    They said it would begin the next era of civilization. This era was more advance than the last, and the next era will be signifigantly more advanced than now. So much so that anyone around during the next era will look back on this one and laugh at how barbaric we were/are. Lets hope they're correct.

    The "world will end" part of the Mayan calandar is just a common American misconception, like how most Americans think Columbus discovered America or that "celibacy" means "no sex" or that "God wrote the Bible".
