- TheZorch, on 04/25/2008, -8/+41I call ***** on this one. Microsoft loves to blame Piracy on poor sales but the truth is too hard for them to comprehend ... Windows Vista sucks and nobody is buying it. In their minds its impossible to imagine nobody wanting to buy their products because they are ... da da dum ... "MICROSOFT", so they explain a lack of sales away as Piracy instead of facing Reality.
Besides, if you look at the Recording and Movie Industries as an example Piracy actually helps Promote and Increases Sales rather than hurt them. Every unbiased non-RIAA/MPAA funded study has proven this time and time again. It all comes down to Greed and a "Control Freak Syndrome" which seems to have infected almost every major corporation in the US these days. It can't go on this way, eventually somethings gotta give and when it blows it gonna go up like Mt. St. Helens. When the dust and ashes clear the corporate landscape of the US will likely be very different unless we can find a way to stop it before things go that far. - Hangly, on 04/25/2008, -2/+32That wouldn't be people who bought a Vista system and then pirated XP would it?
- chris9902, on 04/25/2008, -1/+24If you read it Microsoft's profits are down from $4.93bn to $4.39bn but that includes the $1.42bn fine from the EU.
So without the fine Microsoft would've made money. - aznhomig, on 04/25/2008, -4/+26WGA is a hindrance, not a help.
- terrablebyte, on 04/25/2008, -12/+33Or maybe more people are switching to Linux and Mac?
- bigpook, on 04/25/2008, -5/+25I just read that profits are down 11% at MS. I don't recall the last time that happened, if ever. And now this, blaming piracy....I don't know, just sounds like they need to blame something...
- MadN, on 04/25/2008, -4/+24I am so sure that pirates caused Vista to be too bloated to run.
What hurts Vista is a lack of piracy; nobody wants it. - inactive, on 04/25/2008, -1/+14WGA is definitely malware and a security threat.
- PueSi, on 04/25/2008, -2/+13Why? They spend money on it they're entitled to profit from it.
- chris9902, on 04/25/2008, -2/+13Yeah ***** those developers. I mean code just grows on trees so why should you pay for it? It's not like they've invested billions or spend years of their life educating themselves. Who the ***** do they think they are wanting money for work. It's shocking!
- KiraDnote, on 04/25/2008, -0/+10MS's anti-piracy schemes are so unfriendly I prefer pirated WinXP corporate over the pro version I paid for.
- kenvsryu, on 04/25/2008, -2/+11Microsoft loves to blame other people.
- Rotzooi, on 04/25/2008, -3/+12*****. Apple just posted a huge increase in profits due to stellar sales of Macs. It's just the marketplace at work.
- nixfu, on 04/25/2008, -0/+8In my experience the MORE real-world IT experience you have the MORE you dislike Microsoft...trying to get their broken non-scalable stuff like sharepoint to work in the enterprise over the years is enough to drive anyone to hate them.
- Bamsebjorn, on 04/25/2008, -5/+13A lot of people have bought Ubuntu Linux lately. It costs only $0,00!
Maybe Microsoft should reconsider their pricing model. - betona, on 04/25/2008, -5/+12Dear Microsoft:
Windows XP and the older versions of MS Office work just fine for us, so we don't see any need to buy anything this year. Best wishes and let's do lunch sometime--mkay?
Signed,
Corporate America - czeman, on 04/25/2008, -2/+9Yep, typical corporate *****. Fool the shareholders by blaming poor performance on the easiest thing to blame, particularly one that you can't prove. I mean, after all, you just can't be honest tell your Board of Directors that your drop in performance was due to the release of a ***** product. The board probably fell for it too! They aren't typically in touch with reality. No, doing such a thing is too much to ask of Corporate America.
- idd7, on 04/25/2008, -4/+11It's not piracy, it's Vista!
- sdm011, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7Ya, it could be increased piracy. OR it could be the fact that Vista is terrible.
- inactive, on 04/25/2008, -3/+9Vista and vista alone caused me to look into an alternative last year. Ironically, Vista was the first and only OS I ever paid for. I thought I would do the right thing once. But after it wouldn't work on my computer (even in crippled mode), I sold it and bought a Mac. *nix wasn't even an option, for reasons I won't go into now.
Fast forward 6 months...I've just bought my 2nd mac (one for the road) and personally convinced 4 others to do the same. Our entire office is going Apple in the next hardware cycle.
This was DIRECTLY CAUSED by the crappy first version of vista. I don't care what they've bandaged with service packs and the constant stream of updates. It's too late. In 2 years, Apple will have sold 50 more macs solely because of vista. FACT. - DrLeePhD, on 04/25/2008, -1/+7they do, sort-of.
pirated copies can't use windows update EXCEPT for critical security updates. it would be stupid to deny anyone the security updates since it just makes their software look bad. - jdstorer2, on 04/25/2008, -0/+6"Increased WGA hurt Microsoft's quarter"
There, subby, fixed that for you. - pigfister, on 04/25/2008, -1/+6What a load of bull, its not piricy its because vista sucks and there are many open source alternatives to their bloated privacy destroying crapware!
A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection: "The Vista Content Protection specification could very well constitute the longest suicide note in history"
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_c ... - stalky14, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5...or people who bought a Vista system and then legitimately put their old computer's copy of XP on it.
- nixfu, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5They started the BSA.
- Giga, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5But you would seed Windows ME? Vista is nowhere near as bad as what ME was.
- binaryloop, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5*****! If it weren't for piracy Microsoft wouldn't be as popular as they are today. Set your "way back' machine and think about the year 1993. Or 1995. Or 1998. How many of you Diggers out there:
a) Asked to borrow a copy of Windows or Office from a friend or family member
b) Loaned a copy of Windows or Office to a friend or family member
c) Installed Windows or Office on a friend or family member's computer
Exactly. Maybe the truth is that Vista sucks and nobody likes it. Maybe the truth is that a lot of people are switching to Mac or Linux because they're sick of Microsoft's crap. This sound like the same thing the record companies are saying. "Sales are down so let's blame it on piracy". And, we all know how truthful the record companies have been. Microsoft makes crappy software. They should be so lucky to have someone pirate their crap. I bought a Mac a few years ago and I'll never run Microsoft software ever again. - KiraDnote, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5probably more than 50
- redxxx, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5uhh... are you sure you are not confusing anti-Apple with pro-Microsoft?
- Sendai129, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4I liked ME... it had a cool bootup picture. And with all those bright colours I was just sure it was ready for Y2K as well! That's why Vista is so great, it's all in the presentation with its sleek desktop and its transparent OK I CAN'T DO IT ANYMORE I'M DONE!
- inactive, on 04/25/2008, -3/+7arrr matey
- oldgal, on 04/25/2008, -2/+6Why would anyone pirate MS software. It's like stealing garbage instead of candy.
- inactive, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5XP Home (all of Pro minus networking bits and some other tools otherwise complete)
$180 (AU) OEM
XP Pro $280 (AU) OEM
Could get OEM from PC shop at anytime. Boxed sets were 160% - 240% more.
Vista Ultimate (Like XP home) $500 Boxed
Cannot get OEM unless buying a PC. OEM ($280)
So the reasoning that its getting pirated is........And Microsoft have not a clue? - fuckingusername, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4sure Ubuntu and the OSX didn't hurt sales , oh over paid college boy ?
- CarzorStelatis, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4I think he's meaning that his business will replace its ageing WIndows 2000 machines with Macs instead of Vista desktops
- ickybod, on 04/25/2008, -3/+6Are you sure it wasn't "Bad Products And Bad Customer Support Hurt Microsoft's Quarter"?
- inactive, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3i hope it is!
- brian1027, on 04/25/2008, -2/+5Biggest load of horse ***** I've heard this year. the pirates dont want vista neither do I. I got a new OS this year, just yesterday in fact. Maybe you've heard of it, its called Ubuntu!
- lightningrod220, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3"Oh *****! Sales are down, sir! What do we do?"
"Eh, just blame it on piracy" - bamafun, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3"yeah buzzdiggity told me the same thing about breeder's mom"
- Myztry, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3"Feels kind of exclusive. Like they made it for me!"
Do you work for a marketing firm or something. That sounds like the kind of over sweetened rubbish you only see in advertising... - CarzorStelatis, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3'without the fine Microsoft would have made money'
Er... RTFA, Microsoft made $4.39bn - Bicep, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3What? Piracy brings the Gorilla less profit? What? So does this mean people are PIRATING VISTA? LOL, now that's pretty funny. Perhaps the article should have read "Polished Turd gets ripped"!!
Oh and is Microsoft running for public office or something? What kind of spin is that.... The real story is that Microsoft's rape-all-standards and reap-all-profit monopoly-driven machine is depleting in both popularity as well as usability. Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu Linux) is known for the moniker "There be dragons"... NOW THE DRAGONS ARE EATING Microsoft. GO FREEDOM. GO LINUX!! - Bicep, on 04/25/2008, -2/+5Get Ubuntu here:

Ubuntu now has the option to install inside a folder in Windows, which will then give the option to reboot into Ubuntu (via the boot.ini). Ubuntu also shows up as a program in add/remove programs. Awesome way to surf the Internet safely. I recommend you have all your "unsafe" web surfers use this method. The newest release will automatically detect and install the plugins you need for most web content. Yay LINUX!!!
Also checkout distrowatch.com and livecdlist.com for more information about different Linux versions - KiraDnote, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3One problem with our culture is that we value profits more than contributions to society. MS could be such a force for good in the world, but we prefer that corporations just make as much money as possible.
- Myztry, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Microsoft Small Business Server.... GRRRRRR !!!!!
- liuite, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2end of XP sales will mean more piracy of XP!
- mliving, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2*****!
Another useless attempt by Steve and the boys to hide the galactic failure called Vista.
If there is any piracy happening its with XP. But because MS refuses to sell it to consumers is downloading a copy of it really piracy? - sublimemm, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2wow, lay of the drugs Napalmahze
