- lucas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AFAIK, the reason the SC101 requires a driver ("Windows-only client software") is because it's not a NAS - it's a SAN. It provides block-level access to the drive. In theory, there should be less overhead than SMB/NFS over TCP/IP. In practice, I have yet to see any benchmarks.
The actual technology comes from Zetera ( http://zetera.com/ )
I, too, find it odd that there's no Linux or OSX support, but I find the lack of proper cooling and Gig-E a bigger deterrent than the lack of alternative OS support.
My home network has two Windows PCs and I cannot justify the cooling/power requirements of running a server, which is why a toaster appeals to me. - Tsf42m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://store.yahoo.com/fire-wire-1394-ilink/ic800ra0dudr.html
Nice 2 firewire 800 (daisy chain)
No network :( - nickp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But you must have some good news source, OHMichael. You've been a digg member for about a month and you're already one of the top submitters.
Good work. - nickp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry I lashed out at you OHMichael. I'm not jealous. I've been sick and delirious and in a bad mood all day long. I hate mondays, don't you?
This is a actually good story and I sent it to one of my college buddies who does a lot of video capping. Digg+ - emag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks, but RAID0?! No thanks, my data's too important for that. I'll stick with my software RAID5 solutions, even if they're more expensive.
That being said, RAID0 has its uses, but mid-to-long term storage definitely isn't it. Even RAID1 would be better for that, as you don't lose anything when (not if) a drive fails. - scribebox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, i followed the same steps, Windows 2000 Server sp4 + updates / RAID0 two 200gig SAMSUNGS 80bucks a piece, the raid card was like 20 bucks, setup TightVNC on it so i could administer it remotely, setup some SAMBA shares :), connected a whole bunch of xboxes to the wireless/wired network, ^^, enjoy streaming media off my 400 gigs ^^
same method applies for 800 gigs, and the computer is only like 433mhz i had lying in my closet, with 128mb's of ram :).. worked out fairly nicely when hooked up to my WRT54G & 5 xboxes running XBMC
-scribe - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0D-Link sells something like this...a network harddrive...but i agree its way too overpriced
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Take an old computer, put NASLite on (liked by Patick Norton, so I'll use it), but some bigass harddrives in, and presto; cheap backups.
- 1337geek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ya, we can all make file servers, but for simplicity, i say this is pretty sweet.
im a laptop lanner, so packing this baby with me will be much easier than a file server. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cheap PC (You could get one for nothing, take an old PC of someones hand) + http://www.serverelements.com/ (Free) + 4 of http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=89532 (£265.04GBP or $465.294USD)
Cheaper, more capacity, scalable as feck (And if you get cheaper drives, it'll cost less)
I just need to get the money for the harddrives :(
- Ben - stubby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reviews of the product mentioned aren't so good looking.
- jenocin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not sure why you would want to run naslite when freenas is free and works better :-P Samba/NFS/FTP all with a nice web interface from the m0n0wall router project.
http://www.freenas.org/ - scan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another option :
http://reviews.cnet.com/Buffalo_TeraStation_NAS_1TB/4505-3382_7-31299300.html
More expensive but includes raid and gigabit network connection. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ that guy's got it right. did pretty much the same thing here, twice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, they sell 400 GB drives for around 150 (If you know where to look)
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0800gb is no where close to a terabyte. False Advertising!
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Network hard drives are slow compared to plugging in a Firewire or USB2.0 device (which you can carry around in your shirt pocket), and some less auspicious brands suffer some hellishly awkward protocol problems - I had a friend who had one that only one user at a time could log into from a Mac (but any number from Windows). I don't suppose better known brands like NetGear or D-Link suffer such issues but I still think it's overrated and overpriced.
- Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In keeping with what CompIsMyRx said about p.norton:

* Jim Louderback shows us how to roll your own NAS (that's Network Attached Storage) box. - rocketrye12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0first! 70 dollar ebay cheap PII, windows xp home, 5 RAID 200 gig newegg drives....500 bucks tops, plus a computer!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just buy 2 x 400GB drives and put them in a pc on your network then share the storage space... wouldn't that be cheaper than this ridiculous idea?
- bebopredux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just bought 2 Seagate 250GB OEM drives at Newegg for $110 apiece. One inside my G5 and another in a Firewire enclosure external box. 500GB for about $260 including the enclosure.
- RabidPuppet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0agree with everyone on advantages of firewire over a network drive. found two interesting dual drive enclosures: $109.95 (firewire 400) and $135 (firewire 800). http://www.usbgear.com/Dual_bay_firewire_case_enclosure/
- Koushiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the heck are you people doing where you need a Terra-byte of storage?!
With all the movies, games and music I have on my PC I still have over 30 gigs out of 80 on my one single hard drive. x.x; - xaph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh yes. Let's all begin our massive pirating schemes.
- jon7035, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did this already with 2 Lacie 500Gb external hds and a dlink network storage adapter. http://www.toshirosworld.com/?p=7
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0800GB is pretty far from a TB.
- triplegmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0do you guys know that the 400gig seagate drives are made by maxtor.....maxtor is teh ghey.
if youre doing any sort of video editing or video capture, youll know how easy a terabyte is to fill up. :) - marmoset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was looking into the SC101, but beware-- if you use Linux or OSX, it's useless to you: unlike most of the other NAS boxes out there, it requires proprietary Windows-only client software on every computer that wants to access the attached storage.
- n4cr2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been looking for a good NAS solution for some time now. Although incredibly easy, hooking up an old PC just to share files is ridiculous. I want a small low power consumption device that is scalable. I'm considering building my own from an mini-ITX motherboard and case and buying a 5 bay backplane. Similar to what this guy did
