- TwoFootAfro, on 06/28/2009, -1/+46Anyone else read that as the British Pornographic Industry?
- wettestwillie, on 06/28/2009, -0/+40Oh Napster. Memories of downloading albums by individual songs, each taking 5 minutes or more to download, only to burn a CD that took 30 minutes to burn a 10 song album. God forbid you were even in the same room while that CD was burning or it would fail.
- jboitnott, on 06/27/2009, -0/+31Better late than never? Sometimes it's important for people to just make the wrong decisions. That way they are weeded out and don't get to be involved as much in the future.
- ISellSigals, on 06/27/2009, -6/+32free information sharing should be embraced
- wintersland, on 06/28/2009, -1/+23"There’s also the comment that suggests that he still believes that one download means one lost sale; though he didn’t say that specifically"
I *really* wish they would get over the idea that one download is equal to one loss of sale. - PanicAK, on 06/28/2009, -1/+14Hindsight is 20/20
- brickbat, on 06/28/2009, -0/+13Don't forget an hour of normalization before burning.
- puppyoneb, on 06/28/2009, -0/+11Update: RIAA says "Our bad!" regarding file sharing lawsuits.
Well... in about 15 years. - LokitheComplex, on 06/28/2009, -4/+14Can I have your bank details?
- sublimemm, on 06/28/2009, -1/+11What moron is going to pay for a product when he can get the exact same product for free somewhere else?
Ever heard of bottled water? - LokitheComplex, on 06/28/2009, -1/+11Actually I'm sure everyone who'd been online for years or had a sub with Wired or read cyberpunk or studied the relevant industries could have told them at the time they were facing an industry change.
They were dinosaurs when the asteroid hit. - MMoneta, on 06/28/2009, -3/+11One download equals one lost sale, just as one radio play equals millions of lost sales.
- Daerion, on 06/28/2009, -1/+9You got to learn to use "/s", people around here wouldn't know sarcasm if it shat in their face.
- kelly86, on 06/28/2009, -1/+8Haha, yes.
- seibed, on 06/28/2009, -2/+8ummm... and how exactly does the success of itunes work into your ***** denseness?
- gothicform, on 06/28/2009, -0/+6He still doesn't get it though because he then goes on to say the current sites and services like Napster are "populated by pirates" and refuses to do deals with them. Stupid man.
His logic is -
Site populated by pirates 10 years ago that we didn't do a deal with we regret.
Sites populated by pirates today we refuse to do deals with.
I believe the definition of an insane person is someone who despite failing dismally continues to do the same thing over and over and over and over again. A bit like the BPI and Geoff Taylor then(!) - JuanDCope, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5Wait, so they finally looked at their balance sheets and saw the global height of music sales was at the same time the height of Napster use? I haven't purchased music from anyone but an indie label since, and I don't plan on it ever again. To hell with them.
- PlusTheBear, on 06/28/2009, -1/+5*losing
- daboy, on 06/28/2009, -3/+7Yeah, just like there's no line between freely distributed information and a product being sold to support its creator's livelihood. oh, wait...
- Daerion, on 06/28/2009, -1/+5Well, call me a moron then - but I've paid for products I previously downloaded for free (aka pirated) plenty of times - as long as I liked them (an exception to this would be anything that'd give the RIAA/MPAA money).
edit: And solely due to downloading massive amounts of music in the napster and audiogalaxy days I've been to countless concerts of bands that I'd otherwise never have known. - Krakerjax, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4I didn't realize it wasn't the British Pornographic Industry until I read this post :(
- gullyben, on 06/28/2009, -2/+6You're an idiot. Music is not free information, someone spent a lot of money to make that music for you, whether it was the artist or a big greedy label. Are you still going to steal music from artists when the labels finally die and most of the artists are funding their own recordings? I don't understand this self-righteous attitude like you're entitled to everyone else's hard work for free just because it's 1's and 0's.
Maybe it's just because I work in a recording studio and I see how artists are suffering trying to make it work these days (most artists aren't rich celebs) . I mean I know this is a transition period to a new kind of music industry but stop being so self important that you think you deserve everything for free you ***** baby. - inactive, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3@Daerion
Who said it was sensitive, it is just a bunch of 0s and 1s like music, you are applying an abstract concept much like copyright! - Daerion, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3But exactly how many dollars ARE being lost due to piracy? And how many more dollars could be made by embracing new technology and distributing media accordingly instead of fighting a neverending battle against one's own potential customers?
- zyklon, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4It should be, but the greedy ***** will always want their money.
- alexforcefive, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3Just fyi, music does NOT cost a lot to produce. The hardware is cheap as ***** (no you do not need that allen & heath desk), the software is FREE (as in open-source, or as in bundled-with-hardware). When you factor in the idea that most musicians would still make music if it wasn't their careers (i.e. unsigned, bedroom musicians etc), then the cost of producing music effectively drops to zero. The cost of distributing it is likewise free, you just stick it on myspace or whatever, job done.
If you're in this business to make money, you're in the wrong business for several reasons. - inactive, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3Haha, I remember cracking that "Foolproof" software or whatever it was called on the school computers, installing napster on all the PCs in my class.
- Daerion, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3Guilty.
- alexforcefive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3I don't want to turn this into a pissing contest, but I am a musician, and I know other musicians. So I do know the "time, money and skills required to create professional quality original music". It is miniscule, as I said above.
I agree that I'm not entitled to your "work", and I'm not advocating piracy. I was just disagreeing with gullyben's assertion that "someone spent a lot of money to make that music for you". Like I said, the material costs are tiny, and more importantly are FIXED since if you weren't writing songs professionally, you'd be doing it anyway for the love of music. Right? - Matri, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Except they made a wrong decision and stuck with it for 10 years. They never got weeded out, they got promoted.
- Murrabbit, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3Slow progress. . . but hopefully steady.
- Daerion, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Nice copy and paste there, lad.
- cmsjustin, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Same
- kaosethema, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Go tell it to Wetallica [sic]
- Moralogic, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1Shortly after saying "Our bad!", the RIAA announced it is going to repay all the money they took from people through all of the lawsuits, especially people who were underage at the time, and the people who never owned a computer to begin with.
- alexforcefive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1"you are a fool if you don't think ... Dr. Dre .. is going to put out LESSER music than a 20 year-old college kid with fruity loops."
Freudian slip? - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1alex, of course anyone can record music with a 1,000 dollar computer but you are a fool if you don't think a 100 grand recording studio with Dr. Dre at the helm is going to put out lesser music than a 20 year-old college kid with fruity loops.
Also if you are NOT in the business to make money, then stop whining about the RIAA and other artists who do want to make money. Good for you you are doing it for the art, but some people grew up wanting to be rock stars who have millions of adorning fans and sell out stadiums. It is the American dream. - alexforcefive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1eww.
- Daerion, on 06/28/2009, -2/+3Right, because there's no line between sensitive data and information or entertainment.
- zellfaze, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1We do learn from our mistakes though, at least we now have an ally in the industry.
- abbathdoom, on 06/28/2009, -1/+2I remember napster as being this thing where you could start playing the song as soon as was downloading and it took longer to play than to download, hence any song you could think of in the world could be played instantly. I guess you didnt have a "fat pipe" like I did.
- Myonosken, on 06/28/2009, -1/+1Unfortunately, unless you'd turn down millions, you're in no position to feel superior to them.
- unitedkronos, on 06/28/2009, -3/+3It took 10 years but at least we're starting to realise it, how long will it take for the RIAA to see the truth too?
- greenmartian, on 06/28/2009, -3/+3Hmm...about time!
- doctordbx, on 06/28/2009, -4/+3Damn Onion... not going to get me this time.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -2/+1Well Napster was hardly martyred, got bought out by several companies and i'm sure Shawn Fanning is a wealthy man.
- w1cked1, on 06/28/2009, -1/+0There was also a few fights to keep those restricted format, digital copies, as low as 99 cents. They're already priced higher than if you bought the actual CD and anyone buying them is a complete idiot.
