Interactive Barcodes in Newspaper Ads: The Next Frontier for
mashable.com — Dan Frommer at Silicon Alley Insider alerts us to a new offering from Google: the ability to purchase ads within newspapers that contain a 2D bar code.

- dotlizard, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1well that actually might work. years ago, Radio Shack gave out these things called Cue Cats (cat scanners!) that you were supposed to be able to scan regular bar codes in their catalog (with scanner plugged into your puter) and it would take you to the web page -- but mostly what they were good for was hacking them to be regular old bar code scanners (that you could get for free). which was fun and all, but still.
sounds like the technology has come to a point where it's almost useful.- whitezombie420, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2actually the cue cat is why i think its worthless. those things didn't catch on then, i don't think they'll catch on now. its just so much faster and easier to just type what your looking for into googleand find it yourself. plus print is dead, the only people that buy newspapers now are old people and people that want a particular issue because of the front page or someone they know being featured. aside from that everyone uses the web for news. developing technologies that only old people use is not a good business model if you want growth.
