- digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm not surprised. it sounded like it was pretty gimmicky to start with. Plus when people have difficulty putting their finger on exactly what the product is, it a recipe for trouble/re-work.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What?! A product doesn't live up to the hype that the company built up? You have to be kidding me!!!
- rastorize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5People didn't seem to be able to figure out Centrino when it first came out either...now look at its success. I wouldn't say VIIV is gimmicky or a failure just yet...too early to tell.
- dcheung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Viiv has no vision. Basically they are trying to sell you off the shelf hardware found in 99% of PCs in a HTPC case with a shiny sticker.
Windows Media Center is not ready for prime time yet. It seems Intel is trying to do a complete hardware/software package rather than doing what they do best...make hardware. The sad thing is there is no new innovation on this front. Viiv is using off the shelf hardware, has a new sticker on it, a 'prettier' case, and a markup.
Let's see...no hdmi requirements (or require a dvi/hdmi cable), no componet requirements,
no optical out requirements, no 'decibal' requirements, no HDTV tuner requirements .... I think you just knocked out your high-end audio/visual guys and everyone that has newish tvs. - CorneliusAgain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, now we have the intel based Mac Mini, which is pretty good for this stuff, it's hard to see why Intel is pushing the Windows solution.
More seriously, Apple's control of mose of both the hardware and software in the mini and the iPod (and I mean the whole experience here, not just the box) gives it a big advantage. Ditto the TiVo or mobile phones. The coming of the specialized "information appliances" that replace general computers for most purposes has long been predicted, and this and things like the mess of WMA based MP3 players makes it clear enough that the way the general PC industry works doesn't translate to that new world. - jambarama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The main "feature" of VIIV is DRM. Not mildly benign iTunes like DRM, but instead we are talking Trusted Computing. Meaning they own your box. Because of this, media companies are clamouring to support the thing.
So regardless of the technical failures, it may succeed in the market. There is a lot of force (intel, big media) trying to push this from behind, if consumers start biting, media on non-DRM encumbered computers may be in trouble.

- raptorGT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So, essentially what we're left with is a crappy Pentium 4 with loads of free video clips and coupons? Then, to top it off, the only true difference between the Viiv and the Pentium 4 is a little gay rainbow sticker? :-D No wonder Intel's lagging behind, they've run out of marketing ideas, originality, and keep producing crappy products at inflated prices - kinda like Chevrolet and Pizza Hut. If I see Jessica Simpson walking at me with another tray of pizzapops or whatever the hell those grease-filled chunks of goo are, I'm gonna puke.
- rastorize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Other than the fact that Intel INVENTED the microprocessor...that's what you call 'hype' I suppose...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If People can't clearly see what they're buying, they probably won't buy it.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is this the one with built-in DRM? Maybe it's a good thing that users are confused and will slow the adoption rate.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That will be a cold day in hell. The DRM cookie jar has been open too long. There's no way the content providers are going to put the lid back on it any time soon.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A bad idea is a bad idea, whether it comes from Infinium Labs or Intel. Seems that the PS3 & XBOX 360 will bring much of the same features, and cost much less. Whatever should I do...?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2VIIV is an evill POS anyway.
Sounds cool but DRM will
prevent it from being cool
and homebrew solutions will be better. - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Viiv is the ghost of Netburst...
- elgato65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe somebody at Intel is trying to boycott this product. And this person first move was approving that lame, cryptic, unreadable, undecipherable logo.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really don't normally say stuff like this (or like/enjoy doing so), but intel really hasn't ever been much more than hype.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmm... looks like Intel had an issue spelling Vi... LOL!
"Whos CPU is this?"
"Intel's"
"Who is Inetel?"
"Intel went to hell baby..."
-/Pub Fiction - aurigus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Viiv almost reminds me of Ford's Edsel. It seems Intel brought all of it's marketing people together and had them put together what consumers really want while missing the mark entirely. What they forgot was what really makes a product useful. History really does repeat itself.
In the end people are not dumb. Intel has an idea of what the media center pc "should" be but it is entirely unrealistic in the market today. - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1excellent point there.
Front Row just needs some good recording/tv tuner features built in and its will be all set.
(add in some plugins for navigating emulators/ROM libraries, and I'd be in heaven) - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wtf is V//V? it sounds like a Centrino package thingy. i don't understand why intel bother branding V//V. a waste of money if you ask me.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is the year the giants fall. Sony started early last year. Intel is just about to begin. Buy your AMD stock everyone.
- nathanstarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, surprising....
- bloodrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1another Intel screw up
- moshguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What a let down. All that hype and all you get is a retarded P4 with coupons.
I hope AMD gives Intel a run for their money this year. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe they should combine the two lossmakers, viiv and the itanic for their next 'effort', then they can kill off the whole division and get back to something which people actually want.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1isn't just a pentium D with a intel chipset just like how centrino is a pentium m with a intel chipset and a intel wireless card?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2WTG, Jobs!
Shoulndn't have been such a pain in the ass to IBM these past five years...
And now that IBM dumped Apple, they are stuck with Viiv when they could be shipping Cell based systems.
Idiots reaping what they sowed.
