidth for this to catch on --yet. slowly, as fiber and power line connections take the place of dsl/cable, you'll see iptv catch on. even with my akimbo player, which is not _real_ time, it's a damn good player -- and i can truly see iptv potential. it's just a matter of time.
watch for iptv late 2007/2008... - directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An in the mean time, people are rerouting DNS requests for the simple purpose of surfing the web on the standard def Wii. People will work hard and for free for what they want, but won't pay for it.
- Conwaysb0718, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yea, but you had to be in France to get it. arrfff that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1after playing with their software... it is still mega beta
i think some tv players out there are better like tvu
a few channels didnt work, takes time to change channels and right now doesnt really seem to offer anything more than any of the tv players o the web - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You're an early adopter, what did you expect?
- bhasden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone ever heard of ITVN? They have a very loyal following of customers. Mainly soccer fans, but they have deals with Starz and NBC Universal. I've been looking to get rid of Comcast and ITVN is about the closest to an alternative I could find (can't do DirecTV at my apartment). If they could sign a deal with Comedy Central and ESPN, I'd be all over it. Anyway, give them a couple months to mature and sign some contracts with providers (although they should've probably waited until they had a big name provider to launch with).
- smoothly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"there's a reason why iptv is not catching on... yet... voip was viral. it takes 2. iptv is not..."
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, 10 years from now, perhaps it will hit big, but then your local cable company global network conglomerate ABCNNBCBS will have locked up IPTV so hard it will be crap still.
- Clodagh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree. Apple is in bed with all major TV studios. If iTV starts to sell like iPod's (which it may), Apple could announce an iTunes TV subscription service, hey-presto IPTV with millions of possible customers, instantly.
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
Dugg for having "sucks balls" in the description. - markdoe12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Try http://www.myeasytv.com/ if I remember correctly they have some HDTV channels
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0its similar because the idea of using another medium to deliver content that is already a staple of every home (almost). IPTV has its differences, but ultimately I think demand is limited as non tech savvy ppl would hate it - it relies on your internet connection and imagine what would happen if net neutrality died.
- oyst22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1HDTV over IP sounds still like sci-fi to me.
anyway if you have at least a 2MB internet connection you might try:

It's a test HDTV channel streaming in almost-dvd quality, and as far as I can see, it works pretty well. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Apple+iTunes+iTV = Future of IPTV
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1YEah the IPTV is not far along enough to be present in a living room on a big tv.
It needs to be higher quality and better connection rates.
I do enjoy watching it while Im on my computer though at http://www.channelking.com - krikoko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Great TV site http://www.lordoftv.com

- marcool, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1arrffff you americans are so late...
In France we have had these kind of services for almost 6 or 7 months now. We have 7 providers that *really* works with VOD contents.
Have a look at this if you can read french : http://adsl.free.fr/tv - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2definately reaks of webTV-esque scenario. Why pay for something that isnt properly perfected or functional.
- doorknob21, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Can we say WebTV all over again?
- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1You lose at Digg.
- kidtwist, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7What does the "IP" in "IPTV" stand for? I'm guessing "Intellectual Property".
