There - I fixed it for both of you. - sgtcaboose, on 01/30/2008, -5/+17Way to go Intel! A good way to show the world you arent just about sticking it to AMD :)
Please, no fanboying like the above MrViklund :) - mpineiro, on 01/30/2008, -1/+12And this is why Capitalism is dangerous. Some things are more important than profit.
- RealmDown, on 01/30/2008, -10/+19Intel > AMD
I fixed that for you. - muniak, on 01/30/2008, -1/+10It supports the renewable energy market and shows that not only huge dope smoking hippies are interested in the environment.
- potisreallygood, on 01/30/2008, -0/+9I have an idea, take an employee/spokesperson/fanboy from each of the following companies and have them fight in a one night tournament. Thus, settling all future fanboy debates until next tuesday. The bracket would look something like this.
AMD vs Intel
ATI vs Nvidia
vs
Mac vs PC
PS3 vs 360
Fedor vs Couture as the main event and HDDVD vs BluRay on the under card. - GaminAndy, on 01/30/2008, -11/+17Intel is being more wasteful by bottle-necking technology. I know they have the technology to fabricate chips that are way smaller than 45nm, they are just not deploying them as a market scheme so we have to buy new desktops every couple of years. But if they do so, they will lose business over the years because there comes a point where they cannot shrink the size of semi-conductors anymore.
- utdrew182, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5Technology to produce and technology to produce efficently are two diffrent things. If they could just run out a chip that much better and crush any competition they would.
- timbo458, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5I believe Intel's "voltage stepping" technology has made it into millions of computers.
- inactive, on 01/30/2008, -2/+7its all a grid anyway so you can't say that i got this electron from this power company instead of that power company.
what it does do is give money to green power companies so they can improve and expand.
unless you put solar panels on your roof or a wind turbine on your property or build your own power plant you can't demand that your power from one power plant instead of another. - thugok, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5Exactly, they apply what they learn from each successive die shrink and use that in the next generation. Otherwise the cost of development would crush any chance at profit for a long time. And if it were that easy, don't you think AMD would skip the 65nm and 45nm processes all together and jump to 32nm or smaller.
- danieldantastic, on 01/30/2008, -3/+8Now I can get that eight-core mac pro I've been needing. For the planet, of course.
- iloveliberals, on 01/30/2008, -5/+9As a consumer guided by press releases, I'm impressed and moved by this politically correct manuever. As a stockholder leery of touchy-feely expenditures, not so much.
- archer75, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4That's what they did with the C2D processors. And the new Penryn.
- diggpandit, on 01/30/2008, -1/+5really great step! Thank you Intel!.... now others should follow same step.
- Mithrander, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4Intel > AMD
It's true. Intel's stuff these days generally outperform AMD - inactive, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3they are already working on carbon nanotube transistors which will greatly shrink the size of computers. the point to where they can't get any smaller is a long way off. and even when that does happen i'm sure they're will be plenty of innovation left in improving the way they work and process information.
- archer75, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3I work in the semiconductor industry and can tell you these dangerous, toxic chemicals are disposed of properly. The state of Oregon ensures it. The water that leaves my plant is cleaner than when it came in.
- inactive, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3I'd very much like to see your source for this.
- muniak, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4I'm sure we'll find ways to make them smaller ALWAYS.
- AionGlobalcom, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3How sweet of them...
- AndrewDB, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3You think they'll call the core's they're releasing for the planet Materia?
- YuriSakazaki, on 01/30/2008, -7/+9Technically they're just feeding into this carbon credit *****. Giving someone who runs a "green" power plant money doesn't mean you're getting power from them at all, it's just an "I feel good" gesture. Call me when they install a solar or wind farm and provide their own power that way.
- jizzlies, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2Good for them...and good for us!
- bossm4n, on 01/30/2008, -3/+5By saying they are the largest purchaser of green energy, ultimately they are the largest consumer of green energy. I would be more impressed if they were reducing their consumption by a significant amount instead of merely buying from alternative providers. That being said, they can probably do more to reduce overall energy consumption by continuing to make their products more energy efficient, which I know they are but quit holding out on us.
- onwardknave, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2This doesn't show capitalism is working. It reduces public sentiment to a "market force." That's not the kind of world I want. With most corporations unwilling to make ethical choices, just so they can make the most profit, people unrelated to the corporation are affected. The environment suffers, carcinogens leech into the environment... Iraqi citizens died as a result of Blackwater's profit motive. I am not willing to compromise people, their health, or the health of the environment for the sake of profit. Whether the people behind it are rich already, or still poor -- ethics MUST take precedence for the good of us all. Capitalism offers a free market -- not an ethical one.
- strictnein, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2You realize that R&D is expensive, right? If they just made the most cutting edge products they could, and nothing else, prices would sky rocket.
- YuriSakazaki, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2My point exactly. You can't say you're "buying green power" because you're not. I doubt it's so they can improve and expand so much as so they can line their pockets, this whole "carbon credit" and "buying green power" stuff is the shadiest thing I've seen in a while. But it looks good in a press release, so what can you do.
- iloveliberals, on 01/30/2008, -2/+4Suuuure it's dangerous, just like free thought and speech. Free market capitalism means you can vote with your dollars and your feet. Freedom. Choices. It's not dangerous; it's a way of life, as opposed to central planning, with everyone marching to the same politically correct tune.
- directrix13, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3You just fanboyed and then said no fanboying.
- jasondragon, on 01/30/2008, -5/+6How does purchasing certificates (paper?) help renewable energy?
- sandeeptec, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1is it 100% true and not from marketing point of view
- danarama, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Capatialism thrives off cheap labour and slaves, always has always will. Rich get richer the poor work for them. And a free market system dominated and controled by huge corporations is not exactly free.
- amoro99, on 01/30/2008, -3/+4I never knew there were so many ways to be a naysayer. Thanks digg for showing me that there is no good news, only an opportunity to be a whiny bitch.
P.S. Way to go Intel - kaelyiesta, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1The multi core processors they've been making do just that agzman.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 01/30/2008, -2/+345nm FTW!
- danarama, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1the other thing is that capatialism presumes the natural world is a resouce for consumtion and monotization without any fall back plan. Illogical and unsustainable.
- CoolGoose, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Go Go Gadget! FTW!
- MCCULLAH, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1HUZZAH INTEL POWAH !
- fixedcoma, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1it's good to see a large corporation standing up and making a good impression for a greener planet!
- danarama, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1All they did was invest in a power company.
- NJank, on 01/30/2008, -3/+4On the contrary, this shows capitalism actually working. The idea behind capitalism is that market forces pull companies in the direction of most benefit for the consumer at lowest cost. This will only happen in truth, however, when the total cost is factored into the market. Public sentiment and consumer preference are as much a market force as component costs, when the market chooses to give them enough importance. Typically, at least in the past, green issues were seen as separate or even counter to market forces. BUT, for a company's long term bottom line, catering to consumer preference and sentiment can quite definitely be a factor. When the market starts to demand something of it's players, that somehow factors into the true cost of the product. Stockholders may not like it for the same reason they wouldn't like an increase in the cost of silicon wafers. But, if it is a business decision made with the prospect of long term catering to market forces, it should be for the company (in the end) a Good Thing (TM)
- Tuto, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Beijing...... For the love of god people china is not a socialist country! The reason why there is so much pollution in Beijing is because companies are allowed to run free with out any kind of limitations. In other words China is only in the beginning of industrialization, pollution is to be expected in that stage.
- ShepherdBook, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1So if running a green power plant is so lucrative for energy barons, why wouldn't they expand and get more credits to flog on the market?
- katanauser, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0Looks like it's time to buy AMD products exclusively then!
- strictnein, on 01/30/2008, -1/+1But at least we have nick111 to show us the way!
Get off your high horse. You're no smarter or informed than the rest of us. - Tuto, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0They produce pollution because companies along with the Chinese government doesn't give a ***** about pollution. The reason why china:s economy is growing insanely fast is basically because the government offers companies the right to do pretty much anything they want from polluting to exploiting workers. The only thing that matters to them is to tie the companies to china by offering these things and thus driving the economic growth.
- neocognitism, on 01/30/2008, -1/+1Great news! Now if they would just sell their Israeli division, I would respect them even more!
- HareBall, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0Why should pollution be expected at this or any other stage in China? They have access to the latest technology.
When they decided to get phone service to the most remote parts of the country, they didn't start with wires and work their way up like America had to do it. They started at cellular.
They only produce the pollution they do because they don't care about the environment. - prathe, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0It's the direction that matters.
It is important that capitalism should not always hide the thruth about the environment to survive. We need big player to slowly change those environment-careless habits. Bravo!. -
