- IHatePants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75The two sweetest words in the English language: price war.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -9/+50It's true.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30This is slightly unrelated, but on this page (at least when I viewed it) there was an ad for Blu-Ray.
Their slogan? "Are you ready to experience BLU?"
Witness - a failure in the making, boys. - Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15It's called business. Intel is taking an aggressive but very appropriate stance against AMD as far as business is concerned. Can't deny it's a smart move on their part.
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I'm BLU abba dee abba dyi abba deee abba dyi. . . . . .
- chickenselects, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I actually just got a 6600 early ;) time to OC this beast to 4ghz on water
- omnivector, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12No, the chips on the macbook and macbook pros is sodered onto the board.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Price wars are good for consumers in the short term, but if they drag on too long, they can stifle innovation as everyone aims to cut costs to zero while devoting all their normal R&D resources to obtaining lower costs. In short, while a price war is definitely welcome after quite a while of seeing most of the CPUs I've dreamed about go for >$500, I really hope this doesn't turn into a long term war of attrition...
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9you could be waiting forever if you do that, though.. Quad-core Intels are due in early 2007..
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I am not saying that capitalism doesn't rock, but merely wish to avoid the great backfire that occurred when Dell lead the industry into a hopeless price war. Now computer hardware is of much lower quality than it was back in the old days, especially high end components which now are nothing more than the next generation of standard components. The CPU industry and enthusiast motherboard and GPU industries are two of the only remaining components of the industry that still provide some outlet for major technology innovation, and I'd hate to see this last ghost of the "days of good hardware" disappear into the abyss. Capitalism is great, because it gives consumers what they want. But you know they say, be careful what you wish for.
- harshbarj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yep last week an Athlon x2 5000+ cost ~$700 and this week they are $320 at some online stores. Looks like my old 3500+ will be seeing an upgrade.
- noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9this is why i always wait before buying....i could have jumped at a notebook with intel core duo. but no! now i can get one with a digit in the name (which will be much better and not too much more expensive i hope)
- venir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm not saying that it isn't true, but is it that surprising that a company comes out with a new product and declares it to be the "best in the world" ?
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6But just think - if you wait even longer, you can have one with a HIGHER digit in it. Unless you know that there's something new right around the corner, you simply can't win by waiting for stuff like this. Yeah, I'd never buy any Apple product that's more than a couple of months old anywhere near the WWDC, but in general, you can't sit around waiting for the next big thing. If you do, you'll be waiting forever.
- innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6damn now i'll be selling my P4 for like 20 bucks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I reccomend Overclocking an X2 3800+ rather than the higher priced offerings.
- ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Intel may be ahead now, but you can't deny that AMD pushed them to innovate.
- iUser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Anybody think there might be a chance of this price war bringing down prices of Macbooks? Would really help my decision of whether or not to switch!
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The Mac Pro is gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No.
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4because It's true
- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just got my newest edition of Maximum PC in the mail yesterday. I guess according to them the Core 2 Duo Extreme (2.93 Mhz or so) will blow the FX-62 away. They even put it in their new Dream Machine 11.
Since both companies are dropping prices by big margins I might pick up an FX-60. That will let me keep my ram and motherboard. FX-60 with 2GB DDR 1 ram will be good enough for now. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Do you think the prices of the Intel Pentium D's will go back up after the price war?
No they will not. They will be phased out entirely. Wait until they're almost gone. A Pentium D for $100 or less is still a great deal; AMD will drop prices to match too. Wait until the holiday shopping season at least, right not is NOT a good time to buy, the price war is just getting started. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why wouldn't they?
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love my AMD64 and have used AMD for a while now but seriously we need these two companies leaping each other to promote better and better processors for cheaper prices. Best for everyone!
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No.
You could build a cluster though. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3doesn't it seem weird that they're only cutting SOME, in fact, a VERY select few, prices? it's like someone at intel said, "oh, those 541s were ***** up. cut their price; and cut the prices of those other cpus which were ***** up as well." it's like there was a FREAK accident at the intel plant, somewhere, and a lot of cpus of certain models got... well, y'know.
anyway, i could just see that happening. :P - innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7don't worry, there are enough intel haters out there to keep AMD in the game for a long time
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sure. You'll just have to fab your own motherboard and BIOS. ;P
- AnimalMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they usually upgrade the hardware of the model instead of lowering its price.
- TechGeeknet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man that brings me back to when I used to have a 200mhz CYRIX running WIn95 and thought it was badass a whole 64MB up from 32MB. Now my cell phone has more ram and a compareable processor speed. The days.
- rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22 company's, 1 war
consumers the winners... i love it! - doolittle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would prefer an X2 over a Pentium D any day...
Isn't that why they produced Conroe in the first place? - Butros, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Probably not much, most of apple's cost is in their design, not the actual components of the system (otherwise their prices would be more in line with Dell or HP's). I'm not saying the extra cost for the design isn't worth it mind you.
- DopeWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where did you get it?
- duruq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody knows when the new Macbook Pros might be coming up? I am thinking about getting one when the school starts so.. And some insight about the quad core macbook pro would also be appreciated
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2let me know how well that goes , what brand you going with for water and pumps, etc
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Yes.
E6800 / ASUS PW5-DH Extreme / 4x1GB Corsair XMS
That's my new setup.
I tested it against my AMD X2 screamer (X2 5000+) and it absolutely destroys it across the board. It runs cooler too.
Conroe is the *****...for now =) - JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No, but the Core quad core will be here soon. Next bus stop you can hop on. Sometime around this time next year.
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Is Cyrix even around anymore? Didn't via buy them?
- artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well what do YOU guys have on your computer. Was it by choice or it came with the comp.
- busyanuj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah the duel in pricing has just begun.
with the new Intel chips beating AMD in tests, Intel is bound to gain back lost ground. - noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3:::
- DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3What about Cyrix? ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2they look pretty sweet for a small database server. might be time to upgrade the p3 1.1ghz.
haha - nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2thats why i asked
- noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1well, i try to not buy anything ever untill a year or so after its announced. And with intel making all these imporvements and the maybe switch to nvidia from apple and WWDC maybe showing us windows integration, seems pretty resonable to wait..
- dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it's always good to see price-cuts :)
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Does anyone know if these price drops are coming to Australia?
- fendee1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3after how many years.....then two years later amd best in the universe....and the seesaw continues...
